Robert Plant was 19 when this was recorded. Recently saw an old interview with Jimmy Page telling how he had Robert come to his house and had him listen to an old Joan Baez folk recording of this and sing it his way for him. Jimmy was blown away with what he heard and pretty much hired Robert on the spot.

That reference to Joan Baez sounds familiar........ if the story is true, Page and Plant are the best thing that ever happened to this song. And that whole first Zeppelin album which I believe was panned by critics at the time........ the whole friggin album sounds like a live in the studio performance. Those was the days. Wow!!!

Actually Plant was 20, their first rehearsal was on August 19,1968, the next day Plant turned 20. This album was recorded late September early October, over 4 days & about 30-35 hours start to finish. However they were all so young, & only together as a band a very short time before recording this, their whole story is so interesting.

We just finished ITTOD 2 weeks ago, next is CODA which I’m not real crazy about, sadly most songs were ones they rejected. Their early stuff was the hardest rocking. 1&2 BOTH embody what Rock and Roll was all about. It's supposed to be about. Technicians in studios have taken over the industry where everything has to fit into a mold. Zeppelin had it for sure... Tools got it on a level also. PLANT sings from the heart and puts his soul in it. Leaves it all out there. I've seen him 4xs as recently as 2018. He's different now but still puts it all out there. You never leave dissapointed.

@@JeffWall-rl1uuit’s the true passion doing what they really loved/love doing, not every band has that true passion. As JPJ once said, even on our worst days we were better then most, on our best days we mop the floor with them. He also said, whether there’s 20 or 20,000 fans, we always try to give them our best. Yes sometimes Plants vocals had some issues, but the way they toured, & the way he sang it’s not surprising.

My wife, whom I have strove for 28 years now to educate on real music, responded when I played this on the juke box in a local club we were in. She jokingly said, "Are you trying to tell me something?" But as I told her, this is a desperate, desperate love song. It is sung from the perspective of a man who is so totally in love with his woman that, despite what he desires to do, he cannot tear himself away from her. His soul is hers.

I was at a Bad Company concert at the Stadium and during intermission it was announced that more Zeppelin show were added and that the tickets were going on sale in the next morning. That was the first time anyone knew of this. We went from the Bad Company concert to Flip Side Records in Hoffman Estates and waited overnight for their ticket sales to begin. It was funny because everyone else in line also came from the Bad Company concert. Unfortunately the Zeppelin concert never happened as tragically Robert Plants son died and the tour was cancelled.

Playing this on guitar feels so nice with how you move on the fret board. There's nothing quite like it imo

This album was recorded in 36 hours! I’m discovering that so many of the older recordings I love were primarily born in the creative flow of the moment. Sergeant Peppers, for example, was not meticulously fussed over. John or Paul would come up with something, and it would be incorporated or not, but quickly, lightly. It wasn’t analyzed to death! Same here. All the LD fellows were seasoned/tempered musicians, so the creativity radiated brightly and quickly.

Zeppelin I is one of the top 5 greatest debut albums ever, that's just fact. And maybe their best album period. If nothing else Plant's voice was never better

Polo once mentioned something about young people who have to work. I was raised on a cotton farm in West Texas. We (us boys) were expected to work just as hard and smart and long as any adult. I remember summers when we worked quite a few 16 to 20 hour days, planting, plowing, irrigating, stacking hay, spraying, hoeing and working with cattle. Longest week I ever worked was 120 hours. Didn't get much rest that week. I learned how to weld at the age of 11. I overhauled my first six cylinder irrigation engine when I was 14. I was expected to be able to work on tractors, plows, pickups, combines and cotton strippers; discerning problems and fixing them without supervision. BTW, I am old, so I have listened to and enjoyed Led Zeppelin's music from day one. I am a big fan of many other bands of that day and time.

Robert Plant as well as others grew up with Dads who came back from the war and had to deal with that!! Europe was a physical mess, and these young men had to go with their belief in change especially music, which they did quite well!

Love watching you and the music you pick. Quit the cigars. My grandfather died of throat cancer from the cigar smoking.

That maybe, but smoking does not cause cancer.....just a shortness of breath and a loss of muscle power.
@alangil40
@alangil40 Күн бұрын
@@RassskleYou may want to research that again. Cigar smoking results in four to 10 times the risk of dying from oral, esophageal or laryngeal cancer.
@Rassskle
@Rassskle 19 сағат бұрын
@@alangil40 I have researched it. The untainted research shows that it makes no difference whether you smoke , are a chain smoker, never smoked, lived in a smoke free environement all your life, lived in a constant smoke haze or smoke cigars, cigerettes or rollies......the chance of getting any cancer is the same for all the above groups. As is the chance and odds of dying from it. The anti smoking industry funded by the German Bankers says differently, and use altered reports with altered figures and facts. WHY ??? The German Banking cartel owns most of our banks, insurance companys, hedge funds, stock markets, gold, diamonds and most of the worlds money. Almost anything you buy gives them some profit, no matter how small. Except the tobacco industry. The tobacco industry is self funded and doesn't need the German Bankers......so every dollar spent on tobacco is money LOST to the Banking Cartel.

Many people don't know that over a third of Led Zeppelin's music is acoustic. This song, The Battle of Evermore, Going to California. The Rain Song, a whole lot of it is acoustic.

Great reaction! One of my all time Zeppelin faves. I first heard this on record when I was 13 in like 1977 and it really affected me. Pure emotion, and represents a consistent core sound and feel for Led Zeppelin.

This song was originally written and recorded by American folk singer, Anne Bredon in 1959. It would then be re-recorded by a different American folk singer named Joan Baez in 1962 and it would be Joan's version Jimmy Page heard. When Jimmy was assembling the band, he had Robert come over to his home to discuss musical tastes, etc., so he could see if they'd be able to mesh well as part of a band. This song was one of the few they bonded over and Jimmy told Robert he had an idea of re-doing this song to make it heavier and harder, which resulted in the version of the song you heard. Yes, they were young when they started; Jimmy was 25, John Paul Jones was 23, and both Bonzo and Robert were 19.

Like others, this is in my top 5 Zeppelin songs. What can you say, just a great acoustic work by Page, Bonhams drums, and Plants vocals. I can remember driving home from work and if this came on the radio I was driving around the block until it's over.

They came to town in early '75 and then in '77. In between they released Physical Graffiti and Presence which added to their amazing legend. They played for 3 1/2 hours that night and blew our minds.

One of my favorites of theirs. It’s gorgeous and then it goes to another level. Powerful song. And executive function/ brain maturity age has become delayed over time. Age 25 for brain maturity is a recent thing. It was a bit younger then and it shows!
