Gotta' love a mother thumper big lift long duration cam! The sound of big valves flowing, pushing loads of air through a big cubic inch Pontiac mill is stunning. The 400's and 455's in these cars were the last real deal throwback muscle car engines from a time when each GM division had their own engine designs. If they had real modern standalone multiport fuel injection these cars would have been every bit the equal to today's LS and Hemi powered cars, never mind the Coyote powered Fords, which just don't sound the same or feel the same. Loads of torque and pull; add in deep gears say 3:73's 3:55's or 4:10's behind a 4 speed lock up automatic, or even better still a TKO 6 speed the aforementioned fuel injection, and you have a serious contender to any modern muscle car, normally aspirated anyway. With a Eaton S/C, injection, big gears and matching OD transmission, wow is all I can say. There is mothing like the sound or feel of the Pontiac mills,... 389, 400, 421, 428, 455, take your pick. Thank you for sharing this video slice of motor city muscle. It takes me back to my Sd 455 Trans Am as well as my '77, '78, and '79 400 powered Trans Am's that I owned in the early to late 80's. People say the Pontiac T/A of this era were all style no substance, or that the first Gen F body was the only real contender just don't get it. For the time, these were among the fastest if not the fastest cars being made. Certainly Pontiac and the Trans Am released the last true big cubic inch performance motors relatively intact essentially untouched from their '60s incarnations. Yes, less compression, less horsepower milder cams, choked with catalytic converters smaller single to dual exhaust, but still they managed to boast 220 NET horsepower in their final years, and 320 pound feet of torque as well, while leaving lots of untapped potential on the table. Nothing like it from any other division till the mid-late 80's Tune Port Injected Corvette 5.7 and the Buick 3.8 GN-X, without the charm and feel of the 400. If Pontiac had the technology that Buick and Chevrolet had in these later 80's integrated into the 400, I doubt either division would have been able to keep up. OF course, Corvette always had to be the fastest most powerful at least on paper, until the 3.8 Turbo cars reached maturity. To beat Corvette in this area was a death sentence in the eyes of GM management. Otherwise, the 400 could have been just as emissions friendly with the addition of computer controlled fuel injection, advanced computer designed roller cams, heads, valves, compression, custom fuel and spark maps, plus some forced induction from AIR Research Garrett, or Eaton, I honestly believe a 400 powered F-Body Pontiac would have made every other GM division offering, not to mention Mopar's Mitsu's and Fords Fox's look like they were sitting still. There was a lot the 400 could have still offered had GM not killed it in '78 ( the last '78 production 6.6 400's were sold in a few thousand 10th anniversary TA's and maybe a special order TA in '79) trading it instead for that boat anchor 6.6 Oldsmobile 403 then the 301 turbo TA or naturally aspirated 301 5.0 Pontiac, was a sad and premature end to arguably the best of the Pony cars of any generation, certainly in the style and substance areas. It was another 30 years before anything really came close to the same excitement as these offered, albeit at 4-10 times the price, made of plastic and printed carbon fiber with parts imported from everywhere but Detroit. Now they are killing off those cars so we can all be politically correct driving electric powered self-driving nanny-state bubbles with no style or substance. GM killing Pontiac and the Trans Am was the biggest mistake they ever made, what so we could be the market leader seller in China, where the Buick is the largest seller globally. And what do they offer us, Kia, Hyundai and other garbage for mass consumption. What a gyp. Give me a 400 powered 2nd gen Trans Am any day!
@davelowets2 жыл бұрын
The Pontiac couldn't and wouldn't keep up with the emissions mandates because of the lazy shitty chamber design in the heads. The Olds motor you said was junk was the last engine in America to have a carburetor, and still pass the emissions laws, because of it's more efficient combustion chamber design. So dont make shit up. 🤦🏻
