When I took my kids to a carnival recently, I explained how the scams worked and which ones looked like they'd win that they probably wouldn't. If they still wanted to play for fun, that's fine. I showed them how many rings were being thrown at the bottles. It wa buckets of rings. Literally someone tossed their whole bucket at once. But nobody was winning. The carnival people finally cheated to help someone win because they felt bad about how much money she spent on the game. We saw one or two people win for real, which shows the very low, but not impossible odds. My daughter played once and had fun but was not too surprised or disappointed she lost. We played other games with higher odds and she got some good prizes. When it was clear we knew how all the games worked, the carnival people got a lot more frank and honest about it.

It's not merely that the thumb counteracts the rotation of the bar, but also the thumb removes some of the stress on the fingers supporting body weight. It is just like when we use wrist straps to remove some of the weight of a bar when doing deadlifts, or shrug exercises in the gym with free weights. It's still the same weight, but pinning the thumb under the fingers has the effect of transferring the load from just the fingers to both the fingers and the wrists, by way of the trapped thumb. The result is that there is less load on the fingers and forearms. THIS is the reason for the dramatic increase in hang time. If it were just down to the rotation of the bar being reduced, people would not even be able to hold on for a few seconds. The rotation of the bar is not actually an aggravating deterrent to accomplishing the task, since it is not moving, once you have settled into your grip. That is in our heads. Its because we are all quite heavy for our hand and forearm muscles to contend. Think about it: an olympic bar is not fixed when we do exercises such as bench, military press, dead lifts, squats, etc. In the case of military and bench press, the proper grip is thumbs under (with our fingers). The thumbs are not locking the bar into our grip, and yet, we are able to manoeuvre more than our body weight without the bar rolling away from us.
@ayupduck45363 жыл бұрын

This is widely used in olympic weightlifting. You train your thumb and over repeated use, it’ll get used to the initial pain you feel. It takes time, but it does wonders in terms of maintaining grip on the bar.

I use it for powerlifting and have deadlifted 275kg x1 and 250 x 4 with it. You really do get used to the pain, it just becomes normal, getting your thumb further under the bar and not jamming it up against the side of the bar also helps with pain.

Thinking a barbell sleeve could be used as a rotary bar, if it's placed high in the rack with a counter weight. Granted it will be a large diameter bar which will make it much harder... Problem is what you have done is prove it is not a scam but a challenge. The fact that you can beat the game through technique proves it to be a game of skill. They do not hide the fact that the bar spins, there are no hidden devices letting them change difficulty, so im not sure why everyone calls this a scam. What makes this a scam? The fact that the bar spins? Seems like a rather straightforward challenge to me.
@SeedlingNL2 жыл бұрын
It's more of a trick then a scam. As the bar rotates, the weight is moving more and more to your finger tips, so you want to compensate by rotating your wrists.. but the rolling bar prevents that. Unless you regularly hang from crevaces on the side of a mountain with one hand, you are not going to be able to hang on for long. Using your thumb as a gripping point on the other side keeps the bar from rotating, but even then you need to have trained for it.
@targeted19483 жыл бұрын
I go to the Knott's Berry Farm amusement park 2 minute hang challenge. I beat it the last 5 x's I went before Covid, but I recently went after they opened back up & failed after 1:30, so back to the drawing board to figure out how to beat it again. What makes it so hard is that the spinning bar is 2" (about 5 cm) in diameter so it's too large to hold it with a hook grip. You have to use your fingers, wrists & forearms to keep the bar from rotating & it really burns out your forearms. Update: I've failed for the second time, at least I'm consistent. 6/27/21 update: I failed for the 3rd time, but I did better making it to 1:42 but I also messed up, I could have at least been within 5-10 seconds of beating it if I didn't mess up. I made the mistake of moving my thumbs from the top of the bar to underneath it @ 1 min 30 sec. I fell trying to move my thumbs back over the top which made the bar spin out of my hands. I broke my general rule of changing my grip by putting my thumbs under the bar too early. The max that I could last @ the end with my thumbs under the bar is about 15-20 seconds, because the hand position usually ends up under the bar which makes you have to pinch-grip the large spinning bar from underneath. I need hang more from my rotating bar & some heavy wrist/forearm workouts & hanging from my fingertips from my rotating bar & eventually I'll be able to do the challenge again.
