Third episode in this mega-filter build for my large trout pond. Today we will take a look at the brush chamber of the filter and I'll explain how the water will flow through the chamber to help with settlement which will hopefully clear the pond. The next episode will highlight the moving bed chamber and have detailed information on the various types of moving bed filter media available. *When using side pressure to cut a hole with a drill bit use safety glasses since a broken drill bit is a sharp object which can damage eyes. I haven't been anywhere - that's the problem, lol Last month I had the equivalent orders of 3 months when I had the shop so I was stupidly busy and it's not letting up this month either. We're waiting of a large industrial drier being built for the filter media manufacturing plant which should really increase production then I will make the trade site live which will hopefully take some pressure off me if people can buy the media at various other sources in the UK. I can't make the site live until the drier is installed since we couldn't cope with an increase in orders at the present time.....it is mad.
@simplifygardening6 жыл бұрын
@@pondguru Thats great news though mate. Much better to be run off your feet and have the orders coming than not have them at all. When is the drier due? When the trade site goes live that dhould streamline everything for you and free you up a little

I work HVAC and have experienced rot in even pressure treated deck material from the moisture coming off a condenser unit with 6-8’ of clearance over the condenser fan. Big reason not to put a heat pump under a deck. You will have a lot of splash and evaporation adding moisture content to your decking pillars and planks. Might take a couple years but the rot may be problematic. Do you have a plan to combat or prevent this? I imagine reframing a deck or replacement of a pillar once all the filter equipment is operational and permanently affixed would be problematic.
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
There is pond liner above this filter project and that sits a good 9" underneath the deck above so that prevents moisture getting up. Sides of the filter area will have trellis on to allow good air flow through it so condensation should not be an issue. The ground under the filter has perforated field drains covered in 20mm gravel as that was originally meant to be the (ground level) site for the cabin before I decided to have it raised up.

My advice when doing that is if you're going to use a drill with side-pressure, be careful and take your time. Drill bits and chucks aren't necessarily designed for side pressure, but in soft material like plastics, it should be okay. Always good to wear gloves and safety glasses!
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
That is a good tip and I should have mentioned that. The container plastic is quite soft so the drill cuts through it reasonably easier but I wouldn't want to see someone try this with a drill bit which snapped and ended up in their eye. I'll add a note to the video description and shoot an extra part for the next episode as a warning at the start. Groovy.

Being pump Fed I would consider a 4 inch bypass at the very top of the container. Just in case, you never know.
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
I had considered that but the system is under cover so will get no leaves or any other detritus finding its way into the containers. If the worst did happen it would take a good while to drain the pond so the fish will be safe, lol

Hi mate, where did you get the brush chamber from?

I can hardly wait until you show the pump. Its got to be a monster. I've seen them at a local store that only does Koi ponds..as I perused the plants outdoors,I went inside to see some huge commercial grade pumps. I wonder if they are low energy use like many magnetic drive pumps are compared to olden days direct drive pumps. Well,I know my idea of buying bales worth of poly filter and filling one of those huge containers with it...or in milkcrates of it stacked might not be practical,but might work. How you clean it..is for you to figure out-lol. Also the barley bales in the pond..no use to your needs? Some swear it takes care of green water.
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping that the first stages of this filter will handle the mechanical parts of filtration but if they don't then the latter stages will have static alfagrog which works great in muck. The pump I'm considering is 30,000 lph and is 380w so is very low power consumption for the output it generates.

If I'm going to let a canister filter sit for days or weeks unused. How should I do that? Should I leave the water in it? Should I clean it? Thanks
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
Best to empty it and clean it out - if water is left stagnant in there it will go rotten quite quickly. If you want media to still be OK then it would be put in mesh bags inside the aquarium to keep bacteria alive.

Really looking forward to the next part! Do you have any idea when we'll get to see it? I'm pimping my sump this weekend, couldn't afford the biohome 😢 so went with alphagrog. 2 sacks arrived.... Far too much! I'll just have to get more tanks I guess! Haha
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
Alfagrog is a decent media in the right situation and I'll be using lots in the static parts of this filter since I had pallet of 66 bags delivered last week - hope to add that in today as I've been running the filter to test for leaks. If you went for the E25 size and it is packed in tight in a sump it may create anaerobic conditions in small areas for some nitrate reduction. I think I have the next part edited but I can't remember - if I have then I'll upload it today.
@markmmm17376 жыл бұрын
I see the 5 outlets, however how do you plan on getting an even flow around the brushes to the outlets. I fear the water path will follow the outer edge of the container straight to the outlets. Also the bottom drain may have difficulty reaching the far edge to clear the muck out. Maybe a small "H" shaped diffuser piping in the bottom. I hope I'm helping.
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you saw the last video but I have built a pipe into the feed which will supply a really heavy flow of water for swilling down the containers for cleaning so muck flow through the drain will not be an issue. Water in brush chamber is fired down to bottom by the 4" pipe and it rises up through brushes evenly so there will be no area where water level will be higher than other area in the container. The outlets may not be perfectly level but water flow will be heavy so should easily go through all 5 outlets. If I have got it really wrong I can simply add a 90 degree bend on the inside of the outlet to level water flow through them. I should really mention that in a future episode so thanks for bringing it up.

Been a long wait for part 3 but worth the wait just a quick question when you changed the screws to the tank connector for longer ones was they stainless screws👍👍
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
They were galvanized as I didn't have any stainless screws - first choice would have been stainless for water use.
@simonhedderwick45166 жыл бұрын
Awesome as always :) Just a thought but with those 4" legs are you not going to get water left inside once you drain it down? I built a similar thing on a much smaller level for my marine tank sump and cut out small sections at bottom of the pipe legs so the water could flow out. Keep up the great videos :)
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
I may get a tiny bit of water held in the legs but it will amount to very little and on the scale of things it's something I never thought about but I could see why you had holes in for a sump scenario - nice one.

Loving this little series I always planed on diving another pond and joining them with a small stream the fish could use to access both sides but funds ran dry so now I have a great big filter box just sitting there but after watching these I'm thinking maybe set it up with brushes to get the majority of crap as my pond is quite robust on the stocking side of things lol and that should surely cut down on cleaning of the filter pads as sometimes they can clog up pretty quickly so thanx for the insparaition now to find the time dam kids 🤣🤣🤣 tnx Jon ✌
@pondguru6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like decent plan there as anything to settle muck you can add to the system will definitely help to save the filter with finer foams.
