You never cease to inspire! If I'm ever stuck in a rut while creating a song, you give me fresh perspectives to approach my creativity. A MASSIVE thanks :)

That melody is awesome! And you're spot on about noting the difference between a polyrhythm and a polymeter. A polyrhythm is a subdivision of one group of equally spaced notes inside another group of equally spaced notes so each measure starts the cycle over, whereas a polymeter stacks those two groups and it will take several measures for the cycle to resolve. Great lesson!

Great lesson. Thanks. Enjoy playing that little tune a lot. Great exercise for the brain to expand the way I'm able to think and feel rhythm.

I did play the overall sum of the rhythm as well as the "4" part before showing the example.

This is awesome. I need to implement this into my songwriting!
@axeofcreation11 жыл бұрын
Well, this example is in 3/4 so the polyrhythm will land on one (3 beats) every time. It's a 4 note melody over a 3 note bass line (essentially).
@delduked11 жыл бұрын
I think it would be beneficial that you start of with just an octave example 4/3 like bouncing around 0 and 12 or E0 and A7(tabs is what I mean) rather than starting of with a melody so that they viewers can obtain the "sum" or as I would say "feel" for that kind of time signature but afterwards do the melody so that they have an example of how the technique can be put to use. Just my thoughts however yours were very well explained.

The difference lies and the meter itself. 3/4 feels very different from 4/4. You can have 3:2, 2:3, 3:4, 5:4, 4:5, 5:3

I like to use a verbal mnemonic to remember 4 on 3 polyrhythms like the one you use at 2:40: "Pass...the-god damn ketch-up...Pass...the-god damn ketch-up, etc." Of course, you can always use a more PG version too haha "Pass the peas and ketchup."

I'd recommend: Training ex. #1: Play 4/3 using only octaves. Ex. #1 b): Switch number of beats of lower and higher octave. Ex. #2: Arpeggiate a chord using 4 beats on the bass-note and 3 beats on the treble strings (e.g.: p m i fingering). #2 b): Same as #2 but with alternating bass-string. #2 c) Use 3 beats on the bass and 4 on the treble strings. (e.g.: p m i m). From there on experiment as your confidence increases by adding non-chordal tones or omitting certain beats.

Polyrhythms are still pretty foreign to me but it seems to me that the rhythms meet every 3 beats. Aren't they supposed to meet on the 12th beat? ps. just found your videos today and you are a goldmine of information! Thank you for the generosity!!

What I find difficult about polyrythms is, you'll receive a phrase like 'pass the god-damn but-ter' for 3 over 4, but each syllable is not evenly spaced. ie: if I'm counting 3 beats I would have assumed the 1/4 notes counting the 4 beats of 4/4 to fall evenly between the 3 beats of 3/4. But the 4 beats seem to shift slightly, either just before the 3/4 beat or just after it. Am I correct in saying this? And is this why one's encouraged to feel it more so than consciously count it?
@axeofcreation10 жыл бұрын
That's because that "phrase" is 4 x 3. You should be counting in 3/4.

hey what about playing something compound where it has a different pulse divided into three over say a simple quadruple drum beat or bassline etc.? how would it work to play a 6/8 or 6/4 melody/riff over a 4/4 drum pattern or does that just not work at all?

@puffpaff78215 жыл бұрын
"Polyrythms needs to fit within a measure" - Well, not really. The defining characteristic for polyrythm is different pulse speed. There's no need for polyrythms to repeat evenly after a measure, but if they don't you ALSO have polymeter.
