Agree. BJP was able to pull off Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and to some limit Rajasthan all because of their groundwork. Listen to Yashwant Deshmukh how BJP was able to win MP with big numbers all because BJP's Cadre was able to pull out its voters from the homes to booths. Social media does create hype but ultimately the groundwork system helps that hype to translate in votes.
