A great look at some of this magnificent site. I finally got to see Pompeii in 2011, my original trip planned for 2010 having been cancelled at a few days' notice due to flights being grounded by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. So I was prevented from seeing Pompeii by a cloud of volcanic ash - that's Irony!

Since you are in Italy, have you considered visiting "Grecía salentina", an enclave in Apulia, not far from Kallipolis, where "Griko", a variant of modern Greek (this variant is more archaic than that spoken in Greece and descends not only from Koinè Greek but also partly from the Doric dialect... and has absorbed Salentine Latin influences as well), is still spoken (almost exclusively by very old people, unfortunately)? I went there (in particular, in Calimera) one month ago and spoke with some elders, who sang some traditional "Grikian" songs. It would be amazing if you spoke ancient Greek with them! The two languages are mutually fairly intelligible, more than Standard Modern Greek is - as far as it has been reported to me: this should be due to archaisms and the language being absolutely demotic.

11:12 it's a possibility, but contradicted by the LL in MELLITAM (as in VELLE) -but then again, the anonymous could have been writing MELLITA because (being literate) they remembered the orthographic form of the word irrespective of other factors. Stefano's explanation could apply to interstitial cases, such as (here) assimilation of M to the next word. Just throwing that out there

I guess it is written amantis, apis (insted of amantes, apes) because that's the way it was pronunced, which explains why in Italian we have "amanti", "api" (italian does not like final consonants). Also, it is not a case that final "m"s are truncated (vita(m) mellita(m) velle(m)), probably they were not pronunced.
@ScorpioMartianus

It’s actually a great deal more complicated than that; in most of the cases here these are archaic spellings.

@@ScorpioMartianus right but I don't think amantis or apis (nom plur) are attested in any writing and the graffiti is not archaic being first century, so it looks to me more like misspelling based on common pronunciation. But I'm not expert :-)

The name was fortunate among the Latin poets for whom it indicated Italy, while Spain was sometimes distinguished with the name of Hesperia ultima.

@@XcooldereX It doesn't matter and it's not even entirely correct. The Romance languages spoken by one and a half billion people are neo-Latin, as modern English (which actually has more Latin than Germanic words) is the evolution of Old English. It's just that since there are multiple versions of neo-Latin we don't call them modern Latin but we give them the name of the peoples where they developed. The most widespread alphabet in the West is Latin. What we are today is because those people who spoke those languages existed. Before them there were only tribes who lived in huts. Without Latin and Ancient Greek we would not have the world as we know it today. This is enough to interest us in the study of these languages which also make us understand the true original meaning of the most widespread words in the West.
