I don't think enough people appreciate the difficulty of moving these large pieces of stone around. Amazing you guys still have healthy backs!

I notice most all ponds are constructed using rock of volcanic origin. I live in a kansas on farmland where we are constantly removing and clearing limestone from our fields. Many of these are very large stones up to the size of a truck bed in some cases. They would make fanstastic accent stones when I build a pond of my own and tie into the natural landcape and hardscape around here. Not to mention the cost savings of using rock that as of now is merely a byproduct of our activities and that I already own and wouldnt need to truck in. Would using limestone act as a buffer or otherwise affect water quality or ph in a pond and should it be avoided? This pond is coming along nicely in this series of videos! Keep up the good work! I don't see your trucks in your videos anymore either, bring them back!

Derek Blackston Hey Derek, Thanks for the great question. I know a lot of pond builders that have used limestone over the years. I have not run across any horrible stories from the usage of the rock. Here are some things to consider. Limestone will likely raise the ph in your pond. We have extremely hard and alkaline water in So Cal so buffering our water up more would not be a great idea. Check your water to see if you have room for the buffer. If you plan on rocking your entire pond from top to bottom consider using the limestone on the coping rocks and waterfalls only. Rinse the limestone well before installation and consider giving it a rinse with muriatic acid. Know that upon initial installation you will likely see a spike in ph and Once you develop a bio film on the rock the buffering will slow down. Hope that helps.

The earth moves quite a bit in your part of the world. Is there any danger of these large stones being shaken into the pond? Is it something the DIYer should be mindful of?
@ThePondDigger10 жыл бұрын
Lawrence5762 Yes we are in earthquake territory. In nearly 20 years of building we have yet to have an earthquake move our rock work out of place. The Earthquakes we experience frequently are rolling kind of quakes. The last ridiculous quake I experienced was in 1992 in Landers. A 7.6 powerhouse that was less than 10 miles from my home at the time. It was a shocker!!!! I only had 3 ponds in the ground at that time……. Hope that answers your question.

Whahhaha maybe get some steel boots, paint them pink and get some diamond or studs on them to make them more fashionable an option? Then they look cute and here toes also when she ever drops a stone on them ;)
