This one was a pure fluke. I just gave it a bash as although it is way up in the hills it was a nice flat piece of land at the end of a road, near the river with a footpath along it. Seemed like a decent bet for a few bits and bobs but I never expected the coin apocalypse which was to follow. I much prefer finding things where they are unexpected. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.

I have done a video on equipment (see related videos or detecting playlist) but as far as the detector goes if I was starting again I wouldn't look at anything less advanced than the Garrett Euroace. It is an excellent machine with quick signal recovery, good depth and accurate discrimination. Has a very good pinpoint mode too. I'm sure there are other machines about but I know this to be very good at £279 or used around £200.

The old coins trully are monsters. The 'cartwheel penny' of George III is a full ounce of copper and the cartwheel twopenny is two onces. Can't miss those with a detector!
@pondguru12 жыл бұрын
It is called a probe / pinpointer.It helps to locate the target with greater accuracy than a coil on the detector.

I think in this video I was using the preset 'relics' program but I can't remember for sure. The best one I've found so far is the 'roman site' pattern which can be downloaded from the minelab website. It seems to go deep and have great audio - I ignore all deep tones. I always use that one now and it gets better results. The 18" x 15" coil helps with depth and I run sensitivity as high as I can - getting deeper with every dig now.

It is a decent detector but I would personally spend a little more and go for the Euroace, also from Garrett as it has a much better screen and a DD coil as opposed to concentric coil so it gets extra sensitivity at depth which is very important.

I normally use a soft brass brush (bit like a toothbrush) to remove the tarnish on silver coins then rub them with a cloth and 'silvo' to prolong the shine. Copper coins I normally don't bother as I tend to destroy them. I haven't found a reliable way to clean copper ones yet.

To clean pennies and copper coins here in the US I use Hydrogen Peroxide, heated in a microwave about 1-2 minutes and then drop coins into that solution. You could also heat the solution and pour into a shallow pan or dish so you can watch the action as the surface crud is lifted away from the coin. Works best if you allow each coin to be worked on front and rear facing up.

I totally forgot about this video - it was in the days before I had a tripod and also before I realised that when talking into the camera I needed to look at the lens, not the viewing window, lol This site was a real coin holocaust and I'm really looking forward to getting into a field further down the valley which is larger and more accessible than this one. It has been used for camping, below a 17th century mill and is below a 16th century bridge but hasn't been cut for years, Went past the other day and noticed there are sheep in there so they will clear it quite quick and I should get on in next couple of weeks. Can't wait for that one as it has potential......will probably be crap, lol GL&HH

When I was doing this kind of detecting 35 years ago, you could get a Probus silver coin cleaning kit. The stuff for doing pre '47 (50%) silver was basically phosphoric acid suspended in a stiff paste which you worked into the surface with a brush. It did a good job without making the coins look polished. Once rinsed off, it was a good idea to treat with bicarbonate of soda, or the coins went blue over a few years. A near approximation is Naval Jelly rust remover, which is also phosphoric acid but in a gel. One thing to beware of is 50% silver coins go porous in acid soil, and will soak up any liquid chemicals you clean them with.
@pondguru9 жыл бұрын
I tend to not clean them unless they have black tarnish then the spit and aluminium foil rick gets that gone. Baking soda paste is indeed a good one and I've used that on occasion. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.
@freeganjustin82149 жыл бұрын
Pondguru Your 50% silver seems to survive better than what I found, probably due to being pasture finds. Mine were mainly on acid grassland and woods, which caused serious surface deposits and internal corrosion of the copper in the alloy. It took 5 years for them go a very pretty turquoise/blue colour after cleaning. I'm very much enjoying your vids because you seem to still enjoy coinshooting, which most searchers disdain once they build experience. Keep it up.
@pondguru9 жыл бұрын
freeganjustin Yes I still love coin shooting and really that is all I will be doing on true pasture in upland areas but there will be the occasional nice artefact turn up. I don't like the featureless nature of ploughed fields as it is just a question of skimming them but pasture takes a bit more thought to locate the hotspots and get the deep finds. I have a few nice sites to go at which I have never done before over the coming weeks and a couple of hunts to edit but getting time for editing is a real killer.

Hey Pondguru...any chance you could do any depth tests on small silver with the larger SEF coils? Also, do you have the 12x15 for the ETrac also? Just wondering how it compares to the 15x18 SEF?Thanks...
@pondguru9 жыл бұрын
+JC DTECT Small silver will register fine but the coil definitely needs to be going quite slow. I don't have a 15" coil but do have the ultimate 13" coil which is a very good coil - way lighter than the SEF coils. The 18" coil is so heavy that it will never be an all day coil so I tend to use it for a few hours then switch to the deus to give my arms a rest. Larger coils will definitely get extra depth and improved response on signals at depth but often at a cost of increased weight. The 13" ultimate coil is probably the best compromise.
@Diggin4LifeMetalDetecting9 жыл бұрын
Pondguru, Thanks for that well rounded prospective. I will research that ultimate. Hopefully its big enough to get down a few more inches with it not being too much bigger than the pro coil.

Hello Pondguru. Thank You for the very much for Your informative videos, very enjoyable and interesting,I am just a beginner,but could You tell Me the reason for a pin pointer when the detector is on top of the hit,and You could just pass a hand full of the earth a bit at a time over the detector head. Best wishes and thanks again.
@pondguru11 жыл бұрын
The pointer is generally used for finding targets in the hole when you're digging on pasture and going deep. In ploughed fields often the soil is soft enough to take handfuls of earth and pass it over the coil but that isn't as easy on undisturbed soil. If locating deep targets in pasture you'd have to dig a monstrous hole just to generate the loose soil for you to grab and pass over coil but the pointer allows for smaller holes and quicker location.
@maximedwards345111 жыл бұрын
Pondguru Hello again. Thank You for replying to My question,I see what You mean now about size of the hole e.t.c without the pointer. THANK YOU.

Carl John If you are in the UK this video will help give a rough idea where coin targets hit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oajQaIlpqraAhKN9t also has a link to the following video which shows how to set up the machine like I do for pasture hunting although I tend to hunt with only one line of discrimination along bottom of an otherwise open screen now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJevZ4Z9rKxrnNl6eel free to ring me any time 9-5 weekdays if you want tips or advice, no worries.The etrac will have no problem finding hammered coins in all conditions down to a decent depth but depending on how the machine is set up the responses will be different. I tend to hunt in 4 tone ferrous audio but you can simplify that to 2 tone ferrous and have it as a simple yes / no machine. Good targets will give high tone and crap will give low tone. 2 tone is very simple.

on pasture field most detectors will not get down to the depth that you need for hammed coin period say 17th century soil level unless the field has been ploughed up in the past I think if you want the hammered coins go on ploughed land mate I spent three years on pastures parks and it wasn't till they brought machines in to dig it out for lakes that I found my first hammered on land that I had detected time and time before they had took maybe 5inches off the grass so I think that you will be very lucky to find hammys on pasture that has never been turned over but the moles or rabbits foxes or badger may bring items to the top and a hoard could be a massive signal so worth doing still most of the finds I did have were Victorian Georgian and very few coins or artifacts earlier than 1650s and most quite large even with the top of the range machine you will have to hunt for the faint targets its very difficult good luck :)
@pondguru9 жыл бұрын
I've had a few hammered off pasture but it's much more likely to find them on land which has been turned over. Sure around 80% of recorded PAS finds come from ploughed land so that kind of proves the point, lol
