I remember thinking when I first saw this painting, that it must be a modern work added to the church, and I was absolutely gob-smacked when I discovered it was Renaissance. It is striking in so many ways and I went back to see it many many times in the 6 months I spent in that glorious city.

I love this painting. It frustrating to see because its behind and iron grate so you have to push your face to the bars. No mention in the piece of the included self portrait. Also they mispronouced Felicity. Fey-lee-chee-tah

I would also like to hear about the choice of coloration in this painting. How he used almost "pop art" type of vibrant colours. And the garments. Some of the figures looked in nudes but for the vibrant colours. It as if they were wearing body tight lycra like athletes. Highly unusual for the type of painting from that era.

Caravaggio is a tough act to follow, but this is lovely. I appreciate the mystery surrounding what's being depicted - so many clues and details to consider, but no one true answer as things stand. Kinda suits the subject matter in a very poetic way. 🙂

Fascinating! The flow of fabrics makes it almost difficult to tell where some figures begin and others end. I'm curious about the young blond man on the far right who's looking out at the viewer. He seems to be completely out of the action.
