@Geoff Lawton Could you elaborate a bit more on what type of polymer this is? Some (not necessary all) polymers are plastic of the worst kind, i mean the type the oceans are full of! I wouldn't want that in my pond, because it'll eventually end up as micro plastic in the food chain...

I would add, that in poorly built aquaculture ponds, that basically leak, before getting to polymers, a very good option is silting. This can be done by pumping in water with clay and letting it set, and subsequently, densely fill the pond with fish and feeding them. Fish dejections act rapidly as silting material. Look up FAO literature on tis matter from the 1980ies.

It's ethical to use PAM for sealing ponds? Besides the high neurotoxic and water soluble acrylamide released by decomposition (www.nature.com/articles/s41545-018-0016-8 ) eventually also biodegradable in time ( i would be careful to apply it in an acidic high iron content soil) such companies produces PAM mainly for the fracking and mining industries.

I just bought 100 acres of red soil at Koonorigan. I want to build a dam half way down the hill, but I'm worried it will leak. Is it always best to use bentonite clay when building dams on red soil?

Do the soil test to know whether you reach the 40% clay mark. If so you can use it as is.
