It really depends which context you choose...A voice gives your opinions a platform, and gifts you with the opportunity to have perspective and knowledge on things that matter. No two voices are the same, each voice has something different to say. And in a world that needs to represent freedom and democracy, Bob Dylan's 'voice' is a powerful symbol of this.

Bob Dylan is arguably the greatest singer/songwriter in American history. His career dates back to the early 60s and continues to this day. He has numerous albums to his credit AND a Nobel Prize in Literature. Dylan influenced most everyone in rock/popular music including the Beatles. He started out as a folk singer with songs that feature Dylan alone with acoustic guitar and harmonica. By the mid-60s, he picked up an electric guitar and added a rock band. I'm partial to the early folk period. The music from this period is fairly simple but the lyrics are deep and the poetry is good enough to earn a Nobel Prize in Literature. A personal favorite and a song on most top 20 lists of greatest Dylan songs is It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) (1965). There are some great live versions of this song, just Bob on stage with his guitar and harmonica.

I think "Lay Lady Lay" is one of the sexiest songs. I also love "Tangled Up In Blue" (of course), "Shelter From the Storm," "Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)," and "Just Like a Woman." But you also can't skip "Blowing in the Wind," "The Times They Are a-Changing," "Rainy Day Woman," and "Subterranean Homesick Blues" -- and that barely scratches the surface! I've seen Bob Dylan twice in concert and he's incredible. His new music is quite good, too. And there's always the EXTRA rabbit hole of all the collaborations he's done with Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, and of course, his involvement in the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.

I know his voice isn't everyone's cup of tea but I love it. His influence on music since he started is amazing. I'll throw some recommendations too: 'One more cup of coffee' (same album as Hurricane and probably my favorite song of his), 'the times they are a-changin', 'tangled up in blue', 'blowin in the wind', 'subterranean homesick blues' (coffee is my favorite but I'd say this is probably his "best" song), and 'shelter from the storm'. And if you want to give someone else a try who has had a massive influence on music over time, try Robert Johnson. Blues guitarist from the 30s who -- allegedly -- sold his soul to the devil in exchange for guitar skills. And I'll throw a recommendation for Little Walter's 'Sad Hours' which is probably my favorite blues song. That harmonica 30 seconds in gives me chills.

The violin is considered to the instrument closest to the human voice. Scarlet Rivera really made the whole album Desire 1975 which Hurricane opens is one of my fave Bob Dylan albums. Dylan is a 20th Century bard. Dylan wrote the 60's protest folk song anthems and sang at MLK's march on Washington, DC. Dylan is the greatest singer songwriter arguably in modern history. He's gone through so many changes. He won the Nobel Prize for his songs and was the only singer-songwriter to do so. He is a total icon purist; the DYLAN rabbit hole goes right through the earth

I always like live performances better than recorded. Especially with Bob because he puts so much more emotion in them than you can on a record with it's studio limitations. Been listening to him since the '60s. And you don't get the energy rolling off the audience either. I think that singers, with a few exceptions like Adam Lambert, these days tend to sound better recorded because they need the technology. Bob sings his own songs, so he know exactly where he wants the emotion and the message to be. You know he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his songs, right?

I grew up on Bob Dylan (thanks to my mom) and knew all the words to his songs when I was a kid, but didnt really know the meaning of the lyrics until I was older. Some of my favorites are Lay Lady Lay, Shelter From the Storm, Like a Rolling Stone, Mr. Tambourine Man, The Boxer, Blowin' In the Wind, Just Like a Woman, Knockin on Heavens Door, etc....theres so many good ones. Polo, you could listen to any one of his songs and it would be a treat.

This song was SO powerful when it first came out and I remember (as a young idealistic fool) wondering how such an injustice was possible to do to another human being.........then I moved to the city. Thank you for reacting to what is probably my favourite Dylan song. After all these years, it still gets me emotional.

Dig into Dylan's early work from his folk period then follow him as he moved into rock, and hear the reasons he won a Nobel Prize in Literature for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". Include Blowin' in the Wind, The Times They Are A-Changing, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Like a Rolling Stone, Gotta Serve Somebody.

Dylan's 1st recording came out when I was 16. I was instantly mesmerized by that voice. I've been listening to him ever since. Thank for playing this masterpiece.

Great song! So much to listen to. I saw him back home in Mississippi in the "Rolling Thunder Review". 1975. So good live, great show and guests. I was in high school and just being there was so heavy.....always loved Dylan.

To see Bob's songwriting talent on full blast, watch Mr. Tambourine Man (Live at the Newport Folk Festival. 1964). Every bit an inflection point for modern music as the Beatles.
