I'm facing a similar situation with a 1/3 acre pond in a house we just moved into. The previous owner had just left it for a few years. I've got the aerators in, but as you've found out, they don't do anything directly with algae or with duckweed. What they do is feed the aerobic microbes that eat the excess nutrients in the water, both in the water column and on the bottom. Our pond looks a little better after 6 weeks, but is still pretty green. I'm looking into various bacteria products that I can add to help reduce the muck. It's July right now, and I'm expecting it to take until Spring to bring my pond back to full health. I never expected to have to learn this much about pond maintenance!

Patrick, this learning curve is steep! I appreciate your learning attitude, I’ve had many tell me what I was doing wrong and it looks like you have a great plan and patience. I have started using Flumigard to remove water meal and other algae issues. Duckweed seemed to leave with the water movement of the aerator. Hated using the herbicide, but after the kill happened, the aerator is doing a good job at keeping things clean. I also started to apply dye monthly

@@YoungbloodFamilyFarm I live in Texas, and Texas A&M has county agricultural extensions that will come out and check your pond for free. They're often overbooked and it may take a while. They even offered to give us licenses for triploid (non-reproducing) carp to eat up all of the weeds. Not sure where you are at, but check out to see what expertise you can bring in for free. We brought in a commercial guy to check out our pond and give us advice on maintenance, erosion, and overflow to adjacent lake. He was a wealth of information as well.

My Hiblow pump has been in 1.5 years now with no improvement in algae control. Running 2 (100') lines for .75 acre pond (avg 8' deep). I was hoping the aerator would do the trick. I'm going to try copper sulfate next then maybe some pond dye last.

Aeration is not going to get rid of vegetation in your pond. It will keep you from having a low oxygen crisis at night as that is when the plants pull O2 out of the water. You'll need an aquatic herbicide as you mentioned.

I would go with a skimmer dredge, it would pull the duck mill off the top, send it some where away from the pond, then let the water filter back to the pond, as well as the current system of the aerator.

I like the sound of this, I have just not been able to find a simple plan. Any that I find are complicated and expensive. I tried to build a floating boom out of a 100 foot long plastic deer net, worked for duckweed but not water meal. I’m certain it will take years to rid this stuff

@@YoungbloodFamilyFarm I have the same issue with my small pond. this is why after a drain & dredge operation this summer I will be putting in a surface siphon system to clear the surface, pump the duck mill into my woods [for the critters to eat] & the water will drain back into my pond. But I have a 10-15 foot elevation change for drainage into my pond. So it is easy for the water to return back. You should look at some topographical maps of your property to see if this would work for you.

Hey man, nice job. I have a pond that looks like yours and I am doing my research. One thing I have read is only have it on from say midnight to 8 am. Then late fall put it away for the winter. The theory is not to bring in the hotter water into your pond (or the super cold either). I watched this other guys video and he said his pond actually got worse while leaving the pump on 24/7.
@YoungbloodFamilyFarm

The manufacturer of this pond kit says that this should run 24/7. Yes, it makes sense that more oxygen would cause more growth, however I need to make muck reduction the primary goal and watermeal/duckweed needs to be my secondary goal.

Great video!!! But unfortunately an aerator will do absolutely zero for controlling duckweed and water meal. The movement caused by the aerator will simply push it towards the banks. Check out a product called SONAR but be prepared for sticker shock. SONAR is the only product that I've heard of that can kick the crap out of water meal (which is extremely tough). My buddy had the same issues as you and SONAR made it crystal clear about 3 weeks after he applied it. Do your research as you may be better off to wait until next spring. Not sure how your winters are where you live. Looking forward to hearing about your solution. Good luck!

You are not going to stop life if there are sufficient sunlight and nutrients, period. Get rid of as much of the organic material as possible, and get as many plants, lillys, etc in there to compete with algae. Get some algae grazers as well, and some pond dye. Chemicals are a temp solution that will bounce back with a mega-boom unless you address either sunlight, available nutrients, etc.

If you built an intake bay it would pull all of your duck weed and other waste on top of the water into the bay than you would be able to scoop it out with a net. You would have than a clean pond. It works.

grass carp will eat that vegetation and are genetically modified to not procreate, they can live about ten years. 3-5 grass carp would do a number on your weeds. install a backflow valve behind your diffuser to prevent water filling your airline. irrigation hose or garden hose with some lengths of chain ziptied to it would move air. a small bag of concrete could be worked into little ingots and then attached to sink a hose. you could seine most of that weed with a fine mesh net or even a low thread count bed sheet in a couple hours. you might want to reinstall the diffuser to the deepest point of the pond - that is the most efficient use of the aerator

Although i have read that they are a long term solution. I bought the Hiblow 100LL after seeing other videos and ran two diffusers but after a few weeks i cant really see any difference. Can anyone give me any suggestions or am i just being impatient?

I found the aerator created movement and rotation in my pond, I was able to see the duckweed and watermeal move about. However, I ended up using Flumigard (herbicide) with Alegare 90 (surfactant). And put them in a sprayer. I also have been deligent at removing vegetation, keeping grass clippings out, and really any fertilizer type item. I have kept pond dye in the pond routinely as well as pond bacteria. I know it’s a lot, but worth it. And it takes time, lots of time

This is really sad. I've got a 50' pond, nowhere near as bad as yours. Gotta say, would it kill you to go out some Sat morning with one of those pool pole skimmers and actually pull out a lot of that algae on the top? Or get some fine netting w/100' of rope and sting it across and you and a friend walk along opposite sides of the pond to clear it up a bit. Why would you think adding O2 is going to decrease algae? Did you try a google search? 1. Get in there and remove as much algae as you can. Letting algae grow, then die and sink to the bottom creates perfect storm for future algae blooms. 2. Get some pond dye, which will decrease the amount of sunlight penetrating the pond, which reduces algae 3. Look up Barley Straw 4. Stock your pond with some algae grazers 5. Run physical filtration or UV 6. Try get a couple of moderate wattage water pumps to get the water moving vs bubbling air.

@@YoungbloodFamilyFarm i was told that natural ponds have a 7-8 year cycle were naturally they die unless very deep and constantly filled with water. To beat this every 3-4yrs at least 50% should be dredged. Large fast growing plants like water iris (reads and rushes) as said before. Im not a fan of dying the water but is does cut the photosynthesis. You could add a couple more aerators too!

Way fixable..... 1st you need to use a pool net and manually skim every day for about a week. The kids would probably do 90% 2nd.... You need to use the same pump but with 4 heads. Put a 90° pvc turn on the top so the water flow isn't going straight up and out in all 360°. Instead have it coming out "directionally". Point all 4 heads in a manner so the water is traveling clock wise in a circular direction.... or counter clockwise.... but also slightly angled towards shore. Then the future net scooping from shore is SUPER easy and required way less frequently, if at all..... Literally..... one week and all you'll have are those floating water hyacinths.... which can overtake a waterway too. But....They're also easy to remove..... especially if you have a small jon boat or are willing to enter the water.... a tire tub would be effective. But those water hyacinths provide a lot of water shade... A 6' boarder around the shoreline, except your entry point, would be very healthy for your pond.... even keeping them THICK on the far side. Nice pond... I hope you turn it into a recreational playground.....slash water garden.

@franram7426
@franram7426 2 жыл бұрын
@@YoungbloodFamilyFarm Depends on the "freeze". I grew up in north Florida. It never froze hard enough to kill.... maybe brown some tops but the water was always above 45 to 50 degrees. Now.... North of Atlanta??? IDK. Closer to the coast ..... Myrtle Beach??? Probably fine. I swear it looks like the exact same lake. Obviously not. But my nephew just bought a lake. Same size.... 75yards x 100 yrads...with those same 1 mm floating plants that blanket the surface. I used a minnow "dip net" and pulled out an area 6'x6' in 3 minutes. Just swiping and shaking it onto the bank. With a 10' pole and a pool leaf skimmer net..... I/You could sweep off A LOT in one hour. Every day you do that..... Then that solo bubbler will start moving the plants from out there towards the area you removed plants over night. Keep repeating..... You'll make progress. In this clip..... They have nowhere to go. That bubbler is TRYING to move surface floating plants until there's a "trafic jam".... Remove plants and let that bubbler move what's in the middle to the bank.... and who cares about the far side. It actually looks more "natural" with it. It's only the close side and out to your floating dock that counts. Good luck.
