We live in a democracy now if we wanted to ever change our belief system we would have changed it a long time ago when communism wanted us to change. As a southern Pomak (from Vodena) and an academician, I think that we are a separate nation of our own though it's also true that we have linguistic and cultural ties to Bulgarians and Macedonians as south-east Slavs. The religious identification is a very complicated issue since there are many atheists and some Christians among people who self-identify as Pomaks (especially in Turkey).

the nostalgia for communism is explained simply, everyone had a job, kept busy, but also drank, but produced much less than in the west. I'm a pomak and our language is a little bit different then the standard Bulgarian. The pomak language is like the south Bulgarian dialect but with a slightly different pronunciation and with some own words which don't exist in the Bulgarian language or at least with a slightly different meaning. No we are not. Some say we are Bulgarian, some say Greek, Turkish. I heard a story that we are a descendants of the ancient traki. But the facts are that we are a Muslim community and speak Bulgarian language. Even pomaks in Greece, in Xanthi area speak Bulgarian, especially the old ones. There's a pomak community in Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia as well, but the folklore and language - the same. You have the same rituals and traditions like us in Bulgaria. Even the clothes are the same, so colorful. The truth is that in the Balkans the people is so mixed that genetically we have the same heritage, but every human has his own right to be what he want to be. For example the ancestors of the biggest part of Bulgarian orthodox people living in my area are came from modern North Greece and Turkish people who used to live here emigrated to Turkey. So if you want to be a Greek, then be. Let's all just live our lives together like the people in western Europe - peacefully and with respect to each other. I can say for me that I am born in Bulgaria and I feel it is my home, I love the country and want to live and help Bulgaria to be a better place for living. But the politicians are those who divided us.
