Typical bulgarian person here comment, I don't know why you'd want to learn our language, but go for it! Obviously I wouldn't know anything about learning the langauge because I didn't learn it the way you are doing, but I could share some advice. For once I cannot stress enough how different things were 20 years ago so I'd take the culutural notes from the textbook with a handful of salt, not even a pinch. As for using youtube as a ressource I'm definitely all for it, there's plenty of good stuff on here, but if you do watch vlogs be wary that many bulgarian vloggers (from what I've seen :P) don't speak "proper" bulgarian. Of course you could look up disney songs with subtitles and translations of which there are plenty, but I've noticed some translation mistakes sometimes and in general poetic bulgarian is nothing like spoken bulagrian because of sentence structure flexibility which could be hard to catch on to, but theyre good listening practice nontheless! There's a series of bulgarian textbooks here made for foreigners which I've flipped through and think are very good, but I couldn't find them anywhere online, at least not on foreign sites and I don't think you can buy stuff abroad from ours :( The textbook is called "Здравейте!" and it has 3 parts (a1-a2, b1-b2 and c1-c1+) so if you want to look it up yourself you could, maybe you'll find something since I didn't look _that_ much into it. (Maybe a pdf if youre mischievous) But either way I'm wishing you good luck on your studies! I wish I had more info to contribute but there really aren't that many ressources :( Edit: I just remembered a website called bgmateriali, it's made to go with the bulgarian curriculum for literature and,, bulgarian, but there are grammar explanations there if you can find them, and everything is explained in bulgarian so it might be a bit hard to grasp

Native Bulgarian here. It's great you want to learn the language, I wish you good luck. I saw a comment asking why would you learn Bulgarian in the first place? - Honestly, any language you learn opens doors. Bulgaria was the country where the very same alphabet was made for the rest of the Slavic nations, so yeah Bulgarian is a great choice to start but it's a tough language so be patient with yourself. I started learning Spanish as my 4th language and as anything new it's not easy, but not impossible! Cheers!

Hello (или здрасти) from one more native Bulgarian. I'm so glad to see that somebody in this world wants to learn my native language lol. 😅 I'm a language lover (focusing on Turkish and Greek right one) and I wish more people were interested in my country and especially in our language because it's unique, unusual and fun. Also I would love to teach foreigners Bulgarian. Пожелавам ти успех! 🇧🇬🖤

You have such a beautiful amazing language ❤ you are so fortunate. It might be CONVENIENT being a native English speaker but it is in no way fun or satisfying or intriguing xD

@@AubzCelli Aww thanks so much! It's good to know my language gets the appreciation it deserves. 🥺 I get your point about being an English native speaker haha. 😅 Unfortunately when something becomes too widespread it stops being intriguing but English has its beauty as every other language.

Omg I can't believe someone made a video on learning Bulgarian. I'm just like you, coming and going with the language, personally due to the lack of resources to study. I'm currently learning Turkish but I'm gonna save this video for later reference, plz don't delete it 😂❤

Amazing video! As a Russian speaker, I really like how Bulgarian sounds and would love to learn even a little bit of the language and so it's definitely on my list. Thanks for sharing your experience and the books you've used so far. Having studied some less popular languages I really feel your struggle with finding good quality resources.

Great and good luck with the language, assuming you're still learning it, bulgarian has simple grammar, to english and spanish speakers it should be easy (grammar-wise), the vocabulary however is very different but this applies to many foreign languages.

I have the Intensive Bulgarian 1 book and echo your comments about it being a good informational resource, but one that is cumbersome for self-instruction. I haven't used the Routledge Bulgarian book, but I have used their books for other languages, and my (gentle) critique of the style they use is that it is far less systematic in approach, and more "life topic" oriented. Having access to both is key, at least for me, as I quickly become frustrated if a resource doesn't explain underlying linguistic concepts. Great video!

An interesting thing is that as a russian I can understand ukrainian, czech, slavic, bulgarian, polish languages fluently. But, a person who has learned russian, for some reason cannot understand other slavic languages. Could you, as a linguist, tell me why?

A think a native speaker would have a deeper connection with the whole language family. A lot of words in other slavic languages sound either archaic, funny or misused in a given context, but I have my native language to compare to on the fly and extract more meaning from unfamiliar speech than a non-native would be able to. I've watched multiple videos in different slavic languages back to back and after some time I just just start hearing and understanding "slavic" and the languages kinda merge together, if you're not familiar with them in isolation. I don't think you do understand other slavic languages "fluently" as you say, but as someone who has come to understand Russian while not being able to speak it, I think I know what you mean.
