Sala forest fire was the largest forest fire in modern times in sweden. This harvester had nothing to do with the fire but a scarifier who started it. 1245 hectare (12450000 square meters) burned down!
Sign saying: My last days as a harvester
On July 11, 2014, I got a much needed break from my otherwise stressful harvester life. I was placed on the side of Rökelsevägen, behind a small mountain knoll and under some pine trees that provided nice shade in the hot weather. My drivers also took time off.
It smells like smoke!
After a period of vacation, more precisely on July 31 in the middle of the day, I smelled smoke but didn't think much of it and continued my pleasant existence.
In the evening the smell of smoke increased and it became really nasty. Maybe there was a fire in the forest. Later I learned that my drivers knew this
at the time thought of moving because there was a risk of the fire spreading to my quiet place. It is said that the fire chief who took over in the afternoon thought that I did not need to be moved, the whole of Lake Öjesjön was between me and the fire.
On Friday, August 1, the smell of smoke was still there. Luckily I wasn't working and had to inhale the fumes. An occasional car passed on Rökelsevägen, but I didn't think too much about it.
I'm starting to burn
During Saturday, August 2, the situation became really difficult. The fire could not be stopped and it was burning all around me. The extinguishing work was chaotic and they needed my help. I was still at full strength and wanted to help.
I heard that my driver was on his way to pick me up, but was stopped by the now more or less galloping fire. I was trapped and the heat increased, my tires and tubes started to glow. I was starting to burn. Sometimes I could hear helicopters flying over me, and then I thought that soon I'll have a cold shower and I'll be fine.
But it only got worse. The heat was soon unbearable and everything combustible was taken by the flames. Diesel and hydraulic oil vaporized and burned so fiercely that my aluminum heart melted, spilled onto the ground, and solidified into an indefinable lump of metal.
On Sunday, August 3, they found me and the only thing left was my steel. skeleton.
I will now stand here until the ravages of time have broken me down into atoms and molecules of the elements of which I am composed, and then enter the eternal cycle.
