my favourite humour in Elden Ring is when mishaps happen during co-operation; if the host suddenly dies, you only have about 5-10 seconds to respond before you're sent home, so they're always spur of the moment improvisations like a gentle wave at your dramatic death animation or jumping after them off a cliff, i love it
@hollandscottthomas2 жыл бұрын
I got summoned in to help Margit, charged ahead to try and pull aggro, but was mid-leap when he sidestepped me and one-shot yeeted the host off the side of the cliff like an unwanted toy. So I used the shackle to bind him and sat down to look him in the eye while I waited to be desummoned. Comedy.

I did an invasion in caria manor once and the host and cooperator were both at the base of the elevator that leads to the last grace, as I took the elevator down to meet them. My favorite aspect that I find personally very funny about Fromsoft soulbourne games is metaphor is nonexistent. You think "the path of the two fingers" is some kind of esotric left hand/right hand dark magic stuff? Nope, it is a literal giant pair of fingers telling you to do stuff. Use yourself to "kindle" the first flame? You use yourself to kindle the first flame, literally. You set your body on fire. Big Hat Logan? He has a big hat. Despite that I am always shocked that everything is literal in these games. I love it. edit: adding that I am referring specifically to in universe concepts and not themes, allegories, or subtexts for these games. In universe there are concepts that sound like they are some kind of metaphor of more esoteric or abstract concepts but are often exactly they say they are. Of course these things have greater meaning in a grander scope and in overall themes of the work. I just find it funny how literal they are in universe. It'd be like calling New York City "The Big Apple" and it is actually a city within a giant apple.

I think it's less "metaphor is nonexistant" and more another setup-punchline relationship. Souls games and Elden Ring in particular absolutely have metaphor and allegory built-in, but they're also full of metaphorical red herrings if you will. Stuff like the Two Fingers, kindling the First Flame, calling Artorious the Abysswalker, etc. being literal when they seem so obviously like metaphor is another one of the ways that these games joke with us. There are layers

The whole explanation of how games use absurdist comedy reminded me of how my friends all think the Hitman series is a very serious assassination game when it quite regularly breaks its veneer of gritty intrigue and shadowy organizations to allow you to dress up as a clown and knock a man unconscious with a blueberry muffin, all while Agent 47 holds the expression of a trained killer solemnly planning the death of his target. It's a sandbox for absurdist comedy that the developers very subtly encourage you to play in. I could have sworn that deconstructing Hitman's comedy was a video that Polygon did, but I guess I'm thinking of a different channel.

There are some tough enemies in these games. Enemies that challenge your skills and patience to their limits. The best part imo is that it's not the first fromsoft game that is just inherently funny, hell even Demon's and Dark Souls weren't the first. I remember seeing something about one of the King's Field games, where there's a trap chest (think mimic or the teleport chests from Elden Ring) that poisons you, but OH? What's the item in the chest? An item to cure the poison! Truly incredible comedy, and they've only gotten better at it over the years.

I remember when I first got soulsborne humor. I was playing the old hunters dlc and there was the guy in the chair from the first area. I went up to kill him… nothing. Then booom. Death. I remember laughing so hard at that

And that's not even getting into all the "finger maidens" in the "inner chamber" dialog...

The guy in the ad before this video looked just like Russ so I thought the video had already started and Elden Ring had fitbits for some reason

Loved the video essay. Super fun to watch and lots of points I had never considered. Someone deserves a raise!

My favorite moment is being locked in that dark room with the knight, inside stormveil castle...and hearing that cigarette laugh the first time. They say it's that dude that follows you, but I'm going to pretend it's the knight, bc it's funnier.

I think the core of "Get good" is the fact that there never is any good answer to "how do I beat this boss that I'm having trouble with?" because the answer is always "there's no trick, you just have to do it."

Not the same kind, but I find hilarious how literal the "two fingers" are. Overall, it's probably not 100% intended, but the whole narration is very funny to me, and it start in the intro with that narrator that just starts screaming about some dung eater.

I'll never play Elden Ring. It's not at all my thing. But after watching this video I want to...just a little.

My favorite moment was seeing a vulgar militiaman standing in the middle of a hallway, knowing it was a trap and that more would probably jump out at me from the sides, deciding to risk it anyway, and having a land octopus fall on my head when I got close. No matter how much you think you have it figured out, they always have something new to throw at you

Might be the best (under 20 minute) video on this channel. Great job.

*pie in the face* This is the greatest joke that has ever been written or will be written. Mountains will rise and crumble to dust, civilizations will ebb and flow with the ascension of humanity into the stars. Finally when we have surpassed even the physical form, when our bodies are little more than thought and shimmering stardust, it will still be funny to hit for one ascended godcloud to hit another in the face with a pie.

Came up with this whole video to justify getting a pie to the face. Respect the hustle

9:55 My initial reaction to this was "hey, but I've been on the receiving end of that as a kid and thought it was funny." But I think that actually illustrates your point further, because in those cases the people doing it were my siblings or parents, or occasionally close friends. Going off of what you said, I feel like this sort of "bullying"/teasing/playfighting, when done with the right context and relationship between the participants, serves to build up trust, as it establishes not only that one person has power over the other, but also that they won't abuse that power, and that the other person is okay with them having that power. This applies doubly when the teasing is mutual/reciprocal. [disclaimer] This is all just idle musings on my part, I've no idea if it's actually accurate psychology, though it makes sense to me.
