Pompano Brownie it’s something on fish gums channel. He takes a pistachio and glues it to the hook. Pretty interesting way to catch pomp’s.

It comes with more responsibility. I had a game officer check my cooler for proper amount of ice. They can fine you even if you don’t have fish because you are responsible for getting the fish into the public food chain.

Great video. I've been interested in both licenses for a while. I'd be doing it from the beach. Most of the available fish in the central Florida area seem to be RSL. Whiting seems to be the the most common that is not RSL. The $5,000 in sold fish seems like a challenge in the beginning. I'm a retired firefighter on a pension so I think my income is too much to go by the 25% rule. So I'm wondering how hard it is to initially get the regular commercial license and keep it by fishing from shore? I think with the RSL it'll be easier to make that $5000 number each year. Thanks again. Sorry for this being so long.

Tom, anybody can purchase the regular SPL License. No qualifications are required. I agree that getting a RS endorsement is very difficult when fishing from the beach. One way you could do it is purchase a minimum 16" boat from a commercial fisherman that has RS endorsement and you could sell pompano for 1 year. That might help get you over the hump. @@tommyo321 I know this is old but ,it's easy to get RS if you do it in winter .and when you get your RS it's good for three years .if you have a small boat you can catch grunts ez ,porgy silver trout ,ladyfish ,Jack's no RS needed. I did ladyfish to get my RS one year with a kayak.i also did it one time selling bait .you can sell bait to bait stores if the hold a wholesale license. If you get a spl(50)and wholesale (500) and resale license (75) you can sell to anyone.

How am I to prove I sold $5,000 worth of product to get the RS, when I can’t sell said product without the RS?? Makes no sense…

A standard commercial license without the RS will allow you to sell many types of fish like jacks and blue runners etc. Those are the type of fish you have to sell $5000 worth in one year. Once you’ve done that you are eligible to apply for the restricted species endorsement and start selling pompano after that point.

I’m not sure on shellfish, you would also have to make sure that you were licensed to harvest and commercially sell shellfish as well. I would get it from the horses mouth and call Florida Fish and wildlife on those questions. Here’s the number. call 888-404-FWCC (3922)

Gary, I think it depends on the commercial fisheries that you sell too. Mine stopped taking them in. Yours must still allow it.

Gary, I took the liberty of creating a Landings report from MYFWC public.myfwc.com/FWRI/PFDM/ReportCreator.aspx As you can see the Area that usually takes in the most Pompano in Florida has pretty much stopped taking in Permit since 2016 probably due to no market for that fish. The small numbers that you see after 2017 are most likely due to Permit being brought in with a large quantity of Pompano and they were trying to be sold as a Pompano. Mel, the only way to find current rates is to obtain your commercial license. I would not divulge current prices at my fishhouse. I don’t think it would ethical . Just get your commercial that allows you to sell some common Fish just to get the poundage. If you can get enough according to current commercial license requirements it is well worth it. Once you’re in the door at the Fish House you will know current pricing and it will give you a good idea for the restricted species license that you need.

Mel, he should fish for the love of fishing and not try to make a living doing it. I used to break even on bait and supplies. The Pros are dedicated and work hard to turn profit.

@@PompanoBrownie That's actually why he wants to he wants his "hobby" to pay for itself since he got bit by the fishing bug but if getting a commercial license would be more trouble than it's worth then he just needs to be a bit more conservative on the fishing adventures/trips further away. We live North Central Florida so taking a truck to the coast isn't cheap on gas lol. He's starting to try and fish some fresh too locally and mix it up a bit.

I can only tell you what I did when I was there. If my catch for the day was only one or two whiting I would filet them up and turn them in to dinner. I always liked having a minimum of at least six fish before I would go to the Fish House. If the fish were ice properly you could always combine your totals for two days. But I would never bring fish that were more than one day old.
