Bought the grizzly block plane and a 22" smoothing plane and set them up just like you did and can't be happier with them. The 22" did take substantially more lapping to make the sole dead flat. I also slightly lapped the very edges and leading flat with a microscopic bevel like Paul Sellers. They both work great.

All of my hand planes are wooden, either bought or made, but I wanted a metal plane for my smoother for better accuracy and speed. I had been eyeing the Grizzly smoother for a long time and this video finally got me off the fence and I bought it. It is AWESOME!!!! Mine didn't need a lot of tune up, so I was up and running pretty quickly. I actually used it to prep some stock to build ANOTHER plane. Thanks Rex. Life's better now!

Rex I bought one of these. The issue of the advance can be fixed by adding a small piece of aluminum the same thickness of the blade and long enough to go from the opening for the advance lever to the bolt that holds the blade and chip breaker together. The advance lever end has a place to grip and does not fall into the space of the blade slot. I also made one with a slot in the insert piece so it passes on each side of the blade/chip breaker slot bolt in the blade slot. I'm still experimenting with it but it seems to work great with this addition.

Luv it About 2 years ago I bought a Stanley low angle jack plane to use on my shooting board. Was over $100 but best price I had ever seen. Checked the right side vs the sole for square and it was out .006 across the sole. Called Stanley and couldn't get assurance that a replacement would be any better as it would be from a fulfillment center. So I stripped it and set it up on a milling machine. Milled a test piece first then the plane right hand side ( not the sole). Hand rubbed it smoother and it is perfect

I have pretty much the same plane with the same blade advancement problem. I got it at Harbor Freight for $15 + came with a bonus mini-plane which I actually really like once I got it all fixed up. One issue (in addition to All of the Probs Rex mentioned) was that the holes where the tree attaches to the base were not totally bored out, so it was a little crooked overall, and not close enough to the mouth to allow much blade advancement. Also (fyi), when selecting my plane at the retail location, I carefully inspected each one to make sure I got the best chance at a decent tool. There is SO much variation between individual planes. Mouth size, for example, was > 1/2 " variance! I chose the smallest opening thinking I could enlarge it if need be. I also had to make a new handle. These are made for folks with tiny hands. Love your channel Rex! Keep up the good work. (P.S. I also bought the #33 there (which Rex looks at in another video) for same price, and I have had slightly better results.)

While the hollows are disappointing I prefer that over a convex surface. It is really hard to hold the plane square to the sandpaper and keeping your grind uniform. At least with a hollow it will not rock side to side and you can just concentrate pressure where you want it

Well, I'll tell ya what Rex: I bought the Grizzly 22" jointer plane for something like 80 bucks. Very flat, very square, and a solid build, but the iron was absolute junk, it wasn't even near flat. So here's what I did: I bought an IBC plane blade from Woodcraft for 40 dollars on sale, regularly 60 dollars. They have the ones that fit a Stanley/Record planes. Well I'll tell you what...Now it performs fantastic, like a 350 dollar plane and that's no BS. I absolutely loveitloveitloveit ! ! !

Flat enough to use and I was also liking the knife edge chip breaker. Seemed very quality for the price even compared to the older planes I've bought. People shouldn't pass on grizzly just because they're cheap. They have great stuff

I bought a few Stanley Sweatheart era planes (1930s) and fully restored them. They are about the pinnacle of Stanley development (except their Bedrocks). Really excellent castings. Buy cheap from eBay and enjoy restoring them. I also restored a full set of Stanley Bedrocks (including #2) from junk status and installed Hock blades and chip breakers. These are my users and they are awesome. During the restoration I applied real asphaltum coating which is far superior to paint or powder coating. Those Victorians knew something! You can buy #4 and #5 regular Bailey pattern very inexpensively and have the real thing. Bravo Rex for encouraging people to use handplanes. Love to see it.

If you can find one economically, this is a great solution. For some reason, the price on some older Stanleys go through cycles where even junk ones aren't particularly cheap, at least in the US version of Ebay.

Nicely done Rex and very informative. That Grizzly looks a lot like the Taytools no. 4, and with the adjusting screw for the frog, it appears to be made by the same company. They are quite proud of their plane and their price reflects that... $80 delivered. When they first started offering their line of planes, they were much closer in price to Grizzly's current pricing. Even though I am all set with my smoothing planes, I'll keep watching because I enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!
@YCBurninator
@YCBurninator 5 жыл бұрын
I have the Taytools no. 4, and I think that it is the same plane. It's also the same design as used by Rockler for their Bench Dog no. 4 (though Rockler has the lever cap with a brass color as opposed to chrome). I have purchased both of the two planes above, and have seen some quality control issues. The Rockler no. 4 that I had was badly scraped up, had a rough and out of square frog, and just didn't fit together quite right. Otherwise, the same things that Rex saw with the Grizzly were present with Rockler. I returned that plane, as I had hoped that the increased price would have meant that the setup would have been a bit easier (I've restored 6 planes from rusty condition, but I wanted to invest less time in that one). The Taytools plane was purchased when it was just under $40 shipped via eBay and was pretty easy to set up. I have noticed the blade doesn't want to advance far enough when set up with the chipbreaker set close to the edge of the blade. This is both from the same screw issue seen with the Big Horn plane, and the chip breaker hole ending up hitting the screw that tensions the lever cap (you can see it happening at 12:40-12:43 in this video). My lateral adjuster was also off-center, so adjusting it is a bit annoying. Overall, I think this is worth it for the price Grizzly is offering the plane for, but not as much at the current Taytools price.

Wrong! That’s like saying every electrical cable is the same. They’re not Stanley copies, that frog is record copy. Why ship the rosewood to other countries if it’s origin is India? Middlemen have no elegance to you buyers. What you expect from English tools you can’t expect from India tools. The electric plane exists and it superseded hand planes and so did machine planes.

Grizzly also sells machine tools like mills etc. A thing I have found is that tools like this where the company name is all about price point and the manufacturing is all done by one (separate) outfit, there seems to be a sorting process where some importers get first pick. For machine tools, Jet seems to get the first pick, then Grizzly, then Shop Fox etc. Apparently Grizzly is ahead of others in the hand tools line. Not at all sure how this is negotiated, but the arrangement seems pretty old. I have a 1980 Jet-16 mill drill which is a solid machine made in Taiwan. It's no Bridgeport, but for $500 it's a fine unit.

Probably in the made in the same factory. I also have a review on my channel. It doesn't have the same issue with the adjuster that the Big Horn though. Thanks for the info Rex! One criticism, and not a big deal because you were just "testing", but Rex, when you were testing the jack plane on end grain you were planing *PARALLEL* to the face of your vise which caused the board to move! Much more control can be achieved of course by planing perpendicular to the vise face (i.e. "toward" the bench").

An easy fix for adjusting for a heavier cut is to adjust the chip breaker/cap iron further back from the cutting edge. This allows the blade give a heavier cut without any major adjustments to the cap iron or it's screw, as you only realistically need to cut very slightly deeper. Another adjustment you can make - to obtain a heavier cut - is to camber the cutting edge more heavily, but this tends to be reserved for use with the jack plane #5. Best comparisons can be drawn if checking measurements/dimensions used by makers such as Stanley and then compare these with the cheaper planes in this video.

Thank you for your informative and often funny videos, Rex. I live in Cape Town, South Africa and for some inexplicable reason there are almost no hand planes available from any supplier in the country. However, this morning I visited a very smart shop called the Hardware Centre and immediately they showed me the Soba range. I did the sole square test on the No. 4 - fail, but the 4 ½ passed this test. They also showed me a Veritas No. 4, but at more than double the price of the Soba and then I'd still have to part with more money for a blade! Nuts! The Soba range looks very similar to the Grisley in your video - powder coated, with matte coated handles (shoe and foot?), knife edge chip breaker, but the cap is made from brass. Anyway, after negotiating a discount, I took the plunge and bought the 4 ½ for about $100. I'll start preparing it tomorrow. Keep up the good work.

I’ve done a few demos on how to get them back into working order. Many were never fettled to begin with and are in like new condition with minor surface rust and white paint streaks from when they tried to plane a door edge and failed due to a factory edge. I bought a cheapo Harbor freight from the store in Lima, Ohio. Not square at all and just...rickety. But the iron from it was good. It took forever to sharpen cause the steel is so hard, but it will shave padauk, pau Amarillo, and bubinga, and it needs is a bit of stropping to put it back to razor sharpness. I picked up another one (harbor freight) at a yard sale and the iron was garbage, so, they aren't consistent. But the iron on first one was worth the time and effort to make a wood body. The rest are on the scrap pile, although I'm thinking I may want to try re-tempering the iron from the yard sale plane..

I have a cobalt 8inch and all the problems mentioned are happening with it. I have a 1895 Stanley no4 and it works great... and I also have a 20 in wooden jackplane? I don't know but it's my favorite and boy is it good sturdy block of wood.

I bought a little blue Stanley #4 plane for $8.. It was one of those that did not 'adjust' well go lighter and/or deeper cuts. So, I tinkered with it, a lot. Over a couple of months of trying to figure it out, I found the culprit. First, I popped out the pins holding the yoke for advance/retreat, and the side to side lever. Then I took the main surface of the frog over to the abrasives on my table saw bed. It was '''WAY" out of whack, so I ground it flat. Put back in, and pretty much the same thing. I then resurfaced the part where the frog sits on the plane. Again, a little bit better, but still not good. I then determined that the mating surface on the plane body had a crown to it, as in convex surface. I used some 80 grit on a flat piece of wood with double sticky tape, about 2 inches wide by 12 or so long. I couldn't fit a file in there because of the raised spot on the back of the plane body for seating the handle. I put a riser block on the other end to keep my abrasive surface flat/parallel to the bottom of the frog. Eventually, I made that part flat, and now the plane iron moves easily, the way you want them to do.

Wow....one of the best hand-plane videos that I've ever seen...thank you! I have several old Bailey-Stanley hand-planes that I've restored and they serve me quite well...I wouldn't mind getting a few modern one...I've just not found any for the right quality AND price...maybe I need to look again.

My main beef is the amount of free play in the adjuster wheel fork, I corrected this by making a thin brass plate, cut from an old lock, and bending it around the divet, this was secured in place with a drop of super glue.

The sole of these planes seems to be a batch by batch situation. The Grizzly 10" I just got was significantly bowed out in the center, enough that it would rock on flat glass, with a ton of sanding later and it's nearly flat. The rear handle bolt was just barely short enough to hold the handle firmly, if the wood shrinks at all I'll need to shorten the bolt. Everything else was the same as your review.

The close ups of the planes give me flashbacks of my Childhood when my Dad went to work and i was a kid i used to go into his Shop ( our Basement ) and clean and organize his tools for him one of those days i tried using his Handplanes on a scrap board and tried to adjust it using the knobs before i knew it i had it completely apart and had no idea on how it went back together correctly I panicked and just half ass put it all back together so all the parts stayed with that Plane Dad never did ask me about that as i assumed he simply put it back together correctly after i saw him using it on the next project I ronically for myself i wound up becoming a Professional Woodworker for over 20 years later on in life where i learned how to refurbish old planes and how to take them apart and put them back together correctly Of course Professionally we mostly used power tools to build most of the projects we made but occasionally i still enjoy hand planing on certain projects and have even made special projects or gifts using only hand tools for that one

Late to this, apologies. In my experience, many companies in India sub contract out the work to small workshops. They have a central company that does the international marketing etc, but the manufacture is piecemeal. The more sophisticated ones recognise the differences in quality and brand and price the products differently to reflect this. The others do not which makes purchasing a bit of a lottery! But people like you review the models and really help us to make the right choice, so thank you.

I know that you didn’t really like this plane, but I spent about three hours honing it and fixing that garbage chromed chip breaker. It works like a champ now! Def one of my finest shaving planes at the moment. Just wanted to let you know that it is in fact possible. I solved the adjustment issue by resetting the chip breaker to the iron. Also ground the play off of the chip breaker threaded hole. Much love Rex. Thank you for all of your tips.

Interesting good video, I had on a whim ordered a couple of India planes because they were cheap and looked good. I had the same trouble as you did with a Draper #4 plane and with the cap iron screw bottoming out in the slot on frog preventing it from even coming out enough to cut wood. Then I have the opposite thing on a #3 spear and jackson plane, the mechanism would not retract far enough to keep the blade from sticking out, at least that was an easier fix. Thanks again for your great info and fun presentations.

I have a 9 3/4" version of this plane branded by Rider. It has the stamped chip breaker, better adjusting mechanism, and appears to be painted. I got it at a local hardware store for $46. The part of the shoe where the iron rests wasn't quite right, so I had to adjust it to get the iron to sit flat. But otherwise it's alright. It took more work than I'd like to set it up, so maybe no should just save up for nicer tools that are good out of the box.
