My wife has traced her family's lineage to slaves owned by Drax. Hundreds of millions to billions? In general, the only way such fortunes can be amassed is through exploitation. Because if you are someone who is in a position to make make that much money and you refuse to do it through exploitative means, you will be outcompeted by people who don't have those scrupules and you won't get to that level. You might find one or two exceptions to this (though I suspect if you dig deep enough, you'll still find exploitation) but the vast majority of people who are that wealthy, you'll find exploitation at the source of their wealth. But yes, in general I do agree that if people worked hard for their money and (most importantly) didn't gather it by exploiting others or through other nefarious shenanigans, they should be able to spend it as they see fit. I see no issue with that and as such am a proponent of equity but not equality

The 'Forgotten Towns' report is spot-on. Weymouth and Portland was abandoned by the MoD and the Royal Navy in the mid-90s and utterly devastated the local economy. Nothing much has been done about it ever since. It was akin to a major coal mine or steelworks closing down. One thing that could be done to arrest the decline is for a maritime-based university to be set-up and to get the area moving forward once more. At the moment the brightest and best just leave the area, once they are old enough.

No Drax ever imported a slave into the UK. In fact after 1100 no Englishmen did. The keeping of slaves has been illegal in the UK for over 900 years. However, it was perfectly fine in West Africa and still is, as the modern day slave markets in Libya and Algeria attest. They didn’t see each other as the same. The British war on slavery is an incredibly noble act. Though it took a lot for the country a long time to get to this position. Spurred on by the French Revolution, the enlightenment period, abolitionists, slave revolts, and political turmoil and voting rights(reform act, Peterloo massacre etc), Britain realised to stand in good standing on the international stage it had to make a choice to end the unjust manner of slavery if it wanted to be an arbiter of the ideals of of justice, liberty and freedom that were becoming popular. Slavery was an hypocritical torn in the side to these morals, that and the agrarian slave based economy wasn’t as profitable in the long term as Britain had once hoped, the majority of the wealth in the slave trade went to the upper class and aristocracy who kept their money in tight circles, industrialisation and technology would make a more future proofed economy as the working class would have jobs mining coal, producing textiles, and ironworking , the middle class would provide these jobs and pump a lot of those earnings back into the nation’s economy on things they’d purchase. This is also the same century that Britain would embark on its mass colonisation of Africa in search of more resources to fund its new economic aspirations. So I guess those good noble deeds don’t last long.

Where are all the other slaving and colonising countries in this treatise? Most European countries (and from other continents) had colonies and slaves, not just Britain as everyone seems to imply. The majority of the British made nothing out of slavery, it was just a few wealthy people. The industrial revolution was the largest force in raising the wealth of the country and the white population of Britain were the "slave equivalents" in pushing that revolution forward.
