Raphael Sanzio was one of the top three masters of the high renaissance, along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Although he is not regarded as a great innovator in the same sense as his revered peers, he remains an artist at the apex of the high renaissance period because of the way he portrayed his subjects. He created harmonious spaces for his subjects through his compositions.
The School of Athens is a symbol of Philosophy, Science, and Art; It’s a scene where the greatest philosophical minds in history come together to debate and learn from one another.

The School of Athens by Raphael is what opened my eyes to art when I was an 11 year old boy (I'm now 57)! I can tell you the day / date that happened: Saturday, April 24, 1976. I was in the 6th grade and on spring break. Seeing *THIS IMAGE* was my first *WOW!* moment with art. However, until now, I'd _never_ heard, read or seen anyone explain this creation with such an obvious love of its intricacies! In the last 46 years of my life, nothing has ever made me ache to time travel back and meet (or just be a silent observer of) Raphael more than this video! Bravo! I was gladly subscribe! P.S. Just as a point of reference for my eclectic tastes.... My second *WOW!* moment with art came when I saw Frank Frazetta's "The Death Dealer" six months later, and I have just as great an appreciation for Renaissance art, as I do SF/F art!

I was late to the artist scene. I was inspired by the School of Athens in college but I was in my mid to late 40's when I intended college. I now have this painting in my home office.

While not mentioned specifically, the figure in red below the statue of Athena is generally thought to be that of Plotinus, I believe. I would wonder, then, why he is on the side of empirical philosophy with Aristotle when his philosophy was so abstract and an interpretation of Plato. Plotinus did, I believe, put much energy into reconciling Plato and Aristotle. If the figure is Plotinus, it's curious as to where he's placed.
