The best way to remember words is context. I ❤dictionaries with added contexts in the definition of each word. When you don’t remember a word, go around it with context as Christian mentions. I do it often even in my native tongue. Don’t be ashamed of not knowing or remembering, it happens to all of us even native speakers.

I would argue that "afraid" doesn't mean "Don't know what to do". This is too far-fetched. Intimidated, scared, "shit a brick" or something along these lines could serve as a replacement.

Suggestions like scared are more helpful than 5 syllable words like intimidated or idioms which do not sound nice. Put yourself in a beginners shoes. Keep it simple.

Great advice for everyone! Even as native speakers my family and I often find ourselves unable to find the 'right word'. Rather than using brain cells to stare at the ceiling and say 'um', I try to immediately circle around the unknown word on known paths. I may not know a person's name, but I might well remember where I know them from, what they do for a living, hair color, etc. Even if a particular word seems necessary to communicate what's on your mind, it often isn't.

Good question at the first minute. It rarely occurs for me. In fact, there are times I cannot remember the Dutch word for an English one. The former is my native language. I often use a synomymn or general description of a word. So instead of finding the word 'desk' (bureau, from French in Dutch)... table to work on: a worktable. Thus a desk. farm - a place where people work in agriculture heavy - not light at all gold - a copper coloured, expensive metal snow - frozen rain in powder form

I said you some years ago: I can understand you almost completely when you are speaking to us, in your videos. I can't understand you at all when you are speaking with your sister for to show us an example of differents English accents. It's a think about speed, relaxation and confidence with your conversation partner, obviously. But, like then, some years ago, please, continue emiting this wonderfull kind of videos. You are improving my own confidence in my English fluency.
