I have comics that I polybagged when I was in middle school back in 1985/86 timeframe. The books are still in great shape. The bag is now smoked over and really offers no protection. My comics lasted because I stored them in a dark box. Rarely took them out. The boxes where stored in a low humidity room. Keeping your comics in great shape requires more then just bags and boards. It requires a lot of elements. Some of, like humidity and nature, are either hard to control or out of control.

Same here. I'm just now changing mine out and my comics were in them since late 80's. The bags are cloudy and old, but the comics are perfectly protected. They last, they just loose their clarity.

Great video sir. I recently purchased some Mylar bags for my older books. I don't have a HUGE collection (3 short boxes worth) but I've also been buying a lot of the old Red Sonja books from the late 70's and early 80's, plus I already have some old X-Men books from the Dark Phoenix Saga and random issues that I want to preserve.

Don I'm a relatively new collector and I have every single one of my books (1200+) all in mylars because I firmly believe if you pay now you save big in the long run. I'm very happy I decided to switch over before I had even this many comics. I wanted a permanent way to protect my comics and mylar was definitely the answer. Every now and then I go and check my comics and they look as beautiful as the day I bought them. You are 100% correct that this is the best way to protect your collection.

Mylar bags will not keep your comic protected forever unless it is vacuum sealed. Even in a Mylar bag air and humidity will still get to it eventually. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that will eventually happen unless it is completely sealed.

+Geeky Gaming Corner to a point I agree with your comment no the bag itself wont make your comic last forever its the bag itself that will not break down, mylar bags will out live us lol. the whole topic was about the bags and boards not the comic itself. he was claiming poly bags under the right condition could last for 30+ years "under the right conditions" now anyone with any sense knows better, thanks for viewing

Comic book collecting 101! Outstanding vid- 3-5 years sounds about right with poly bags and like you've stated everyone's collection is different. I've had to discard hundreds of bags and boards cause of discoloration and the ripple effect on the bags and I still do- that's my choice- it gives me an excellent excuse to revisit old comics an check out their condition- I also place stickers with dates so I know when I placed a fresh bag & board on them- again it's all about preference. Your vid is solid man & hopefully people get the message- :)

Dude! I literally just re-bagged and boarded that McFarlane Spider-Man 10 today and the board looked exactly the same as yours with "It's Here" stained on to the board! It's been in the same bag since I bought it new back in the '90's. I just started switching out bags and boards on my comics from the '90s two years ago. I started with mylars, but it does get expensive. Now mylars are hard to find from the virus but poly bags are in supply. I'd say I have about 500 or less comics to go but I am using polybags with Full Backs for the remainder. I guess I will re-bag them in another 7 years. Some of the poly bags are decent and some are real yellow and almost sticky feeling. The comics themselves seem to be in good shape tho. Also, I find the Mylar scratches easy versus poly bags. I noticed this about 6 years ago when I would transport comics in a briefcase and read them in my downtime. When in a box, the mylar bagged comics don't slide as easy taking them in and out. Like I have to wiggle and force them in cause mylar catches on the other mylar bags in a full box. No doubt the Mylar looks good and eventually I will change everything over. *edit* I also want to mention that I've been putting microchamber paper in mid '90s comics and older. Figured it couldn't hurt anything.
@codrowley
@codrowley 5 жыл бұрын
I first collected in the 80's and early 90's. Everything was bagged and boarded. Then life changed and I stopped collecting. My comics sat in boxes in the basement for the last 30 years. In Darkness and low humidity. I recently inherited a box of comics from the late '90 early '00's. Many were bagged and boarded. Getting this box sparked my interest in comics again and I pulled out my own collection for the first time in about 30 years. I can give you an honest opinion of poly bags and boards of that era. First, it is all about how you store your comics. My collection looks great. The books of the 80's themselves look pretty good, but am horrified by the condition of the bags. The bags are slightly discolored, very rippled, and degrading, but still acceptable. So yes, a poly bag will last for over 30 years, but its "like new" condition won't hold. Now compared to the box of newer comics I received, they were not taken care of and not stored very well at all. The bags and boards are in horrible condition. Not acceptable at all! So if you keep them stored properly, and don't really care about the condition of the bag, it looks like poly bags are fine for the long haul. The real question is how will poly affect the condition of the book held within? So far my 30 year old poly bagged books look really good from the outside, but I haven't opened the bags yet to begin my re-bagging project. I could discover something I really don't want to see. Now having said poly is fine, I do not trust it for the next 30 years. I care about the condition of the bags, because that is a reflection of the condition of the book. I will be switching to mylar.

@@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE1971 So just a follow up for emphasis, the clarity on these BCW Mylar bags I picked up is unbelievable. Poly are practically grocery bags in comparison. I'll never be a true wizard (my collection will be mostly old Top Cow, Witchblade / TR fangirl), and I understand this video is more towards those with real collections (real bulk archiving needs), but it feels like if you love something, you'd set it free - into mylar I mean.

I just replaced the bag/board on about 1000 comics from the 80s/90s (+25yrs). Similar to you, I had many cases in which the bags had become discolored, began sticking together and boards in which acid had began to seep through and the text from the back of the book was etched into the board. I also had a few cases in which the board was still completely white and bag looked as clean and new. So it is possible on +25yrs old stored bags/boards, but probably an exception to the norm. (I still replaced these ones too!)

You know, what's funny is that this vid is now 2 and a half years old, and since going through my collection recently and adding my books into my CLZ app, I found books that I bagged and boarded AFTER this video was made that are already warped and rippled and just nasty! So, I've really toned down on buying poly and buying more Mylar, because you are so right about spending double and triple just to replace poly bags. the killer is humidity. I have a humidifier right next to my boxes (I have over 20 long boxes). My ASM collection is under Mylar and all my important books as well. The gas emitted from old pulp paper can do a lot of damage in the long term. That guy from "We Love Attention" is so full of himself. I disagreed with him on a different subject matter and he went bananas... Im not even sure if he's a "true" collector. I think he's just here to ride the speculation market. Sorry for the follow up question but it has been driving me insane since I can't quite figure it out.For a modern comic that you do decide to put into a mylar what sized mylar would you recommend? Current size feels like it fits rather snugly for my liking. I have been using full backs to go along with it. I have never tried a standard sized mylar for a modern comic so I was not sure if you had experience with this?

I know Current and half back seem to work better together in that combo. Wasn't sure if the full back made it almost impossible to correlate with each other correctly. I have been afraid to jam in the comic with any force because it feels so snug. Thanks again for your help!

I had a whole bunch of 25 year old examples before we moved in February this year. I rebagged and boarded everything that needed it before moving and went from long to short boxes. My comics were always stored in boxes in closets wherever I lived so I took care of them properly. Needless to say, the 25 year old boards were yellow and the bags were also yellow and felt gross. The comics inside were fine, but they clearly needed a new home. Even my oldest long box was yellow. After some searching, I found the video you were talking about and that is so much bullshit. I don't believe a word that guy said.

Good morning. I watched your video last night and found it very interesting. I then saw a video by the person you referred to, at least I think it's him. Regarding his video, I understood his primary arguments being that proper storage, vigilance, and maintenance would preserve comics in polys beyond the 3 to 5 years. Mylars, he emphasized, are of course better and expensive, but if the aforementioned were followed polys would be sufficient, but not for a lifetime. I came away understanding the risk, though, about leaving them in polys. Unfortunately, a lot of checks had to be accounted for in order for that to happen, which mylars would lessen. His video needs to be viewed with yours, though. What was most beneficial about yours was what happens when polys fail or what happens over an extended period of time ie. after 3 to 5 years.. Showing the yellowed backboards, the browned bags, are enough to scare someone straight and send them quickly to check their comics! Hopefully, animosity won't develop between you and the other youtuber. It's important for people to make an informed decision. I always enjoy your videos and I'm amazed by how many comics you have and the care you have for them.

Gore Vidal thanks for viewing I just felt that his video may have given someone new to collecting the wrong idea. I just wanted to show peole that I store my comics it the "right" conditions and the bags and boards do not last. they are good for the short term either until you switch over or until you have to change them again. I wish him the best of luck but I was offended that he might direct people in the wrong way to store their collection.

I have a question, with my personal experience on common backboards i have had new modern comics leave ink on the BCW board which is the only brand that my comic shop has, so i decided to go safe and get the E.gerber full backs, i got my polybags a few weeks ago, should i have to get mylars too?

Well, sure enough I just opened a box of comics after 25 years. All comics in poly bags and no boards. The bags are kind of stuck together making it tough to remove comics from the box. Once out they seem fine!! Comics show no ill affect from being in the bags so long. I thought they might have melted as for many years they were in a garage in north county San Diego which has very hot days. I'll be changing some to mylar now.

Your math makes total sense to me, Don. A cheap bag that has to be exchanged faster and more frequent than a long lasting expensive one is obviously going to cost more over time. The way you store it and the condition is always a factor in play here. Anything done with paint or ink will fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight. Paper WILL turn yellow over time if left exposed to sunlight. Even my damn figure collection will in one way or another get damaged by direct sunlight too. Thats why my collection room is totally sealed off from sunlight, as well as protected from moist. Even this won't protect my collection forever, but the point is to protect a collectible for as long as humanly possible. Conditions might be different too, depending where you live and so on. I do not know who this guy you speak of, and I don't care either. But its his business how he stores his collectibles, as its your business how you store yours. But when I see your math of all this, I have to say that I agree with you, Don. You can't argue with the numbers. Great video, my friend! And thanks for the tips ;)

eSeReS very true my friend in time everything breaks down so in some aspects of his video I agree with, keep your collections under the right conditions to slow the process down but don't try to tell people mylars are good because they are shiney and make your comics look prettier. polys serve a purpose witch is protect the covers for 5-7 years max then you have to change them out. in my little math diagram lol I tried to show people in the long run mylar are actually cheaper and will save you time.
@Eseres80
@Eseres80 8 жыл бұрын
DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE Well, its really a very simple way for anybody to find out for themselfs though. Take two identical comics and put one in polys and the other in mylar, expose them both to the same conditions for the same amount of time and see what happens. I don't think you even have to wait as long as 5 years to see a result either. Personally, I would have taken your word for it since you've been collecting for as long as you have. I don't think you would choose mylar just because you can afford it. You've tried them both and seen for yourself whats best. If people won't take your word for it, they are always free to try themselfs. But by all meens, don't listen to people with experience LOL! Some people will always try to ice skate on wheels, man LOL! But most of us knows how well that works :D

of course mylar is better, no arguement about that but if you put a book in a poly bag and placed in a comic box with enough other comics also in poly bags and leave it it will over time get all wrinkley and SHOULD be changed but it will not hurt the book to not change it until you want to take it out for whatever reason (read it, sell it whatever) and just so you know I bought my first comic for 15 cents, it was Amazing Spider-Man #95 so I have been around awhile as well on a posative note diet orange sunkist is the best no question!!

The point you are making is a time tested macro economics concept. The higher the quality of any goods you buy, the higher the cost will be to purchase it BUT the longer it will last because of it's quality, THEREFORE, the less money you will spend replacing it over al lifetime. For example, I have a couple pairs of shoes that I decided to splurge and pay hundreds of dollars on each on during my lifetime. One pair I have had for over 15 years and I have only resoled it once, the other I have had for over 15 and maybe have taken it to the cobbler like twice. They both still look great. The pairs of tennis shoes I buy at Payless or Khols or Ross for under a hundred dollars? They don't even last me six months before they completely break apart and I have to replace them. Sorry about the tangent but I am trying to illustrate your point. Cheaper is more expensive.

+Alejandro De Miranda thanks so much for this . you buy it once and you are done unless you feel the need to change them. but the person who made a video saying they were to expensive and that poly bags will last 30+ years "under the right conditions" is just not thinking things through correctly, but this was just my point of view. thanks for taking the time to respond.

To be honest I think that many of the 'acid free' and other claims are kind of gimmicks. Judging from some of the piss coloured polly bags I have received from 80's comics, it would seem that prolly bags don't last for 30 years, however quality has changed on newer bags, they may last longer. I'm sure everyone would agree that Mylar is far superior, I'm note very far sighted, so I get the cheapest crap I can find. How come you didn't get all Mylar in this shipment though?

I have to defend the "video" for a second, because clearly he has been getting a bad wrap. 1) Mylars are better than poly-bags. Everyone, including him agrees on this point. He says so in his video. His opinion is they are not absolutely necessary for keeping your comics in great shape. If money were no object, then everyone would be using them. 3 of my LCS don't even carry Mylar, when I asked why the answer always came back "they were not necessary". I'm sure they would order them for me if I asked but that's not the point. One store I frequent has some high quality wall books, still in regular poly-bags. Would he sell more if they were in Mylar? Maybe. 2) I have comics in my collection that are polybagged from the late 80s and 90s that are both in good condition, perhaps a little wavy, but clear and unyellowed. I also have some from the same period that are yellowed and wilty as well. Not all bags were created equal back then, some bags were just straight up plastic bags some were poly/plastic blends. 3) Is it absolutely necessary to switch your bags every 5 to 7 years? It's YOUR judgement call. If the bags warrant changing, then change them. If you have high quality books take care of them. This whole argument is snobby, and in every type of collecting or hobby there are quality snobs. Shaving enthusiasts will say to only use a straight-edge razor or they old double sided razor. Disposables work fine too. Wine drinkers will tell you to decant, let the wine breathe and then sip and swish the wine before drinking it. Opening the bottle and chugging gets the job done too. Hell Don, there are people out there watching your video right now going Why the hell is he using BCW mylars and not E Gerber. You get what you put into you hobby. The same guy that everyone is bagging on, is the same guy that has started sending out his key books to get CGC graded for ultimate protection and investment. Give him a break, he makes good videos and usually has great tips on keys to pick up. Everyone has seemed to have forgotten this. (Sorry for the long post) Mike.

DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE I agree with you, I didn't mean to infer that you were a snob. Heck I didn't even mean it as a bad thing. The more serious you get about a hobby, the more knowledge you obtain. As you become more sophisticated the old ways seem outdated. You video does more good than harm, and I enjoy your vids, I just thought he was being unfairly condemned for his opinion in not just your vid and I felt his "side" needed to be defended. (even if it wasn't completely accurate).

***** 1. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT MYLARS ARE BEST. There is no argument here. I already posted this. 2. Poly bags are acceptable for storing your comics in. If YOU choose to leave your books in there for 30 years then you are unnecessarily risking your books. The research has been done. Hell, Don did an excellent job breaking down the money savings in a 7 year plan. Again I said (and so did Don in his video, and Chris in his video) It's YOUR judgement call. If the bags warrant changing, then change them. If you have high quality books take care of them. In the end it's YOUR collection and you do what you feel is best to protect them. 3. My post was not an atttack at DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE .I never intended my post to come off that way at all. It was a continuation of the DISCUSSION THAT WAS GOING ON. I apologize to you DONCOMICBOOK JUNKIE if I came off that way at all. 4. ***** I understand and can see your passion for the hobby and this subject. But my objection really is there is no point in getting personal. I hate it when someone starts a sentence with Please no offence, because what it means is I'm about to offend you. It is by partly by others experiences by which we form our own opinions. You called me out on a couple of issues, I'd like to defend my position if I could... a) You said: I also think you are skewing your stores comment to make your opinion look better. They say mylars aren't necessary because you can switch them back out to polys again at any time. Did you even ask them how long you should keep them in poly and if so why not? No, you decided to omit that part. - No I did not omit anything, because I didn't feel the need to ask them how long to keep them in the poly because I already knew the answer. I asked about Mylar, they said it wasn't necessary. Think about this though ***** and please keep an open mind. If you were a comic dealer, wouldn't you at least offer mylar every time someone bought a new comic? Here is Star Wars #1, would you like a bag and board? Would you like to upgrade to a Mylar and Half back for an extra $1 (or whatever the mark up is). But they don't, at least not here in my neck of the woods. Even if it would make them a couple of extra dollars per sale and they don't. It just makes me wonder that's all. b) Please, no offence but your analogies are weak and have no place in the discussion at all. Keep it on point please. We are talking about damage and money here. - We are talking about protecting comic books. My analogies were about how some people become snobs once they become better educated about the hobby they were in. But hey if you feel I went off point there I'm sorry I offended you. c) Really dude come on, again, you are trying to skew the convo to make your opinion look better when there is zero relativity with what you are saying. - Alas you are doing the same thing. Blasting me and calling on my integrity "but if you are as sensitive as Chris then it may happen." The fact of the matter is, I am trying to promote dialogue, to show all sides to the convo not start a name calling fest. I'd like to say finally, that I hold no hard feelings to anyone. I don't believe that I have been disrespectful at all to you or Don, again if I did I apologize. I"m not sure I said anything about Don or Don's videos, but I do enjoy them and I liked both yours and his videos on this subject. I look forward to your next videos.

Brilliant video! If I had all the money in the world, I'd have all of my stuff in mylar. I have some of my good stuff in top loaders & some in mylar. This individual is not only irresponsible, he tends to twist the truth. There isn't just one or two people who dislike what he says (as he claims), there are 9 thumbs down on his 2nd vid & 7 thumbs down on the 1st one. He also claimed you & Nsidufo are his friends & that he respects other's opinion, but then unsubbed Nsidufo last night after labelling him as a negative person. What a condescending, pedantic, self-promoting loser. He's always saying how much corporate wisdom & experience he has; he don't have shit & I'm not subbed to him. You & the Chizzle have it right. Fine job man! Appreciate your expertise & sharing your experiential knowledge.

The Comic Book Aesthete thanks so much my friend I thought I would get a lot of hate for doing this video. but I got really pissed off when I seen his video, like I said there are a lot of new collectors that would get the wrong idea from his video and I would hate to see them lose their collection from the advice of a speculator. as you can see in the long run mylar ends up being cheaper and we never said do it all at once, do it lots. i think he should just stick to speculating until he moves on to his next venture.

***** so if some one called you out and was giving people bad info would you not want to set the record straight? he is more of a speculator than a collector that's not a bad thing that's fine. but would you get advice on how change the brakes on your car from a baker?

***** Pardon me, sir, but the evidence that was so repeatedly asked for was provided in this video. I could not provide the same type of evidence because I had switched out my degraded polybags with new ones. If you are going to "defend" your side of the argument, perhaps you should discuss your own experiences with the two products in question. I would take caution with what the gentleman from We Love Comics says. He often claims he has some sort of corporate wisdom & business experience. That doesn't discount the professional knowledge & career experiences of other collectors that are in different fields. Don & I are in completely different industries, but we each have 30 + years of comic collecting experiences, & I think it is a proper response to say that We Love Comics has misspoke. Let's please be clear, it's not that polybags are bad, there was simply a need to clarify the incorrect information disseminated in the community.

RAZOR SHARP With all due respect, the evidence that We Love Comics asked for was promptly displayed in Don the Comic Book Junkie’s video. I could not provide the same type of evidence because I had discarded my degraded polybags & had replaced them with new ones. If you feel the need to present your side of the argument, perhaps you can enlighten us comic book collectors of 30+ years experiences with your history with the two products in question rather than speak unintelligibly about whose side you are on. I would be very careful with what the fast & smooth talker from We Love Comics says. He often claims he has some sort of corporate wisdom & business experience. For all you know, he simply could be a salesman trying to own your testicles.

I totally agree. If I had taken the advice to keep my books in bags for too long, I'd be saddened by the condition of my books. Luckily the bags and boards tell their own story when it's time to change them.

If some told me they out lived their mylars I tell you you are lying!! I use mylite 2s they are spendy. They are very high quality and will last 30 years. Polys will NEVER last that long. Plus people don't even talk about the light protection. Polys don't protect from light!! Mylars will protect your comics from light.

Bill Christensen thank you very much for your comment, people need to know poly bags are great SHORT term mylars in the long run end up being cheaper than poly. speculators SHOULD NOT be making videos on how to care for comics they should just stick to flipping them
@abcomics123c7

LOL, right. Mylites are also just really sharp. I can safely say when I get a book it stays in the grade it is when I got it. I hate poly bags I literally throw them away. MYLITES FOR LIFE!!! Really I don't think it's opinion Mylars are better for a fact it's just whether or not people are willing to spend the extra money. I would ask what is better about ploy bags besides they are cheap?
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE1971
@DONCOMICBOOKJUNKIE1971 8 жыл бұрын
Bill Christensen other than being a cheaper way to store i guess something to store your books in until switching over to mylar if that's what you wanted to do. i mean polys are good for storing your filler books but keeping them in a poly for 30+ years and telling people its ok to do so is just reallllllllllllllyyyyyyyy bad advice

the intro of you talking about the other guy "he said she said" didnt even motivate me to share or let other collectors know about this video. The title should include a note about an intro in regards to another "youtuber" lol no offense, but I can do without the politics of the video. Its just wasted data honestly. Otherwise your information about Poly and Mylar is true value added educational wise though, I will say that. Thank you
