@Turd Ferguson Pontoons are fine on lakes, but if you're going out onto the ocean or out of inlets like this then a pontoon should be one of your last choices. I work on a lake and we have two of those same pontoons that we rent and those pontoons handle HORRIBLE even compared to my families personal pontoon. Sun Trackers like that one are made quite cheeply and the overall quality of the ride (and control of the boat) is poor.

I’m not sure how long that Key West CC was, but the boat club I belong to had 3 (now down to one) 21’ Key West CCs with a single Mercury 175. Not that I’ve been in anything like Haulover Inlet in one, but they handle rough water exceptionally well for a boat their size. I wasn’t at all surprised by their win.

Win or lose I think the pontoon boat can't be judged the same as the other boats since the they have no room between deck and water 12-18" maybe. I'd say that was a win compared to some that had 4' of bow to water and got wet but you need to change the "rules".

Hey BG, you need to lighten up a bit! Every boat in this vid should have taken the win. You're being silly, and very biased against everything except 70+ ft yachts. These were clearly boat victories! As somebody else posted: "You went too slow - boat loses. You went too fast - boat loses. Some water got into the boat - boat loses." Most likely reason: "Every boat we filmed wasn't two cute nubile-bodied teen chicks breaking Daddy'y boat, and we're bitter." (so are we...) Us: "C'mon man..."

These Pontoon boats and other "lake vessels" have zero business in the open ocean, even if they get lucky crossing through Haulover, the captains are completely irresponsible and ignorant, risking their lives, the lives of their passengers, and the lives of the safety/rescue crews that often have to save/salvage the left over carnage...

Chris craft driver picked the biggest waves to climb, good way of finding out how your boat copes with it and how you cope with the boat. World Cat beat Haulover like a boss. Took a run up at the last wave and as you said yourself launched it as intended then idled cuz there was no more chop. Can`t beat a cat

I don't think taking a wave over the bow on a pontoon is the same as a V shaped hull. It's already much lower a pontoon boats don't hold water, the deck is basically just a platform, so the water just washes right off the boat.

The first boat needed to be scored a loser just for the fenders/bumpers hanging over the side. The pontoon boat should also automatically lose because of the fenders/bumpers hanging over the side and the fact that it's a pontoon boat.

Cats work much better attacking a head sea on the plane at an angle. Not head on like a monohull. Otherwise the tunnel becomes more of a square edge to the face of the wave. On an angle the two hulls slice the wave and the tunnel works more of the cushioning effect. Effectively you walk a cat through the sea state than sticking to a line. I was a former boat crew at a volunteer marine rescue here in Australia and we ran Noosa cats and they are brilliant for bar crossings. The only thing you need to watch is with following seas as this can cause the hulls to dig in and corkscrew if the sea state is faster than the vessel speed. Otherwise a cat is brilliant for rough breaking water.
