Everyone here is saying that Emil wasn't playing "defensive enough" for a defender, but I disagree. In the first few matches the guy wouldn't loop his chops... he'd just push and then loop Emil's push, not giving Emil a chance to throw in any super spinny or deceptive dead chops, which is really a defenders game. Emil then switched to more aggressive offence and came back from 0-2. I'm a defender and when my opponent is playing more passive than *me*, I'm switching to full offense and taking control of the match. Being a successful defender doesn't mean always chopping no matter what. It's about having more tools in your belt than the opponent and knowing how to use them accordingly.
@blueheart98733 жыл бұрын
A lot of defenders struggle against players that are more passive then them. Whenever someone uses long pips, I just keep doing long pushes because they won't attack anyway. And of course whenever the oppurtunity is there I smash the ball
@PongfinityPlus3 жыл бұрын
This is very true, defenders really have to adapt to the opponent's playing style. In this match, after loosing the first two games, I was thinking that I'm giving too easy balls with my LP and he didn't have any difficulties with the chops, so I decided not to use my LP almost at all during the rest of the match and went for more offensive style with the forehand. That felt like the only possibility to get back to the match.

As a player that changed from offensive to defensive style I'm very interested in Emils progress. With that forehand he could become a great modern defensive player. Also saw some fast twiddling which is a nice surprise for the opponent. As have been pointed out in other comments the pimples wasn't much use this match. I think one of the issues in the first sets when using the pips was that the push stroke is too short and similar to how most people push with inverted. I've found that you need a longer stroke when pushing with pimples, like a mini chop. Then you also get more depth and speed on the push which often gives you a popup push in return that can be attacked. A thicker sponge or higher friction pimples could also help avoid the pop ups when pushing against push or no spin.

As an offensive player, I probably underestimate the difficulty of being an effective defender. In this game it felt like all of Emil's pimple balls were easy points for the opponent and ended up completely avoiding the pimples and playing with 1 rubber. You handicapped yourself heavily and still won, what a beast.... If you are having fun with the pimples though then keep at it and I am sure you will make it work!

Something I wish more people knew is how to deal with backspin with lp, since pushing just gives the opponent a slow no spin/top spin ball for an easy attack. Contrary to popular belief, long pips have a wide aggressive arsenal too, which work great against backspin balls. Sideswiping and push-hitting are more aggressive options that really let you take control of the game, would highly recommend you to utilise them more.
@kimmy53793 жыл бұрын
Well played Emil, the only thing I can criticize is that when you play backhand you reach for the ball instead of waiting in the ball to really push the ball forward. You could move a bit more to the table when using you longpimps (if you use longpimps) to take it early and make it lower. But to be honest, you still had great foot work. Congrats for the win, hope to see you compete more!
@bigben36833 жыл бұрын
Great mental toughness from the chopping champion! Nice work Emil!
@Nive-wt7xu3 жыл бұрын
What a fight! Great mentality coming back from 0:2, saving match points, playing risky and strong shots in crucial moments. Well done Emil! Some things to improve on in my opinion (some things have already been said in the comments tho): - unnecessary twiddling. You don't seem go play killshots or anything with the backhand anyway - it looks like you just try to get the ball on the table with the grippy sponge. You're neither gonna improve your pimple play that way, nor do you really force your opponent into mistakes. If anything, it gives the opponent the opportunity to play a confident winner. - footwork! Plenty of forehand errors because you didn't move to the ball well/quickly enough (specifically when the opponent plays into your FH side) - similar, but not the same: positioning. You get caught on your elbow too often, which forces you into playing an awkward shot. Either commit to playing pimples and position yourself a little further to the right, or try to play forehand 60-70% of the table - then you need to be further left

curious of what type of rubber you use? I think you would prefer more close to the table push/block/swipe LP. Your playstyle is very versatile already as it is and you switch between LP and normal offensive on backhand.
@o3523 Жыл бұрын
This video is more than a year old but I’m still gonna comment anyway. Emil won this match because he started mostly using his normal rubber instead of the pimples. During the 3 sets that he won he was basically playing with just one rubber. Which is understandable, since he’s been using normal rubbers for most of his life and it’s more comfortable for him but it’s not the way he’s gonna get the best results. Yeah maybe be won this match but he is not going to improve as a defender. Either play with 2 normal rubbers and play your best for results or stick with the pimples and really try to use them and learn, make mistakes. He probably would have lost the match that way but it really doesn’t matter, no one improves without losing first and learning what works and what doesn’t. It’s very unlikely that one just wins all of their early matches after switching to material, especially on this level. I hope Emil is still doing this experiment since I love watching defenders play. I’d just advise him to turn the twiddling a little down since it looked like he was just confusing himself and making unforced errors because of it. Focus on defending first, work on your footwork and once you are able to really defend against good attackers, start twiddling and attacking with the backhand, if they give you the chance. But don’t twiddle after every shot!
