Most of my comics are from the 70 to current.I love my collection especially my Conan the Barbarian collection, all 275 of them.I have been thinking of putting all my books into Current 2 Mil Mylar bags with full back boards. and then putting them into a Silver age 4 Mil Mylar Bag with or without a full back board.Am I going too far.Your thoughts about this idea please?

Another question haha. I've searched and searched but haven't found anything on this. When do you know to use silver age verse Modern age bags and boards on your comics
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE19717 жыл бұрын
modern age is about 1990-now, silver age is mid 1950's to about 1970 hope this helps

I've been looking for a comic that has a guy who wears mostly blue but has a circular design on his chest. There's also a mud like creature in it and some bad guy who I think abducts children and at a point in the comic he's holding a screwdriver. I might have already posted a comment like this before. I think there's like a brick wall and kids standing around on the cover of it. I don't remember the name of it. It's odd though because I remember specific details of it but when I google the details I get nothing.

I am just collecting comics for half a year now, don't have any key issues though, but after watching some video's from Mercenaut, I am using mylar since day one. Another point with mylar, even that it isn't that important, but they do make your comics look way better.

Because I reread my comics and sometimes the tape is hard to get off the bag is their a way to tape the bag so the tape comes off easy
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE19717 жыл бұрын
ok I know this sounds weird but use blue painters tape use a small piece. Painters tape is very forgiving and will not damage the comic, but be very carful no matter what tape you use.
@JaredOsborn9 жыл бұрын
You should show the inside of the books too. Old bags and boards won't round the corners, ding up a comic, or any such but they will advance the aging process a bit so that comics will brown quicker than they will in new bags. Like you I still have a few thirty years old bags for whatever reason and they just feel terrible too. I get a film or something on my hands when I touch them. Ick.

I've had most of my comics as a kid (late 80s to early 90s) in the same poly bags for over 20 plus years now, and they have lasted. But.. They have yellowed, they have rippled, and the flaps get worn, and the tape on the back almost melts into the plastic. I think some brands last a bit longer too. I just started switching them out into new bags, and after seeing this video, I wish i would have bought Mylar instead. So thank you for letting me know. They look so clean and neat in them anyways, and I'm ocd about how good my books look.

+DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE Right. It's tough because I'm just learning about Mylar, and I'm on such a budget that it would be tough to replace a lot. I went to a store 3 years ago in Denver that had all of their back issues in what I know now as Mylar bags, and I remember thinking to myself, "Wow, these are soooo clean and nice!" I didn't ask what they were then though. I'm going to slowly start switching mine over. I'm so ocd about how my books look. I was just switching a ton out for new poly bags and I noticed how it seems the yellowing of the back correlates with the yellowing of the actual books.

DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE LOL! Well, he's right about that silver tape though :D But the bag breaking down is not the reason why its all wrinckled up. He has a moist problem by the looks of it, as well as maybe stuffing too many comics in one box or leaving them in a stack for a longer period of time. I've done the same thing with a few comics myself, and they ended up getting wrinckled and some pages got stuck together. It also looks more like he had his comics exposed to sunlight too. It takes some time for paper to naturally go yellow. So IF he had those comics protected from the sun, I'd say he has a moist problem. Another thing about plastic, unless it a organic bag (which you do not want to use for storing comics,) it takes a long time for it to actually break down. Thats one of the reasons why shouldn't throw plastic bags out in the nature. When a plastic bag gets wrinckles, its because of it actually is shrinking and gets warped. That might be because its hot in your storage area. When I was a graphic designer, I worked a lot with paper. We had to have a air moister in the storage room to keep the paper from getting static, which could create hell in the paper feeders on some of the machines. All kinds of paper needs special treatments, depending on the paper type. Put the bottom line is that paper is impossible to protect and keep in mint condition forever. You can only slow the prosess down, but sooner or later it will turn yellow. Yes, paper actually has a "best before" date! Paper was made using water in the prosess, and some of it actually stays in there when its finished. Over time this will dry up, leaving the paper to slowly turn into a fragile piece which can croumble into dust if messed with. I don't know if there is acid in a plastic bag that can harm the comics, but your hands and fingers are full with it, so use gloves when handling paper material you want to preserve for a longer amount of time. This guy in this video you linked to, he better research the properties of paper and plastic before he puts out info like he did. I can see his intentions, but his facts are wrong though :P Buy hey! He can check back in on his collection in a few years. Either he will have repacked all his comics, or he will have a bunch of yellow, wrinckled comics with moist damages. My advice to him is to get a fan or airconditioner to improve his storage conditions. Paper is a bitch to keep in great condition for a long time. I've yet to see a piece of 20-30 year old paper thats still white. Im even willing to bet that all of your oldest comics have started to turn a bit yellow, no matter how well you've been protecting them. Am I right?
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE19719 жыл бұрын
eSeReS very true my man but whats funny is this is the same guy saying poly bags can last 30+ years under the right conditions. but the link I shared with you he says 3-5 years so that's a big difference
@Eseres809 жыл бұрын
DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE LOL! He probably got updated on some real facts and didn't want to sound too stupid on video :D But still, he managed to claim stuff that wasn't really correct. The problem is that people who are new to collecting will believe what he says just because they don't know better. I would like to know the dangers to be aware of and avoid, so I won't run into the rookie mistakes with my own collectibles. If any of my stuff got damaged just because I took a bad advice, who's going to pay for and replace my damaged stuff? That would be no other than me. People like this dude who mislead others are for sure not going to do it. 30+ years are a pretty far leap from 3-5 years LOL!

Maybe I will show one in my next vid. I truly think Mylar is the way to go, especially with key books. Also, you are a true collector. Thanks for sharing bud!
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE19719 жыл бұрын
Reapertate728 hey my man thanks for viewing and commenting on my video about this topic, I would love for you to share your examples so people can see that a lot of long time collectors have the same issue with long term use of poly bags. I want people to understand im not against poly bags I think they do the job that's intended for them within their shelf life. telling people that under the right conditions they will last 30+ years, that's something someone who is not a collector would say, but that's just me
@Reapertate7289 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, Don. When I first started collecting, I did not know about Mylar and I stopped collecting for a few years, leaving the books in the old bags. When I started again, I heard about Mylar and its advantages and looked at the old bags and boards and was shocked. The bags were brittle and the boards were yellow and looked like they were dipped in piss or something. I am not against poly either, but, in the long run, collectors might want to consider Mylar for those key books or any book that someone has a passion for. I will def show examples in my next video. Good chat, Don!

Hey don. Thanks for the link. A lot of my 20 old bags had the same issues where they look like they are sticking to the book.

Forgot to mention in the comment section of part 1 that I bought 600 Mylite 2s about three years ago from Comic Supply and love them. Ever since I ran out, I've been slowly taking "regular" comics out of them and putting in keys and covers that I really like. I'll eventually order some more. Not sure when though. That was back when the Canadian dollar was awesome so even with shipping it wasn't too bad. Buying them now online or in a store here is too much right now. Anyway, great video!

I just started collecting again about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. All my b&b's we're new and I can already see rippling in the plastic and slight discoloration on the boards. Just recently started Mylaring my keys.
