I have a painted steel box and I'm going to engrave a large company name. Could I cover the area in polyimide tape and use a co2 laser to burn away the polyimide tape, then use the remaining tape as a mask to paint it in a different color and finally remove the tape? Or would that tape not work in such a fashion?

With out knowing the entire application we cant confidently say that polyimide tape is the best option for you. We do want to note that polyimide tape would be an expensive option, so you might want to look into something more simple like a masking tape for this solution. @@strouse1211 Thanks, will experiment a little. In general - can a typical 50w co2 laser evaporate/ remove polyimide tape without leaving major residue?
