I think Polk Salad Annie sort of got connected to Elvis and James Burton over time, and it's forgotten that this is not only TJWs song, but the soul in his performance is incredible.

This is so fabulous! He was such the originator! & that Strat sounded great through everything he ever played it through. Proof of “it’s all in the hands” One time I saw him turn around and get feed back on a small Fender tweed (maybe a Champ or Tremolux) and he held that note for at least 20 seconds! I lost mind! Lol The day he died I was doing vocals for my long and drawn-out Americana album & on the title cut I purposely put a TJW (Vocal-Grunt) near the end of the lead in tribute. An old band mate Pete Wilcox once told me that “Tony Joe is the King of Gypsy Witch Swamp Music!” (Of course he was So Much More!) Pete wrote a song called “GYPSY WITCH”. I think it’s on KZbin. Yeah this made my day! Love TJW! R.I.P. & thanks for posting this Joe! It’s goin straight to my Facebook Page!

Saw Dick Dale in a small club in Fairfax Ca. about 2004. After the show he signed the headstock of my very old Strat. While a gorgeous blonde was talking to him. What a showman!!

Tony once said he performed with Booker T and the MG'S as his band at either one of those pop festivals in the late sixties, or a series of them. I don't remember exactly. I think it was Atlanta, Texas, or Miami. Damn, if only there was a recording. Tony mentioned it in passing in an interview I read, but that was pretty much all he said about it.

Moreover, TJW also wrote one of THE greatest ballads of all time, namely the much covered "Rainy Night In Georgia".

I saw Tony in 1969 at The Texas International Music Festival when I was stationed at Fort Hood. In hindsight, it was a much better organized event than Woodstock. Tony performed with only the backing of a drummer and rocked out. Now on my local radio they play his signature sing and it’s just one great song. It was just this year I learned he wrote “A Rainy Night In Georgia.” Now when I hear it, I can imagine him in a boxcar, keeping warm and playing..even if it’s not biographical!

Tony Joe White is such an iconic singer-songwriter who was respected by his peers and his fans....he could play guitar, harmonica and sing (but, only when he wasn't playing harmonica!) and he was just so cool !

I live in Florida, and there's a store nearby that sells 'Poke' Salad. I was thinking of the song 'Polk' Salad Annie when I saw the sign, but couldn't remember who sang the song. Shazam, now I see your video on KZbin, and Lawdy, Lawdy there he is - Tony Joe White. Was that Charlie Daniels sitting close-by and tapping his toes to the song?

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum That's hilarious...I didn't even notice Mr. Daniels! About 25 years ago my oldies band was fortunate to be included in a number of local July 4th concerts. I think our second year...we were the 1st local act to play in the afternoon and were setting up while Leon Redbone played his set. Shortly after, a big fellow wearing Bermuda shorts, cowboy boots and a ball cap plunked a lawn chair down on the side of the stage near us for a ringside seat. Charlie Daniels was the headliner that night and he must have been a big fan because he sat and enjoyed the entire set. A wrap up note: We had a couple longtime musicians in our band...and a few of us who had plunked a fairly long time...but not played out in a band before. I had a theater background and was used to keeping things fairly organized...so had prepared set lists whenever we played. This drove our bass player a bit crazy because he argued it took away a lot of spontaneity. I agreed with that...but it also eliminated a lot of hemming and hawing and having huge gaps between songs. Anyway...we also closed out the night after the Charlie Daniels Band wrapped up. When I returned to the front of the stage, I looked down...and there was a Charlie Daniels set list taped to the stage, written large & neatly in black magic marker. It had everything they played including the encore! Vindication delivered by one of my favorites!

Joe, 52 years ago, I attended the Summer Big Bam show in Montgomery Alabama (sponsored by WBAM, the Big Bam), where Tony Joe White was one of about 10 performers! Polk Salad Annie was an incredible hit in the Deep South! My friends and I were staying at the Travel Lodge across the street from the venue (Garrett Coliseum), and it just happened that Tony Joe White was staying at our motel! We couldn’t believe it, he hung out with us for a short while, it was an experience I’ve never forgotten! Thanks for sharing!💫
