The added bracing was for a floor pan replacement. It looks like someone intended to restore the car. They probably gave up after realizing that parts aren't abundant. There's a good chance that in the search for a floor pan they found a more solid example.

@oops1952. Be aware.... Detroit maintained build quality longer than you think..... My father's 1977 LTD II Wagon racked up 532,000 Fully-Documented miles on the original V-8, 351M V-8; with C-4 Automatic transmission. That was when Ford, by it's own admission, did NOT build their best cars. Ours was well maintained to be sure, but still in turn did everything asked of it. A bulletproof powertrain & body that lasted TRIPLE the life of any ugly-ass euro box. It travelled to Florida at least twice, and Oklahoma once to haul a 1958 Ford Ranchero back home to Maryland.

In the factory issued Workshop manual Volume 1 it gives max speeds of the various models for tune up use. The 220 ,carbureted car has t o do 160KPH,101 Miles per hour. The 219, a 180 with a 220 front and engine will do 176 KPH. I spent most of my youth playing with american V8 engines. A stock 265 Chev v8 or Ford 272 V8 will not do 100 Mph and neither feel safe approaching those speeds,wheres Daimler built cars to run on the autobahn which had no Speed limits back then.

I was a teen military dependent in Frankfurt, West Germany in the mid-'70s and I happily got around by bicycle and even motorcycle and I'll never forget all the Benzes in the streets, they were everywhere and here I had expected VW Bugs to the most popular car, not even close. And one afternoon a teacher at Frankfurt High hauled a few of us to an event or something and he said, "This will probably be the only time you ever ride in a Mercedes-Benz." He was clearly proud of his car and, well, so far, he was right in a sense--no more rides in a classic Benz like his, just a couple of rides in an '80s Benz with a colleague. Yet these days, tho' I have no Benz-type money, I honestly don't find the modern models all that appealing as all that makes then stand out are the oversized stars. Something is cartoonish about their lines, but Mercedes is not alone, I suppose, in working that glam hard.

@@robbchastain3036 for sure man. I was surprised at how reasonable they are. Trim parts will hurt bad I the wallet but maintenance parts are not bad at all. Mine just sat for like 2mo, went out and looked for critters under the hood and it started up as soon as the starter rolled over. Just a little nit pick. The fact that the hub caps were steel had nothing to do with the Korean "conflict", which had been over 5 years by this car's model year. Chrome was also in short supply during Korea, many cars and trucks had painted bumpers 1950-52. Stainless and chrome were not in short supply after 1953, American cars went crazy with the stuff in the mid to late 50's after all.

I wished you had the engine from that MB as you would find it very similar to the Datsun 1.6 L engines of the 70's. As a mater of fact, when buying tools for working on the Datsun, MAC and Snap-On listed the valve adjusting wrench as a Mercedes tool! torque specs and tolerances were identical! The other models during the 70's, the 1200, and B210, owed their engines to the lowly Austin A30's. Only difference was the Datsun engine didn't leak as much oil (of course the aluminum heads were different also). I loved the 'four on the tree' shifting as well as all the fittings for lubrication. Such things as door hinges, hood and trunk hinges, both the brake and clutch pedals, as well as almost all points where movement between two or more parts were lubed. Now of course it is the nylon/plastic era and these are guaranteed to fail sooner. Keep up the crawl!
@googleusergp

Another repeat, so I'll add in what I did the last time: That "MB Tex" type material wears like iron even after being out in the elements for decades. No VIN, can't win, but might go something like: L for left hand drive, 120 for 180 Series, 0 for gasoline engine, then a two digit model code, then N for standard transmission or Z for Hydrax clutch, 85 for 1958 model year (58 reversed), and the rest is the production sequence. Should be code DB40 "Schwarz" (Black) exterior paint. These were sometimes called "Roundies" by the Mercedes-philes.

Correct the 2.2L M180 I6 (220a) and 2.2L M180.924 I6 (220S). Funny fact The early Toyota and Nissan straight six Engines were heavily based on the Mercedes ones! Steve is mixing in the W105 and W128 series!
