Engine builder could've been a youngster and his dad in the garage with some scrap parts laying around. With enough knowledge to put it together, but not a professional. Just sharing time together. Could've been a guys 1st motor build. Just getting it going for cheap. Or buddy's got together having some beers and QC went away. If your here, we all remember when a set of running wheels made you feel like a king. The good ol'days.

Heck yeah good ol days. This car didn’t run bad so it clearly worked as it was just smoked a little.

Hi John, the differences between 69 water pumps is that early 69 Pontiac water pumps were a 4 inch hub and halfway through the year they changed it to a 4 1/2 inch hub. that’s how you know if you have an early 69 motor, so if you put your water pump on table and measure from the bottom of the water pump to the end of the snout you’ll have four or 4 1/2 inches. And all your pullies will be different between the two water pumps too. Love your show.

Can’t believe it had the nylon timing gears, never know what you got till you know, hate the engine was bad
@VinylVillageGarage2 жыл бұрын
The nylon i haven’t seen in years, it was a surprise for sure. my original Engine budget was just enough to cover a valve job and rering boy was I way off on this one. I have a few things in the works.

Great video, I’m not an engine guy, but you gave me some interesting things to look for when I search for an engine for my 67. Thanks.

Very welcome friend. Core shift is not common, actually in all my years playing cars this was the first one I found.

THE 350 Pontiac can support large vane heads like #12 from the GTO or aftermarket heads as long as the valve lift doesn't go over .450".
@VinylVillageGarage5 ай бұрын
The 1969 350 HO used 48s and that boosts the 350 rating just below a standard 400

e Extra space , nice . Can we get a video about the mini-rotisserie that unibody rode out on ? Great work !

Oh the car flipper thingy. I made that for my convertible resto for a one time use but it’s been on three cars and counting. 🤷♂️ I have low ceilings but in my Garage so a typical rotisserie would not fit well. I will include some info on it soon a video. Thanks

Hello buddy it's time for a pontiac 400 engine under the hood 😉 can believe me you are doing a fantastic job on saving my favorite birds and that is First generation firebirds

Yeah a surprise for me for sure, the engine budget was limited Because I felt it was a decent because it did run ok. Oh well win some and you loose some.

enjoyed watching this again with sound fixed. All of the 1965 - 1970s pontiacs I've worked on have the durabond nylon timing chain and I find the shredded nylon in the oil pan. The distributor bearings are usually worn as well and spark is very scattery. I always replaced with Mallor dual point or HEI distributor and MSD coil. We're house hunting now and I'm hoping to buy a gto or firebird in 6 months and start my own resto! If you come across a nice 68-69 bird that doesn't have a lot of rust and want to sell, let me know.

LS 6.2 or a 400/455. The reliability; and for some reason disproportionate resale value, would be a ls. Better yet would be a OHC. Tough to find tho.
@VinylVillageGarage2 жыл бұрын
6.2 would be a wild ride and very reliable, 400 is a great touch but a bit spendy. I have always wanted a ohc sprint for some crazy reason. they where so different and advanced for their time. I will see what turns up and stays under budget.
@w41duvernay5 ай бұрын
Don like that ls suggestion, the OHC6 isn't a bad idea. Hard to find those Sprint 6 motors.

Hey Jonathan love the channel and all the knowledge. I just watched this vid and went looking for part 2. I don't see part 2, but I do see you putting in another engine. Did you junk the 350?
@VinylVillageGarage Жыл бұрын
I did get a different engine for the car. I still have the block with crank and pistons, I did scrap the rest. Limited space kind of thing

It was definitely a new adventure finding this much wrong. I am looking for a nice 350 Or possibly a 400 depending on price. Gotta keep this thing on budget. Pontiac engines are not know for being cheap
@jamesforehan28092 жыл бұрын
So somewhere out there is the original car that this engine was in. Can you post information in such away that the present owner of original matching car could connect with the engine. It would be the most value to that unknown person.

not a bad idea I will see about posting the vin on the next video soon
@kenny32172 жыл бұрын
Might be worth fighting for even for a 350 if it was the original engine and trans but if it were my project at this point i would just drop an LS and 6 speed in it.

Great Video. Hopefully you can reuse the block, it is very interesting whats going on with those pistons. I have personally seen a engine that had issues running, that had just been "rebuild". It was missing all the rings down one side. Its always a shot in the dark if people have been into things before you. It will be interesting to see what you can find if you cant rebuild this one.
@VinylVillageGarage2 жыл бұрын
This wasn’t what I thought was going to happen. I was hopeful for a simple ring and hone job with new seals, boy I was way off on this one.
@darbikrash12 жыл бұрын
Great video as always. Not sure the forward piston notch is that important, the valve reliefs appear symmetrical so I'm not sure it matters. I don't think there is usually piston pin offset on the aftermarket pistons - so no real advantage to forward facing notch other than good practice? The real issue is the connecting rod orientation, the chamfer on the rod journal must be oriented to face the radius on the crank journal- these are definitely not symmetrical and if not oriented the rod will rub on the crank radius with the result of lots of metal in the oil. Often, when rebuild shops press the pistons on the rods, they don't pay attention to the piston notch relationship to the rod chamfer, then they *correct * this by switching the assembled rod/piston into the hole that allows the rod chamfer to face the crank, which then means the notch is no longer facing forward. Probably what happened here.
@VinylVillageGarage2 жыл бұрын
I am with you on this. Lack of attention to detail was the issue here. Unfortunately the amount of metal in the pan makes me wonder if they installed the rods chamfer out and it did it’s own clearance/machining. Plus the core shift issues it’s time to move on.
@wmorri0032 жыл бұрын

Somebody's been screwin around in their son! ha ha ha ha ----- WOW ! they never worked on a Pontiac I guess. Yeah, you need another 350 or 389 or 400. Lately, these used Pontiac motors have been out of sight price wise. Maybe just buy a Jasper rebuild? I am down to just 3, and there all big money motors. Numbers matching 400 for my 68 Convert, 1970 Ram Air III and the beast , Ram Air VI with all the good stuff. Don't be scared of a nice running 389 if you find one cheap. True they don't have the 2.11 /1.77 valves but if you find a 64 to 66 GTO motor they run better then any 350 !.
@VinylVillageGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the guts of this engine threw me for a loop for sure never seen one with this much wrong and still ran relatively well 🤷♂️. I was hoping for a hone and ring job rebuild. Oh well. See what turns up.
