The end of day one and day two of Matt Hancock's evidence to the Covid Inquiry lifted the lid on how destructive some in government believed Rishi Sunak's Eat Out To Help Out scheme was during the pandemic, and how much influence the current Prime Minister had over Boris Johnson in delaying lockdowns.

"My primary concern was saving lives"... said the man, just ten minutes after he admitted that he knew the government program was killing people but chose to keep quiet because his primary concern at that time was COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY. If he doesn't face a judge for this, the whole state is corrupt.

You may be right @@andyetheridge. However, and somebody please put me right if I'm wrong, In these proceedings, he is giving evidence as a witness, as opposed to being interviewed, ie questioned formally about his suspected involvement in an offence. In the case of the latter, he would need to be cautioned, ie told that he needn't say anything, and that what he says may be given in evidence, in addition, he would be entitled to legal representation, otherwise, nothing of what he said would be admissable. Again, please, let me know if I have this wrong.

That applies to all politicians, there are very few or no people in parliament who would be scientific experts in anything. They are there to be the union between the public and the scientific advisory committees, as well as budget decisions. I’m not saying the system is wise, but it is what it is as expertise is not a prerequisite by any means.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone twist and squirm like Hancock in this inquiry. I think he knows he is in trouble and is genuinely scared of being prosecuted at some point in the future. And quite rightly so. He, and a few others, DEFINITELY should be prosecuted.
@BK10011
@BK10011 Жыл бұрын
Question is… can they be prosecuted? And if so, what for? I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that due to their roles within govt during periods such as these, they are exempt …..e.g if you are Health Secretary being asked to deal with a virus the world has never seen, how exactly are you held accountable for decisions made when not even the scientists were 100% certain? I think if there was one thing we can be certain of is regardless of the crisis at hand, there is no possible excuse for financially benefiting as most appear to have done. This for me is abundantly clear and the mis appropriation of tax payers money evident.

They don't understand the maths of it. Keeping R at 0.95 is pretty much keeping the problem still there during the summer months so it will enter the winter at a high number of cases. You would be much better with R at 0.5 where you would get a strong exponential decrease in rates so you have a lot of scope when it rises again because it will rise from a low figure. The keeping R below one was an oversimplification of the problem. I see this so much with politicians. They reduce a complicated problem into a conception that a 5-year-old would comprehend. We are run by mathematical imbeciles.

Whilst Hancock was not as irresponsible as either Johnson or Sunak, nonetheless he must bear much of the responsibility for the huge number of excess deaths which this nation suffered - far more than most other European nations. But behind all this lies the years of cut-backs to the NHS, leaving it already in a VERY vulnerable state. And these cut-backs were unnecessary, rather they were done deliberately in order to undermine the NHS which the Tories want to see replaced with a 2-tier health system, whereby proper health care only becomes possible for those able to afford expensive medical insurance, as seen not in Europe but in the USA. In short, covert Tory policy has been to bring the NHS to its' knees as a matter of political dogma. And that dogma is the Neoliberal ideal of shrinking the size of the state and having EVERYTHING owned privately, or by corporations which exist to maximize profits for their shareholders. The entire concept of a Health Care system free at the point of need has always been detestable to the TOry mindset.

How uk covid numbers were far higher than other European countries because we counted the infections totally differenty from other countries. If the other countries counted the same as us the numbers would be similar. The NHS CANNOT be financed as it was in 1948/49 Free at the point of access is no longer economically viable,it must change! It has to be a mix of public funding and private heathcare. Only a fool would keep running it the way it is now.
@timelwell7002
@timelwell7002 Жыл бұрын
@@nearlyretired7005 Firstly, if large and multinational companies were to be taxed properly - even as they SHOULD be being taxed under existing UK tax law, then there would be ABUNDANT money to fund the NHS. Secondly, the changes made by Blair's 'New Labour' imposed a layer of middle management - actually a MASSIVE and mainly unnecessary layer - which has made the NHS far less efficient and cos-effective. This could, and should, be reversed. Also, Blair divided up the NHS into separate Health Care Trusts, paving the way for creeping privatisation. Moreover, Blair insisted on Private Funding Initiatives, which have burdened hospitals with huge debts. Thirdly, the creeping privatisation since 2010 has meant that money destined for the NHS has in fact been diverted into the hands of the (now) privately owned and run Health Care Trusts, and other out-sourced privately run businesses. Thus, most of the money given by government (ostensibly) to the NHS ends up in the hands of businesses which are all too often donors to the Tory Party. This is much the same as with the PPE Procurement scandal, and the Test and Trace debacle, where tens of billions of pounds ended up in the hands of donors to the Conservative Party - thanks to the so-called 'Fast Lane' for awarding government contracts to their cronies. It's called CORRUPTION. I can give citations for ALL the things I've highlighted in this comment. As to your assertion that other European nations counted excess deaths differently from how this is done in the UK - citations required, if what you say can be proven as being credible. Your comment demonstrates an appalling ignorance - or is that a deliberate attempt at misinformation on your part?

Hancock knows that Whitty had no idea about the Eat Out to Help Out scheme before it was proposed. He then says that the critical decision related to the "r" number of "the package of measures". If Whitty had not been asked about the scheme, how did Hancock think that the "r" number had been worked out for the package? Completely inconsistent.

One issue here is, if there are times when one person i government isn't listening to the advice of another or there are other kinds of disagreements in serious situations like this, we should all know about it as it happens. It shouldn't take an inquiry to find out that they were all failing to get on. They should be upfront at the time.
