I speak 10 languages, 5 of them fluently. In this video, I tell you about my 10 languages, in these 10 languages, and tell you which of these languages I “acquired” vs those that I “learned”. What’s the difference and why is that important to raising multilingual kids, you ask? Please watch the video and find out!

Always lovely to hear polyglots story. Cross cultural marriage + societal multilingual environment + migration => + self-interest in languages. It's too powerful! and yes, when we grow up, we do thank our parents for language maintenance at home and moving us to another country. Anímate!' !把这份最好的礼物送给我们的孩子们!(i nostri figlio stanno 'acquisendo' mandarino, inglese + Singlish 😊, italiano e cantonese)

Wow, your story is amazing! Both of my parents are Taiwanese, but I was born in the USA and I've lived here ever since. I'm currently completely fluent in Mandarin and English, my Taiwanese is at a similar level to yours, and I'm learning Spanish as part of my high school curriculum. I hope to be able to spend some time in a Spanish speaking country at some point in the next few years, so I can become conversationally fluent in Spanish. If I have time, I plan on learning some basic French as well. The way you are raising your children is wonderful-- they are getting exposed to many languages at an early age from different people which gives them a huge advantage over other kids who only start learning a second language in elementary, middle, or high school because the early language immersion they're experiencing now will have a native speaker effect. Kudos to you!

Awesome!

This is such an underrated channel, really great content! Haha it's awesome to hear someone else understand and not speak Taiwanese but reply back in Taiwanese "you understand but can't speak it". I understand how important it is to expose your kids, like somehow even though I never studied Taiwanese to just know it from being around it makes sense. Definitely going to keep checking out more content, would love to learn more about how to teach our baby other languages.

Most French Canadians kids that go to public school in Quebec graduate high school being fluent in both Spanish, and English .
@AskTetsu
@AskTetsu 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Alex! I agree many kids in Quebec learn English relatively well if they live in or around Montreal and some English speaking towns across the province. Spanish is also relatively accessible to those in big cities, but I wouldn't go as far as characterizing it as "most" French Canadian kids. Many people do eventually learn it as adults through university or travel though. Clearly the 2nd and 3rd languages of the province though! Thanks again.

@AskTetsu
@AskTetsu 4 жыл бұрын

Your portuguese is really good! I'm dabbling with japanese right now, and have studied german for a couple of years. German grammar is impossible, the genders and cases are a nightmare. Thankfully, after I found your interview with Steve Kaufmann I understood that my problems were lack of consumption of media in my target language! I've improved a lot with netflix and acquired a lots of vocabulary on youtube. It is incredible because most of my english vocab was aquired with youtube and I simply did not realize that! Keep up the good work!
