Highly advised for anyone navigating Haulover to watch that. Rule #1: keep your bow above the water, especially if you have an open bow. Rule #2: make sure your boat is suitable for the current conditions. Bigger waves = bigger boat. Rule #3: "lake boats" aren't made for the ocean. Lake boats have shallow draft and downturned bows. Stay in the harbor with lake boats. Rule #4: if you take even one wave over the bow, turn around and go back in. With each wave you're getting heavier and sinking deeper, which means the next wave will dump even more water inside your boat. It's a downward spiral, then it's too late. Rule #5: secure all passengers before entering rough water. Rule #6: no passengers in open bow in rough water (judgement call, based on size of vessel vs size of waves). Rule #7: wearing floatation devices in rough water highly advised, kids especially. At the very least have them handy, and in sufficient numbers for all passengers.

I've spent years as an ocean tour guide in large rigid hull inflatables on the coast. It amazes me that some of these boats are clearly expensive, and yet the operators don't know how to run them and are clearly put their passengers lives at risk. Either they don't have to take a safe boating course or are too arrogant to take one. It's not just the risk of swamping or having a passenger in the water without a life jacket, it's the damage you can do to someone especially if they are on the bow of the boat when a wave tosses them into the air. There are plenty of hard things to land on, like handlebars and the deck itself, or even landing hard on your tailbone or back. To put anyone in the front section of a small boat in high frequency waves is incredibly irresponsible... you can see the slingshot coming from a mile away. Also the happy faces turn to fear very quickly after the first dunking. Amazing video and very educational. Anyone travelling through that canal to the open sea should have to watch this video before being allowed to do so.

The one common theme in all these clips is the total lack of skill and responsibility from the skipper of these boats. Unsuitable boats for the conditions, lack of thought in handing out life jackets before they enter the inlet, lack of basic instruction before they set off to the passengers, alcohol, I sail over here in Northern Ireland in an eighteen foot yawl, a large open dinghy. My rules are (as skipper) NO alcohol under any circumstances, lifejackets on at all times, one adult with every child and I give instruction to everyone on what to do if someone goes overboard. The water here is very cold about 10 degrees so hyperthermia begins to set in after about 10 minutes and finally everyone has to be able to swim. These are my rules and as a skipper if you dont like them then you don't come out on my boat

@@Mr.McWatson then give it less gas if it gets to vertical which idk i’d definitely see the wave coming so i can ease off the throttle as your peaking up the wave. but with the trim angle + acceleration the bow should stay up high. always check the forecast before heading out. slow down if it gets to choppy or if the boat starts to slam back down too much and quickly find a line in between the waves where you can give it gas and book it straight or sideways with the waves/chops into calmer water. if there is any lol. i’m more experienced on the river then ocean. the one time i took out the river boat into ocean i slowed down too fast and a wave came in crashing over the top of boat and filled up the boat with gallons of water. the automatic bilge pump kicked in and we all freaked out and eased back to the bay.

Hello guys from South Africa, I have questions. I only ever did my fresh water inland skipper's, and I don't even have a boat currently. But I'd love to know more anyways. When it's stated that the exit (or entry) was bad, what was it? What should the skipper have done differently? Forget the PFD stuff. Just the driving. From the little that I can see it seems like a constant throttle setting gets the guys in trouble? That a idle, or low throttle just before the crest, or on the crest should be used? Something along those lines? The throttle has to be changed as waves are negotiated. I also see a lot of bowriders with people in the nose, lowering the nose, yet the trim seems to be neutral or full down. My instinct would be to trim up, so you can raise the nose if the shit is about to hit the fan, but I don't even know if that is right. What's the procedure? Just in general. I loved a comment somewhere that an inlet will actually generate some standing waves, as the tide comes in. That was really helpful, and made a ton of sense.
@douglashedenkamp10872 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, and if I saw conditions like that I would turn around immediately no matter what boat I was in. That is probably the original and biggest sin in these videos, in my opinion. However, I do have some experience with an open bow "lake" boat on the ocean. In my experience, taking the waves at an angle, and going slower makes it much less likely that water is going over the bow. I haven't tried trimming up, and I don't think that would work, because when your nose gets too high, that is when the problem starts--what goes up must come down. The higher the bow is on the upside of the wave, the faster it is going to slam down on the back side of the wave, which is what leads you to dive into the face of the next wave. So I would try to go slow enough to have a little bow rise (but certainly not on plane) and take the waves at an angle. Perhaps if a big wave comes out of nowhere, give it a little throttle just enough to get the bow over the crest, but as soon as the bow gets over the crest, throttle back down a touch so you don't launch off the wave with your bow high in the air. Even going relatively slow and taking an angle isn't foolproof, however, because waves don't always come from the same direction. You might be turned at an angle to the prevailing surf, and a wave could come straight at you from a different direction (particularly in an inlet where the waves can reflect off the jetty). So you need to (1) know the conditions your boat can handle and be conservative about going out when surf is up, and (2) even on a good day you better have multiple bilge pumps in any boat that is going out on the ocean, cause sometimes water will get in no matter what you do.

Everyone in the back of the boat to lift the bow. Apply power to ride the wave up, cut power at the crest of the wave ( as the bow starts to drop ) and glide down into the trough. Add power to ride up the next wave. Rinse and repeat. Only use enough power to keep moving and not fly off the crest of the waves. Too much power and you crash down into the trough and the bow will be too low to avoid " stuffing " it into the next wave. A closed bow can take it but an open bow floods real fast.
