This video showcases a combination of filters which is strangely very underused for filtering ponds - however the pressure filter offering UV and mechanical filtration followed by a shower filter offering vast capacity for biological filtration is an excellent way to ensure low maintenance, highly effective filtration.
Even a cheap pressure filter and a DIY shower filter will do a great job of cleaning water and as a pressure filter takes care of the mechanical filtration it allows the full shower to be filled with suitable media (and has almost zero maintenance).

At nearly £1500 for the setup and media for the shower, I think I would invest a little bit more and opt for a drum filter, but each to their own
@pondguru

Martyn Koi this is a particularly expensive pressure filter and shower filter but this video is more about introducing the concept of marrying a pressure filter to a shower. I mention that you could make a DIY filter and use a different pressure filter a couple of times in video as there are numerous options. Drums are awesome and clean the water mechanically better than anything else out there for sure.

I can't promise that there won't be any more bushcraft / fishing videos as I just make videos about anything which I'm involved with which will have educational content (as I get most satisfaction from any video with useful information in) but the filter series for aquariums will keep me busy for a very long time. I already have another 7 or 8 shot which need editing plus another 3 filters have arrived in the last few days to make videos on. I love making the aquatic videos since they directly help fish all over the world.

Great video Richard. On the UV light maybe the company thinks that the cleaner the water better light penetration compare to the dirty water coming straight from the pond. Looking forward to seeing the setting up of the rest of the filter for the pond. Thanks Richard for sharing.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Yes that is probably behind their thinking since a light after the foams will probably not get the quartz sleeve around the light dirty so quickly. When the quartz sleeve gets dirty it reduces the amount of light which shines out, making the light less effective. Whichever way round it is it will work fine for this application.

The local Koi pool in the local Japanese garden uses a couple of filter beds about 4x8' filled with Monterey sands- really its a smooth gravel not sand. From what I can tell,it is up to the job if there are not too many fish in the pond. I doubt its as capable as some twin 5 High pressure sand filters...but this is what they went for. Another uses some kind of pressure filter and that water is crystal clear. That would be the San Mateo Japanse garden..and its STUFFED with big Koi.

Hi Richard, I've watched a few of your videos and really enjoy them. I found you when I was looking to build a raised pond and used tips from one of yours to build it. It's not quite complete yet but the water is in. The only problem is that I've hit a bit of a snag with the pumping arrangement because my pond isn't for Koi but for my ducks and geese. It's only small at around 1000L, if I've done my sums right, (4' x 4' x max 22" deep) so it gets mucky quickly. My original idea was to have a pump at the deepest point which would push the water up and out of the pond to a filter inlet above the water line because the water level will rise and fall depending on rain & how much the birds splash about. At the time a bottom drain and gravity feed system wasn't even on my radar and someone with ducks and a small setup has advised that the pumps get clogged and break down quickly, possibly because of the feathers. I've watched this video and the mega filter build video and can see that you are pumping up and out of a massive pond which is mucky(ish) and presumably has leaves & feathers together with the lumps of fish poo. I appreciate that leaves will chop up easier in the impeller than feathers would and the ratio of feathers to water volume in your pond is a lot less. Could you give me any advice on pumps that might help me out of my dilemma, please?

The pump I used in this video has performed very well and the link to it is in video description. Other pumps which perform very well on solids up to 10mm are the Aquamax range from Oase. Never had one of those block yet.

As there is a pressure filter before the shower filter that should prevent blockage but with the previous set up when I only had a shower filter the pipe did get clogged from time to time. Running a brush along the pipe cleared blockages in seconds no problem.

I purchased the pump and filter on your recommendation as we used to have a 35 metre by 15 metre swimming pond! but the 45 gold fish was in too small a pond so now they have the larger pond. I used the existing pressure filter and pump to clean the water but it was not strong enough. Fitted the new pump today (July 6th) which is excellent but I struggled with connecting the pipes to the filter the rebranded Green Reset are complete rubbish such a bad design, I just hope it cleans the water otherwise over £500 wasted! No worries, man - I'm on building the large filter system for the pond half an hour or so a day and I just need a few more fittings for it. Only the frames for all the filter parts are built so far but they are just tacked together with screws. They all need extra support and nails / bolts to hold them together as a couple of the platforms will be holding over 3 ton each and I don't want them breaking, lol There will be 3 x large vortex bays followed by a 1500 litre tank full of brushed or flocor dropping down into a 1500 litre moving bed followed by 2 x 1500 litre tubs filled with alfagrog in large trays and the last tank will feed water to a 1000 litre tub filled with grog which also feeds up the a 4 tray shower filter filled with biohome and pumice which will be powered by a separate pump. None of those parts are fitted together yet and that will take ages since every one will have a bottom drain for cleaning...it will probably be done in a couple of months at this rate, lol

I want to put my 2 cents in it ! Though I can't cause you explain it so well and with details only the real dummy who ask a question instead of re watching it to totally understand it cause with names technics and things you are using what possible can ask if you have any knowledge right ? Even with your accent was 101% clear. It makes me want to go out right now get my big 500 liter barrel and put a pump on it and get some balcony planters in home depot (1.99$ each or something like that) drill a few holes fill it up with medium and just watch as clean filtered water enters the pond and thinking what would be the best way to clean it and how often ...... but that is an other project. PS: There will be some dummies who still ask stupid questions but yes some like where you get this or that and where to by what is the site who don't want to do a little search. Well that's an expensive pump failure. Ouch . It must take a lot of power to filter a pond that size. Now I can't say as I have ever touched a filter that made me think how good it felt lol That is a BEAST of a filter !! your installing. Also a nice little water fall. I like the sound of the water fall. I would like a pond here but it would be frozen to the bottom 7 months a year. The ice on the river freezes at least 40 inches thick each winter and it's moving.. Thats a very similar set up to my APS 20k pressure filter , the handle turning on mine is easy , a dab of superglue stops it flying off .

Yes having any pressure filter before the main biological filter is a great idea. I almost went for one similar to the APS filter but thought I'd give something a go which was a bit bigger - seems to be working OK so far as only very fine muck is coming through. I just added a fine pad in the top of the shower to see how much muck was still coming through and it does have some fine muck in it already.

@pondguru I have been using a smaller version of your filter for the past 2 years here in the U.S.. The only difference is instead of a pump (up and down) handle mine has a crank (turning) handle also mine has a small void of space in the bottom for your choice of biomedia... I use white pumice (thanks to your advice on media once before). I picked a pump AND filter that were double what my pond was and my water stays crystal clean now with not additives. But I have to ask??? Being in the U.K. and aware of natural swimming pools I am sure, Why have you not done something like that for your pond to get it to clear up? Thanks for your shows!
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoy the videos - thanks for watching. The shape of the pond does not lend itself to a natural swimming pool design as it is basically a huge basin. If it was drained down to around half depth I could probably install walls around an edge , backfill with pipes in gravel and make a natural pool filter but the external large filter (yet to be built) will be way more convenient - just need some spare time to build it now.

I have just put a pond in and have a pump and pressure filter but was wondering this same thing as I think I would need some more biological filtering going on. I was looking at either a waterfall filter (DIY) and just shoving some media in there or a shower filter (DIY) against a wall, pump feeding that and the pipe coming from that running the waterfall. Obviously this is more difficult as it has to be higher than the pond somewhere up the bank. Is this about right as the pressure filter seems more mechanical than bio? cheers. Great stuff BTW

I was wondering would pond filter media like sponges be good for a sump drip plate filter?
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
They will be good to mechanically clean the water but offer little in the way of good environment for bacterial colonisation. As long as you have good media under the foams the filter will support a good amount of bacteria to ensure processing of ammonia and nitrite. Very few types of media will allow for anaerobic activity for nitrate reduction but it is perfectly achievable with the various forms of biohome - I'm assuming that you have a marine tank so biohome ultimate marine would be the one to go for at a rate of approx. 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres. That is the average amount of media needed for a full cycle in a marine system.

I’m unsure what outcome you’re looking for, however if it is clear water you need to up your filter by 10 times, what you’re doing isn’t going to have much impact on such a large pool, which is lovely by the way. Also question how you are going to clean the media in the tub which is sat up high under the deck? The most efficient way for a pool of that size would be a reed bed system via a long stream with drop in pools allowing plants to take the nitrates away. Good luck, I’ll watch with interest.

I did a similar filter system 25 years ago, bottom drains in each chamber 4x2x2 (pool is a lot smaller than yours 7k gallons) brushes got removed as I couldn’t keep up with the cleaning, they were in the second chamber, the first was a settlement chamber, then in to K1 and 2 following lava rock chambers, adding the baskets is a good move as these were a pain to clean, then pumped into a 70w UV, will also add this was gravity fed, 4” bottom and 2” skimmer. If you have plenty of spare time to clean the filters that will make a difference, daily cleaning will have an impact.
@pondguru
@pondguru 5 жыл бұрын
Great stuff, that sounds almost exactly the same as my set up. The vortex filters should hopefully catch the main muck but the bush chamber may get the rest. With the amount of water I can drop into containers for cleaning I reckon they will get a quick but effective clean whenever they need one but it will be trial and error to know how long the intervals between cleaning should be.

@pondguru I feel like the green reset 100 would work well if you discarded the sponges and filled 1/2 or 3/4 of the filter with k1 media as it would move around well internally. Or keep the sponges and fill k1 in the gaps around the sponges in the cylinder.

It should be OK and when you connect it up the right way it may spit out whatever muck it has currently trapped on the inside of the foams as opposed to the outside of the foams. Having it going the wrong way for only a day won't have damaged or clogged anything so nothing to worry about.

What type of filter system would you recommend for a 2000 gallon koi pond and dose not cost thousands
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming that you are in the UK? I'm not too familiar with what is available in other countries. If you are looking for a similar idea to this then there are a nation of pressure filters available now which would act as the first stage of filtration and then you could build a shower filter from suitable containers and minimal fittings very easily (I have a few videos showing how shower filters can be made on my channel). That will allow you to spend the money where it really matters which is on the filter media - if the shower filter is big enough to get a good amount of 30mm-50mm white pumice in (maybe around 100kg) then that will do a great job of hammering away at ammonia and nitrite, any more in the filter and you'll stand a chance of reducing the nitrates too depending on stock. If you're on a budget then any of the biohome media is probably out but we have a shower media which is very good and can be added later as funds allow - it packs into a filter extremely well. The pressure filter would ideally be for 'up to 20000 litres' or more as that would have a suitable sized UV light in - pressure filters often aren't capable of doing a good 'water health' job by themselves, especially when koi is the stock but they do a great job of the UV and mechanical side of filtration. Feel free to ring me any time on 07772848730 Regards, Richard

That is 2180 GALLONS not litres! With those dimensions it would be 9910 LITRES! Ideally you should be looking to pass your water through your filter every 1-3 hours, so look for a pump with a max flow rate of pond volume to a third of your pond volume!

@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
It will still work under those conditions but any media will definitely be more effective in a filter of some sort. If you have a suitably sized canister filter which is well set up you should achieve full cycle in there and have no need for any more media in the tank, especially if the tank is well planted since the plants will help to reduce nitrate.

so no real benefit from boihome inside tank i thought bacteria in tank could keep more balance since it would be extension to the one in filter so when filter gets clean i have bacteria from tank water ready but its just idea

Cleaning media just involves giving the filter tray a shake in a bucket of water you have drained from the tank so that doesn't do anything to kill off bacteria.

@ces69
@ces69 Жыл бұрын
A Bakki shower is not a trickle filter with a low flow rate, to work they must run at high turnover rates to replicate the flow crashing over rocks as they do in real streams and also at least 4 tiers tall and I would also suggest that a 12000 pump is too small for that sized shower! It would need to be closer to 20000 at least to function as intended but the results would be significantly better, with a “gassing off” effect!

It sounds like you need some sort of surface skimmer and there are 3 choices as far as designs go: 1 - built in skimmer where you would break out part of the pond side and fit the skimmer. 2 - free standing skimmer which would attach to the inlet of the pump if possible. 3 - free swimming skimmer which would travel around the pond and remove anything which is drawn into the basket. If you search those terms for different skimmers on google you will find a nation of them but as I'm not familiar with the products available in the US or the design of the pond I can't recommend a specific design. Regards, Richard

ever thought about not having the pump touching the very bottom of the pond where it will just suck all the crap up, should do it so its a couple of feet above the the bottom so its only cycling water and not crap off the bottom, (this is what i do in my very small pond but only have it a few inches)
@pondguru

I'll see how much muck is pumped from the pond and if it is excessive I may suspend the pump from the large platform so it is up off the ground. When I make the big filter for the pond I will now be using a different pump as that one will be to remove as much muck from the water as possible. Luckily I have a solids handling 16000 lph pump spare which will now run the big filter.
@ice1824
@ice1824 6 жыл бұрын
have a waterproof rot proof rope go across the pond so you can lower and raise the pump and have plenty spare, have a separate rope attached to the pump so you can pull it to shore, weight the bottom of the pump and let gravity take it to the center of the pond and lower it, once it reaches the bottom pull it back up by 3 - 4 feet of rope and tie it off, hope you get the general idea, best of luck

The same system would 'work' but there probably wouldn't be a noticeable difference in water clarity due to the size of the pond compared to the filter system as you'd probably still have a couple of hundred thousand litres if the pond had the same area but was only 1m deep. The system in this video was set up to help out with the (larger) filtration system and demonstrate what can be done for ponds with regard to pressure and shower filters. The large filter system is currently under construction and that one is designed to clear the water (or attempt to clear the water) and also increase the health of the water in this large pond.
