Ever since I discovered your channel I have been watching your APUSH videos, and they have made my class so much less stressful and more enjoyable. Your videos are engaging and I really like watching them. Thank you so much for doing what you do! I can’t even express how grateful I am

Three of my grandparents were sharecroppers. In fact, I guess you could even say that my father was a sharecropper, since as a boy he picked cotton with my grandparents when they were still sharecropping. "Working on the halves" is what my grandfather called it. He never complained about it, but he did say things were better after he bought his own farm around 1950.

Quite interesting. Already finished APUSH with a 5, but it's always good exercise to challenge one's mind, casting modern biases aside and delving deep into a complex historical situation
@dreambig79652 жыл бұрын
Hello, how did you get a 5? Do you remember the LEQ and DBQ topic?
@generalgrievous37312 жыл бұрын
@@dreambig7965 I took the 2021 exam. It's been posted. I remember the DBQ was about economic growth in the 20th century and for the LEQ I choose the one about imperialism. I got a 5 by studying review books and reading through every chapter in the textbook. Also, I took AP Euro and got a 5 on that last year, so I already know the writing skills and the rubrics, which definitely helped.

The damaging effects of slavery are still felt today in this country
@Joachim_Meyer2 жыл бұрын
I love your videos Heimler, but I wanted to ask you about this. You consistently say that slavery was abolished by the 13th amendment, but I find that a bit misleading considering that slavery was very much still allowed "as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." This led to the over-imprisonment and policing of blacks after Reconstruction failed in companionship with Jim Crow Laws. Please correct me if any of this is wrong, but I thought it was a good point to bring up and I am curious about your position on this.
@heimlershistory2 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right on that. Slavery as a legal system of labor was abolished by the 13th Amendment, but that punishment clause has been responsible for continued marginalization…
@Joachim_Meyer2 жыл бұрын
@@heimlershistory Alright, I just wanted to check and make sure I wasn't spreading any misinformation. Also want to thank you for serving me well during my sophomore and junior years in APUSH and AP Euro and now in AP Gov. Although Gov has been a lot easier than the past two classes, I've remained subscribed to your channel because of the lasting impact you had on me and I will remain subscribed for the quality historical videos even if I don't "need" them anymore.

@@bychen5011 I think he’s talking about shortly after the 13th amendment, not present day
@radcat85502 жыл бұрын
@@bychen5011 I think the high rate of imprisonment is caused by a mix of both excessive incarceration and making bad decisions, but it is important to consider that high crime rates are linked to the underserving of communities. I recommend the novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynold’s; it puts a face on this issue

Involuntary servitude is not the same as slavery. Although both terms have been sometime used synonymously, the main difference is that slavery is fundamentally about ownership of the person.

Your video is wrong from the start, if you read the 13th Amendment closely - slavery wasn't abolished, just reformed.
