This is a great video. I used it on a 2000 Alero. I could not find a new or used p/s pump with EVO sensor. I bought a pump for $40 and rebuilt it with my reservoir and clips and sensor connected to the with high pressure inlet hole. I did not know but it does spin off the old pump. You need to take the sensor off first with a C pliers and snap ring pliers and after, put it in a large vice to hold and loosen the high pressure hose inlet. Change all the O rings in the new pump then put it all back together. This would be a good video to make. Many people ask about this procedure on the internet. Pulling and putting on the pulley is easy with the borrowed rental tools. Blow out your lines! There is a tremendous amount of sludge in them and it is not hard to do but very messy. Take precautions and don't lose the nipple which is in the low pressure inlet hose or on the reservoir nipple. Thanks for the help!

My 2000 Olds Alero (2.4) power steering pump itself is fine, but the reservoir that holds the power steering fluid is broken & needs to be replaced. Just changed a buddies today and the new pump didn't have the electronic plug on it and the high pressure input was on the bottom of the pump. I think someone replaced the engine before he got it. He says it's a 1999 but I think the motor is either newer or older.

if the pump has the variable pressure switch you have to adapt it to the new pump unless you ordered one without it

The old one had that switch but what autozone showed us and gave us for 1999 grand am 3.4 didn't match at all. The high pressure input is on the bottom and now he needs a new line bcuz the bend and angle of the metal isn't right.

Followed your vid, it's pretty good. However I noticed you did not mention a small metal restrictor that goes into the low pressure return line. it is clearly visible on the unit you take out as it was left in the nipple of the old pump. I did not see it in the new pump when you put it on. (You forgot it?) It was just chance I saw this part on my 3.1 Malibu as it dropped onto the top of my engine..

I would think the high air pressure evacuation of the fluid is not such a good idea and could potentially blow out one or more of the multiple seals in the system, i would skip this step and properly bleed the system if fully replacing the power steering fluid.

Hello Joe why did you change the power steering in the beginning ,i have this issue with the noise problem is it cause of the cold weather that is causing this problem today it is -35 outside with the wind chill, or is it that there is Air in my lines of the power steering i removed the fluid the was in the pump and it was black, i didn't completely remove all of the oil if i give it a completely oil removal will the noise stop on my 03 grand am 3.4 liter. thanks.

Does one really have to bleed the power steering lines? There isn't much fluid in there. Wouldn't leaving the cap off of the power sterering resevoir and running the engine for about three minutes suffice?
@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 10 жыл бұрын
no air can be trapped and be harmful to the pump thats why its in the procedure ...people have done it and had luck though... just you might have jittery steering and such and it can really airate the fluid breaking it down over time faster

+Richard Sherman yeah it is basicly you unbolt the cross member from the bottom of the car to get to the rack and pinion kinda a pain, one thing to do when you bring it down is make sure you reinforce those brackets that rack and pinion bolt to. I had those break on two cars so i welded plates to them.

Newfie Led Man most likley the lights dimming is just a draw on the system (normal) its alright or a little dimming, if your alternator is not producing above 13.6 volts it could be failing but its always smart to check connections

Or is the power steering pump worn out .
@JoeTheAutoGuy
@JoeTheAutoGuy 9 жыл бұрын
Natural wear of the pump will cause the pump to whine in cold if the noise goes away it's fine , I wouldn't worry about it when it's that cold the fluid greatly thickens and can cause the noise .

Clayton Atkinson Do you have the 3400 or the 3800 the 3.4 motor you can get a small ratchet on the tensioner and move it just fine. On the 3800 little more difficult you gotta move some parts out of the way. I’d recommend getting a tensioner tool that’s more easy to use then a ratchet

Save yourselves the trouble and just buy a completed pump and pulley for like 30$.. Worth saving the hassle.

@joewilson1522
@joewilson1522 Жыл бұрын
Figured it out you need a 29-30mm socket to disconnect the fitting/sensor no need to remove any snap rings or anything
