Pollarding Willow tree's

Pollarding is the traditional management technique especially for willow trees.
This involves removing the whole crown of the tree back to a single or multiple main "head" or "bole" from where it can re-grow a whole new crown.
It is a very satisfying task to do, always enjoy such jobs.
It took me and my colleague approximately 5 hours, all the chip will be left for a year or so, then be used as a mulch on beds and boards.

A lot of cutting, but willow is nice and soft wood, the 15hp chipper was perfect. Cheers mate 👍

Oh, man, great content, Jason. Very interesting. I know nothing about pollarding trees, but I had assumed it was done to encourage growth for usage. That's probably wrong, but, well, I DO know nothing about it, lol. Lovely countryside, too. Great to see your name and channel pop up again. Hope all is well.

Thanks Lisa, willow can be coppice to be used, but in this case, to reduce the top back to the knuckles, to promote new growth and restrict the size. Hope your keeping well 🙂👍

Wow…that’s a lot of hand sawing mate! How do your wrist’s and arms hold up by the end of the day? How many days was this job? Chipper’s make it so much easier, mine has been getting used a lot lately too. Well you certainly made a huge difference from start to finish mate, well done! 🍻

Thats a lot of great chippings, I have done pollarding, but never on that scale. That saw just cut through like butter, a silky I presume?

Hi Jason what trees were they? Couldn’t you of use pruning saw on your machine? Why such a harsh cut? Sorry many questions great job thou plenty of shreddeding was that a days work 👍

Cheers, they are willow's, always cut hard back on a pollard, it promote lots of new shoots from the knuckles, will be just as big again in couple of years, 2 of us did it in 5 hours. 👍👍
