I watched this on VHS as a kid growing up. I remember trying to learn the routine and sing the songs. I finally saw the whole show live in early 2000s and fell in love all over again. 😍😍😍😍😍

I love this performance why?...... because nearly all Kapa Haka groups these days aren’t even singing they just shout, scream, jump notes and sometimes unfortunately are flat as paper. I love the Talents of Tommy Taurima. Especially his harmony structure that’s what keeps me listening.

I have alot of respect for PCC for bringing together all polynesian cultures and getting everyone involved, my uncle worked at PCC for many years, he did alot of his work in the Tahitian section and he said it was a great experience that opened his eyes not only to a different culture but it gave him a broader understanding of being Maori. Kapahaka is huge here in NZ especially competition teams. the Negative comments come from the 'purests' who have unrealistic expectations of a non-comp team.

Aotearoa was my favorite section on the PCC and my favorite portion of the show. The whole show was awesome but Aotearoa was hands down my fave. this video brings back great memories.

Hard to believe that this was something so normal once. Post colonialism though if you want to see this you have to go to specific places, it's not at all normal in most parts of the country. Many who live here will never even step onto a marae nor see a performance outside of school, if you're lucky as over half the schools in the country don't even teach Te Reo. It's a good thing there's some film because one day it'll all be gone from the only country it exists, New Zealand.

I am here after reading in a virtual newspaper that the New Zealand Polynesians were probably in Colombia before Christopher Columbus traveled to America. For this reason, perhaps there was an exchange of cultures with the native Indigenous of Colombia. Therefore we may have roots from the natives of New Zealand but they are still finding out how the traveled from NZ to South America back in the day. Greetings from Colombia South America...

Hello my name is Erika. I go to the United Nations International School. I am going into 10th grade and we have to do a Personal Project. I decided to show cultural dances form each continent. I really like this dance and music but first I need your permission to use it. Can you please reply to me saying I can use this exact dance and song. And if you let me use this dance, can you please tell me what the title of the song is called. Thank you.

@paranihiaanaru44148 жыл бұрын
+Zorc Necrophades No they didn't. So study before you come with things like this. Geneticists find Borneo and a touch of Africa. Polynesians came not from Africa
@thatguyfromdownunder8 жыл бұрын
Polynesians and Malagasy ancestors both share a common ancestor from south east Asia, while Malagasy do have a touch of Africa in them, they still share some common traits.
@paranihiaanaru44148 жыл бұрын
Where do you get these ideas from?? Because your ancestors come from Africa you think everyone's do? Except that we are actually all brothers and sisters, every one of us, Polynesians, as I said, come not from Africa. And have you considered that the Chinese also have 'common traits', yet Polynesians come not from there either.
@YinYangAK478 жыл бұрын
Paranihia Anaru Madagascans didn't come from Africa. How many ways does it need to be said before you get it?

@wahine27 Just to remind you of the purpose of the center. Many students come from their respectable Island's including aotearoa to attend BYU Hawaii & get an education & better themselves. Those who are not of the culture learn new cultures and become proud of that race no matter blood or not. It is a school of learning and respecting each other's race. Are the songs & dances not of Aotearoa? Have you seen shows in other tourist business? Do shows in NZ dance other Poly Island dances too?

@wahine27 you this is not even close to what you think it is. This is authentic, minus the mixed cultures performing it, and the lighting, and electric instruments. Today's show "Ha Breath of Life" is what you're explaining touristy. But not this video.
@lopaaione10 жыл бұрын
floor show version , not representative of Maori. Come down to the Polyfest in Aotearoa and learn a thing or 2 .

It's funny that you say that, one of the greatest composers and choreographers of Aotearoa composed most of the music and dances in the Maori section here at PCC, Uncle Tommy Taurima along with another great, Aunty Nikki Wallace and her awesome poi routines.

I have to concur to some degree with wahine27 - that is not a fair representation of Maoritanga and is heavily stylized for the tourist industry. I have seen Pounamu (Greenstone) that large before in NZ (our Manaia can be very elaborate) however the song was very much reminiscent of the 1940s and 50s "dancing girls" propaganda put out by the tourist board of "smiling, happy go lucky but not too intelligent natives" .

yup very touristy. but they are trying. aand i will admit it would be hard to learn all the different cultures. one thing i would suggest is that the performers do the singing. not some singers on a mic. and also the pronounciation is slightly off. however the singing is beautiful. overall its not my scene. but in saying that.. i am quite a harsh kapa haka critic. big ups to our Hawaii brothers and sisters!

I watched the Maori perfomance at the polynesian cultural centre in Hawaii. it may have been an old clip, but it certainly didnt do justice to our people and how we perform it was pretty shabby they were costumeless there were more smiles than action, the haka was sub standard and the repetoir of waiata was absolutely basic, for me i was pretty disgusted considering what is on display at Te matatini the NZ cultural centre and of course Te Puia. As Maori we display our best when it comes to centre stage and nothing else is acceptable. like the Te Ao Maori exhibition that was laid bare for the World to see what a unique race of people and fiercely proud. The Maori composition at the Hawaian Cultural Centre should cease performing until they recieve expert advice from the heads of Te Matatini. we are better than that
