They made great videos. The Boys had a falling out with Rick Rubin and they left Def Jam. They got the Dust Britgers to produce their second album, Paul's Boutique (1989). That may be the most sample heavy album ever as every sound except the rapping was a sample. There is a great video that breaks down the album and plays the original song for each and every sample. Once you hear enough from that, check thst out. It is great.

I was a little older, and a metalhead at that point so this wasn't my thing. Do you know what album the DJ was using? Back then I thought this was stealing someone else's work, but what the DJ was doing was definitely an art.

@@robotto8858 It's not a normal album. It's an album designed for scratching. It just has samples on it. So, there's a horn stab and a drum sample, for instance. Now, the samples are actually taken from other songs, but the album itself is specially made.

For sure, sample albums of vinyl or cd’s were ways to make simple clips become their own depending how they were used. Some of those samples became so popular being used repeatedly- but dj’s n producers like Mix Master Mike, DJ Shadow, Qbert, Square Pusher, Aphex Twin etc. did in such a way that it was iconic and timeless into their own genre

Beastie Boys started in 1981 - they honed their Hometown Brooklyn sound by 1983 Run DMC came out in 1984

Negative ghost rider, their earliest roots were as an experimental punk band, The Young Aborigines in 1979, and Mike D (Michael Diamond) was drummer and only Bestie Boy in the band, in 1981 their bass player quit and was replaced by MCA (Adam Yauch) and they switched their name to The Beastie Boys. Shortly after that the guitarist quit and was replaced by Ad-Rock (Adam Horovitz), and a gal named Kate Schellenbach switched from percussions to full time drummer, she would later start the band Luscious Jackson and is listed as a founding member of the Beastie Boys. In 1983 they had some local success with the comedy-ish album Cookie Puss, a 12" single with 4 tracks on it, including samples from Steve Martin's comedy album, and elements of rap mixed in. After Shellenbach left the band in 1985 The Boys switched to all Hip-Hip and got hired as the opening act for Madonna on "The Virgin Tour". Their break through debut release as just the 3 members we know and love was Licensed To Ill in 1986. Run-D.M.C. released their self titled debut album in 1984 that went Gold, King Of Rock album in 1985 that went Platinum and Raising Hell album in 1986 that went Multi-Platinum, making them the first Hip-Hop group in history to achieve a Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum album individually or all three milestones combined. As Chuck D. stated at The Beastie Boys induction into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, "Run-D.M.C. introduced Hip-Hop to cities all over the country, and the Beastie Boys picked it up and drove it straight into the suburbs.". The Beastie boys also begged Rick Rubin to listen to a mixed tape of some guy they heard at some of the local NY clubs, he gave it a listen and later signed him as one of the first artist ever on Def Jam Records, his name LL Cool J. Rick Rubin also asked the Boys for their input on an opening act for their first tour, to support Licensed to Ill, and they talked him into bringing Public Enemy along with them, which was their first time playing big shows outside of the NY area.

You're right to be proud of yourself. I was the daughter of addicts and I tried so hard to escape them but ended up in a relationship with an addict and got pregnant. I looked at that perfect little girl and knew I didn't want her to have the life I had. I left her dad with $300.00 in my pocket and rebuilt my life. It was HARD, but I gave my daughter a good life and she grew up to be an amazing woman who I am so proud of.

I love that every time I see someone do a "First Time" on this video, they always end up saying "What has happened to hiphop these days?" A lot of people look down on the Beastie Boys but they were amazing. All the greats from those foundational years recognize them, and they did so much more than hip-hop. They wrote and performed instrumental music as well and spanned multiple genres with originality and style. Check Your Head is one of the greatest albums of all time, in my opinion. RIP Adam "MCA" Yauch.

This record is a throwback. You nailed that. The DJ is Mix Master Mike. He won so many DJ competitions in the 90's that they allegedly asked him and DJ QBert to retire and become judges so other people would have a chance. He was not the Beasties' original DJ - that was Hurricane. There is a documentary called "Scratch" about DJs (available free in full on KZbin and highly recommended). They show Mix Master Mike trying to hook up with the Beasties to do some DJ-ing for them. He leaves them messages on their answering machine demo-ing his skills. It's pretty funny. Anyway, he is one of the best ever.

This video is cut live, all the rapping is live and the DJ is creating all of the beat live. Beasties are not the most technical but they always put out quality and they always leave you with a smile. For the record I missed out on Lupe Fiasco because I thought the name was corny. I learned later how good he was. One thing about Beasties is the were bigtime DIY, produce their own music, video, everything really, them and a few key friends.

This vid is from '98, after they linked up with Mix Master Mike from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz DJ crew (def worth a look for crazy DJ scratch band stuff). Beastie Boys came up with RUN DMC and used to do a lot of touring and shows with them in the mid 80s (Slow and Low was a RUN DMC tune that they passed on and Beastie Boys picked up), and there's tons of pics and video of them performing and hanging together. Cheers for this. I grew up with Beastie Boys on the cassette and CD player, and felt that as they grew as people and musicians, so did I. Very important group to me. Much love.

I just turned 56 & have been listening to Beastie Boys since I was 19 years old when I bought their first album - Licensed to ILL way back in 1986. My top favorite is GIRLS which is quirky & odd yet fun song that sounds nothing like what a Beastie Boys rap would normally be. The lyrics are not very PC by today's standards & some might get offended, but it is meant to be taken as a joke. It's a cute bouncy little tune - LOL! You should check it out...

I am a music freak that comes from a family of music freaks. I listened to all kinds of crazy things growing up from Zeppelin and the Beatles (20 years before before my time) to Fela Kuti and Charles Mingus. To this day, I am still finding music that I missed growing up, in my 20's and beyond. A wise man once said "One good thing about music, is that when it hits you you feel no pain."

This song was off their late 90s album Hello Nasty. They were also basically mid 80s contemporaries with RUN DMC on Def Jam. Arguably responsible for discovering LL Cool J. They are one of the foundational pillars of hip hop. What always struck me about them, especially after their 3rd album is being super original with live music, sampling, djing... nobody was really mixing it all together like they were. Heck, on album 2, nobody was working the sampling like they were either. I've always appreciated their originality and their ability to combine rock and rap... very do it and do it well like they did.

What's wild is that the music video version of the song sounds much better than the album version. This video is what Rap music is all about. The MC and the DJ. Rap doesn't need symphony orchestras, bands, pyrotechnics. It just needs the MCs and the DJs.

Dude I'm so glad you saw the music video cut instead of the album. Such an awesome version. If you were lucky enough to the their DVD set from about 20 years ago, you could switch between all of the camera angles at any point in the video back and forth. Was so cool to sit and watch Mix Master Mike's hands. Such a good DJ.

One thing that i loved about beastie boys. They are rooted in punk rock and played punk before hip hop and played instruments even in their hip hop. Also beastie boys were huge Bad Brains fans(all black dc punk band) and chose their name to share the initials BB.

A lot of people take for granted the music they were privileged enough to hear growing up. It’s not an experience everyone gets to have, I text my dad constantly just to say thank you for the music I love today. I was taken to the symphony orchestra from a young age, and my dad exposed me to Rush, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Metallica, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. from birth, supported and encouraged me to find my own music, but if he couldn’t afford it or if he had a different relationship with music as a kid himself I wouldn’t have had the same exposure I did.

Polo, the algorithm sent me here and I am glad it did. I’m 47 years old and the Beastie Boys are still my favorite of all time! This song was released in 1998. They were rapping differently by this time but this was them throwing it way back with this style. Just reminding the world how it’s done. Haha! I’m happy for you to be discovering the B-boys now.
