These guys were just so authentic. They started out as a punk rock band, became hip hop legends, and ultimately blended the two styles together into something nobody else has done before or sense. Not to mention all the other styles they incorporated into their sound through the years. Epic. Paul's Boutique would be something worth checking out just on your own time, Polo. Coolest part of this song is that other than Yaugh’s bass fills, this entire song is one chord. They literally wrote one of the biggest songs of the 90’s strumming one chord for 3 min. That’s genus creativity.

It quickly became a hit in New York underground dance clubs and night clubs. They're a punk rock band.... lol. Surprise.

They come from punk music, so at least 2 of them have played instruments. And there are about 20 years in between. On 'Paul's Boutique' their love of experimenting with instruments was already pretty obvious, and on the album 'Check your Head' you can't miss it anymore, as there are a lot of instrumental parts and they don't claim to be perfect, it's obvious that they played a lot of the instruments themselves and assembled them beautifully into tracks. There were certainly influences from 'Urban Dance Squad' or 'Faith No More' at the time. However, rocking it out live like that is pretty confident...

Beastie Boys are just about the most New York band. Pure fusion of filthy punk rock and old-school hip-hop.

If I'm not mistaken, the guy on percussions to the left is Eric Bobo who mostly tours with Cypress Hill. On the keys is Money Mark. Beastie Boys have a song called Bobo On The Corner in honour of Eric. The DJ is DJ Hurricane. He was in a group called The Afros.

January 1990, I was a 13 year-old punk rock fan (still am). I had listened to a couple their hardcore punk songs in the New York Thrash compilation. I was at the Miami airport and saw a cassette with their name at the duty free. Bought it immediately. It was the recently released Paul’s Boutique. Blew my fucking mind.

Love seeing unofficial fourth (fifth?) member, Mario C on keys next to Paul Schaffer. Got to see them that same year, at Lollapalooza. They weren’t technically the headliners (that would’ve been Smashing Pumpkins) but they were basically the headliners. Blew everyone else off the stage!

Letterman was great at giving so many unique bands a stage to get massive exposure. No one like Dave before or since.

The video for their song Root Down is a love letter to the beginnings of hip Hop. In my opinion, it's also the smoothest hip hop I've heard.

Love the bass. I’ve never seen them live either, didn’t realize they were a bonafide band.

So absolutely bad ass. They used to play a whole section of their set on instruments. Instrumental interludes. Everything. Sick.
