Alrighty man, I def need to connect with you about pond management!! My name is Beau with Better Together Homestead. We are just now digging our pond, it’ll be kind of small at only 1/3 acres. But my wife wants to swim the pond so we really want to make it as clean as possible while still having good ecology for the fish. Thanks for the videos!! You’re doing great!

Hi Beau! Thanks for the nice comments. It's nice to meet you. I'm happy to chat more about your pond/pond build. Since building ours it has become a bit of a passion of mine. The balance between a swimming pond and fishing pond is definitely what we are trying to achieve too. Despite being a large channel, I hadn't seen yours so I'm excited to look back on your journey and follow along. I look forward to chatting more soon. Feel free to reach out via email. The reason people may comment that you shouldn't dye your pond is probably because plankton and phytoplankton blooms are prevented from the dye. And that is the bottom of the food chain for fish. Most people who are trying to grow trophy fish want good plankton blooms. That is the reason why they'll lime/fertilize their water. Fertile water can support more pounds of fish per acre by a lot over non fertile water. If you don't care about growing fish then, you're right, there is not much not to like about dying your pond.

Where I grew up the the Hudson Valley... There is so much clay muck... That the ponds, there, bloom every year... They need these aerators to process the dead p!ant material, algae and the ensuing blooms, sucking up all the oxygen. The dye seems to help those ponds to support large fish that would otherwise not survive.

Have you thought of painting the shingles white? That would cool down the box and extend the life of your pump. I run a solar build and painting the shingles made a big difference

You are the 3rd or 4th person who has suggested that. It didn't cross my mind at the time, but I should probably consider it. I think as long as those fans keep running I'm OK. If they fail I may be in trouble...at which point I'll definitely have the paint out. Ha

Dying a pond is an owner's personal choice, and really should only be used for purely aesthetic ponds instead of ponds where "good" fishing is the primary goal. What Dye makers never tell you is that when sunlight is blocked. available nutrients in the pond are are increased considerably because plant uptake is blocked. Filamentous algal growth is increased in the shallow areas where sunlight penetration can't be blocked due to the much higher level of available, unused nutrients. Also, if you like your pond for fishing, Dye used regularly can decrease the carrying capacity (total pounds of fish any pond can support) of a pond by as much as 75% and cause severe stunting of the fish due to the severe reduction of food production limiting sunlight causes

I do need to paint them. I'm not a pool expert and don't know what it would do to the pumps. Probably wouldn't hurt anything, but maybe ask a pool specialist

Ahh I'm with ya. For me, the dye is two fold. 1. To deter algae growth. 2. To be aestheticly pleasing to the eye so that my wife, kids, and everyone else is more apt to swim in it. Us pond folks know that the workhorse of clear water is the aerator!

This just seems like an utterly dumb thing to do. Other than reducing Algae growth, there's just no point.

But reducing algae growth is important. We personally like the look of it too. To each their own I suppose.
