Twilight trapped the ponies in an eternity spell, she didn't want anyone to die so she was willing to take away there freedom so they can live forever, but her friends convinced her that life goes on and one ending of life is a new beginning for another. Realising her friends don't want to be trapped to live for all eternity, twilight finally accepts it and let's go of the magic orb. Well that's my guess anyway :)
