Pond fish that do well in Australian garden ponds

I made this quick little video to show some of the pond fish that do well in Australian ponds. I have many ponds around my house and wanted to keep fish other than goldfish.
There are many species of fish that will thrive in an Australian garden pond. Exotic fish like white clouds, barbs, guppies, mollies and platy's. Or Australian fish like southern pygmy perch, rainbow fish, gudgeons, pacific blue eyes, even bass!
There are many more but these are all readily available form local pet stores and even online, delivered to your door!
And keep in mind a pond doesn't need to just be a home for fish! We can incorporate turtles, yabbies, shrimp and fresh water mussels in our garden ponds. So many options!

I'm suprised to read Rosy Barbs in Victoria - most sites are unanimous that they don't like less than 18 degrees.

They say the same about cherry shrimp. I’ve kept them outside all winter. Seems a lot of things are tougher than they want us to believe.

Goldfish are always a best choice as most of Australia never gets to cold

The toughest pond fish would have to be the goldfish or White Cloud Mountain minnows. Goldfish you’ll obviously see better, but if the pond is a small container pond probably better off with the shot clouds.

i have problems with goldfish i can never keep them alive for very long Rosy Barbs on the other hand have been going strong and the native guppies do ok

How do the barbs go in your pond? I was told not to put them with in my pond also in Vic. I've got Murray rainbows, goldfish of course, minnows and couple breeds of catfish with a pond 1500ltr with falls.

The barbs need to come inside for the winter. At least in the small barrel pond that I had them in. The water just got too cold. I’d be interested to try them in a larger body of water with more stable temperatures (1500 is probably still too small). I’m curious what breeds of catfish you have in your pond?

Can i have aussie bass goldfish and murray river ranbows together

The rainbows and goldies would be fine together. The Aussie bass will eat anything it can.

They are definitely harder to see, but those herons are patient and persistent.

White clouds, rainbow fish, Pygmy perch, blue-eyes are all cold tolerant and will live with goldfish in a pond.

Is there any legal things with depth

Most states have no depth restriction on fish ponds. I always recommend sending your local council an email. They will direct you to the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

No real depth requirement but please be careful if you have kids around add a fence or mesh on top of the water to prevent drowning.
