I had actually given serious thought to just buying a swagman roll. But I think I’ll just talk to a seamstress for $30-$40 instead of $169. Great vid 👍

Hi Prepared Airman, thanks for the video. Do you know what size zipper length you used on the poncho liner?

You should check out the Helikon Tex Swagman Roll, it's got all the mods you made to your Jungle Blanket, but it's thicker, water repellant, and it has a hood. It comes in Multicam. It's pricey tho, a bit too pricey in my opinion, but killer piece of gear. Not a bad price for the features compared to a woobie and the cost of a woobie.

I always wondered why they called it a poncho liner but you really couldn’t use it as a liner under the poncho very easily.

Good video. Basically you use the Ranger Rick conversion to your liner. You might add paracord to open end so you can cinch it closed on cold nights. US CAVALRY used to have a thinsulate liner that was twice as warm and kiter than a normal liner

Absolutely right! I personally contacted Ranger Rick Tscherne to thank him for a brilliant idea. I've got decades of use out of my poncho liner thanks to his mods. When it does eventually become unserviceable I'm going to use his ideas to re-work a Snugpak Jungle bag. (All I'll have to do is put a head hole in the centre)

@@dirtyscoundrel2013 Thanks buddy. I pitched the idea to Snugpak as a relatively mod that would give them a relatively cheap alternative to the Helikon Tex Swagman Roll &....they weren't interested. Never mind. My modded Snugpak Jungle bag is even more versatile than it was before!

Check out the SnugPak Jungle Bag, essentially the Jungle Blanket; same material & insulation, with a hood. (And note there are two sizes of Jungle Bag) Start on Amazon

Even with the military gortex coat/pant it drips onto pant & shoes/boots...I'm thinking of making gaiters/gators from a pair of the pants, or maybe leggings/chaps.

does your old woobie that was issued years ago still retains its warmth? im asking since sleeping bags loose their heat retaining capabilities and they too have the same lining in the inside similira to the woobie
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman Ай бұрын
I have noticed mine get thinner and more compressed over the years. Specifically, for me to notice, it takes about 3-5 years of every night use to do that. If you are using it occasionally, you should be good for many years.

I think you would enjoy one of the Jerven Fjellduken, probably the one with removable insulation would be ideal (Exclusive, with option of two different insulations sold separatly). I got the Hunter model with permanent insulation. They don't come cheap but have been used by the army and hunters/outdoorspeople here for years been a reliable bit of kit. There are a few other makes now, like Dovrefjell but those are really just chineese copies and not worth spending any money on. Jerven provides the best quality by far. There are some instructional videos on here done by the military that shows some configurations.

Did you make the upgrade before or after the military started including that as an upgrade or an optional upgrade? Check the Sportsman's Guide website to verify this. I thought the zippered poncho liner looked familiar before I saw your video.
@PreparedAirman

The Marines are the only branch that I'm aware of that made a zipper a requirement so far. I'm personally Air Force and they still issue us the non zipper type which is why I did it myself a while back. You can buy zippered ones aswell which I have a few just not the hole for your head.

Hi. Just for information. The Snugpak poncho liner is bigger and heavier and warmer than the jungle blanket and standard woobie. It also has a warm hood and arms built in so it’s a different beast. 👍

The old style gaiters is what I chose to keep the lower legs and feet dry. The newer style gaiters zip up the front and have a velcro flap that goes over the zipper to make it waterproof. Plus it only takes a minute to put them on. Mine are called snake gaiters cause they protect against a snake bit attack. They go from the knee all the way down over your boots. 100% effective.

Thank you for the vidéo, i like the contents you offer. Living overseas, i discovered the poncho liner in 1983 in lebanon where we shared some harsh times with the US Marines. The weather over there was perfect for that kind of liner. Since then i always got at least one everywhere i've gone. I long considered apply those modifications too on my woobies but in the end always kept them in their initial condition. Then lately i noticed that Snugpak and Hélikon were offering that kind of gear at a fair price... Plus with a hood! I finally prefered the Hill people gear mountain serape, much more expensive but the quality is great!! Still keep my woobies as an extra layer and as insulation on my cot. I love them!! Stay safe and keep going!!
