Pontefract Liquorice: Pomfret Cakes & Liquorice Festival

Although liquorice is no longer grown in Pontefract - the sweets are still made here. We meet with Tom Dixon who's family had the last commercial liquorice farm in the town. He tells presenter, Geoff Druett, how the plant came to grow here and its commercial usages (besides sweets it's also use in medicine). The film ends with a visit to the annual Pontefract Liquorice Festival.

I’m trying Pontefract Cakes for the first time so I thought I should get some insight on the topic. They are very good! Is a strong tradition licorice and these ones have a soft chew to them. Thanks for the video!

When I was a small boy about 5 years old, I remember going to a fair in Nottingham in the early 1960's and having an actual liquorice root to chew on ....

Pontefract is part of the liquorice triangle in the Wakefield disrict and where they make Pontefract (Ponty) cakes at Harribo Dunn Hills about 2 miles from my house and we also have the tangarine factory what makes Butterkist popcorn aswell as other things and when i drive past them it smells amazing
