Wow! This lesson has to be the most practical, straightforward, and logical I’ve ever had - on video or person-to-person . . . thank you for breaking down what can be for some (me) the ever-bewildering concept of aiming, and putting it together with awesome videography to create that visual memory to play in my mind’s eye as I get down on my shots. I’m looking forward to getting to the pool hall early before league play tonight and practicing using my new visual memory of aiming and angles. Thank you for all your videos - they’re very well-done - professional and informative. God bless you!

I remember a guy coming into the local pool hall when no one but the owner was around. He was a trucker and headed to the US Open in about a month, he came in and we played a little serious for a while. I didn't lose as much as I should have looking back ,but he was better than I was at the time so he started telling me what he was doing and he was using this technique but he had only 3 spots on the ball he called it center to edge. This could be seen most easily on the striped ball because they'd be center and each edge of the stripe. He said then under almost all circumstances you could get a ball back to center table better using one of the three spots then trying to over engineer the amount of English that you were using. Since it's advantageous to get back to the center almost every time anyways he said it made every shot natural just varied by speed. Once in awhile there would be a ball in the way and he'd have to choose one of the other two shots that he could possibly make and hit it harder or softer. He made no mention of moving the tip of the cue back to center. I'm pretty sure what he was telling me was to stroke straight through those individual three spots and learn how to aim on those three spots from any point on the table, removing the majority of shots where you vary the English and increasing the effectiveness of my practice. I used it for a while and it helped my game a lot, especially on tough cut shots and close to the rail shots it just simplified them and on top of that help me get back to center table when I wanted it. You'll still need to figure out what those old timers were trying to tell you to win, but some of them teach it simpler than others.

OK, I'll have a look at it but I guess higher skill players don't do this Kung Fu calculation often. I do have a question however... When you do the pivot on the cue ball aiming spot, it appears that you simply move the grip to either side until it points to center cue. It would seem that depending on the distance of the pivot point from the cue ball will have a great effect on the outcome, and that if your bridge hand is necessarily near or far from the cue will make a large change in the trajectory on the cue ball. Hope you can picture what I am trying to convey. The nearer the cue, the larger the trajectory deviation.

Correct me if i am wrong but this system seems to only be using OUTSIDE PIVOTS away from the cut angle, This is an interesting implementation of CTE. Have been a CTE user for years, and am applying the PRO ONE methods of this which also uses an A B C aiming point on the object Ball while using the Left and Right Edges of the Cue ball to align the shot pre pivot. One of the biggest examples of a difference in implementation of your technique would be at kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHaahWOdodmCiMU 4:54 Where you have a 15 degree cut to your right, in your terms you used a A to A aiming with a Pivot Out. In the PRO ONE method, which sticks to the ABC points being Left To Right, you would use a RIGHT EDGE on Cue Ball to C on the Object Ball with a Pivot Inwards. In all the methods of CTE i've seen so far almost all of them utilise pivots inwards and outwards depending on angle, with yours being the only one which utilises EXCLUSIVELY outward pivots, but with a variations in the Cue Ball Alignment points (being ABC on the cue ball rather than , Centre to Edge, Right Edge to ABC or Left Edge to ABC). Thanks for doing the video, but more impressed with the ingenuity of implementation of a ONE DIRECTIONAL PIVOT CTE. As with all CTE users, i think there are always certain Pivots and shot types that are not as spot on as others, and i think anyone who already uses CTE in any form can benefit from the additional information you have shared here ...... and for those who do not this i a brilliant introduction which removes the "PERCEPTION" mystery behind other CTE Preechers, which to be honest often times diminishes the Technique and over simplifies something that still needs to be practiced. Would love to hear your thoughts on how Bridge Lengths affect your technique as there is always a debate between Starting More Offset Pre Pivot (1.5 tips out) vs using a shorter bridge to set up the pivot which can get the same pivots required when setting up thinner cuts. Well i hope at least one person understood this ?? :) Cheers and keep up the good work Chris

As I mentioned in the video, I had to watch multiple videos multiple times and re-read articles over and over. It wasn't until I got on the table and started trying stuff, that I noticed similarities between all the different interpretations and saw that, for myself, the one directional pivot showed some consistency. I am by NO MEANS, saying this is THE WAY to perform CTE. This is just what I was able to interpret from what I studied. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. If I exposed another perspective into the system, awesome! As far as the ABC (left cut) vs CBA (right cut), I just thought it's easier to remember that A is 15 degree cuts, B never changes (30 degree cuts), and C is 45 degree cuts. I've also read/watched about how the bridge length matters. However, this didn't seem to matter when I was performing the 15/30/45 with my other camera in the way and had a LONG bridge (over a foot). I am NOT saying that the bridge length doesn't matter, I am saying that it didn't seem to have an affect in what I was showing.
@damvanrob5 жыл бұрын
@@LilChrisPoolPlayer yup totally agree with ur thoughts on abc relating to a specific angle. Anyway for comparisons sake Pro one Anything less than 30 is a pivot inwards 30 to 43-45 is a pivot outwards 45-50 is a pivot Inwards based off of the 1/4 alignment Anything beyond that is a 1/8th alignment with either in or out. Your system Pivot out for all based on 15 is A 30 is B 45 is C Beyond is 1/8 Personally I think your 30 on B will help me the most as the CTE on B is usually to thick unless you are on tournament conditions!

A couple thoughts. First, this was really interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to give this a try Second, ok A = 15, B = 30, C = 45 and "D" = ...a lot. This seems overly simple, and your examples specifically show 15, 30, 45, and a very thin cut. My question is, what do you do if you have an angle of, say, 22 degrees. Does aiming right in between A and B work for that? The "D" Spots are very vague in this system - jumping from 45 degrees to the maximum which is around 90 degrees for a centerball hit is a pretty extreme jump. Surely there must be more to it (or, if there's not, that's wild and I'm excited to try it out), but a, say, 85 degree shot must be different from a 65 degree shot, right? (Oh jeez, now that I'm thinking about it, they aren't drastically different. This is blowing my mind a little bit) While this *could* apply for banks, kicks, and caroms, I'm not sure it makes sense to use it in those contexts (we already have the diamond system, tangent line/natural roll logic, etc). However, I'm very curious to know how english affects these shots (Or even like cut induced throw), and I do hope you put out a video explaining it. I'm not trying to be critical - on the contrary, this was an amazing video and my mind is racing with ideas and questions. I'm very excited to head down to the bar tonight and give this a try

Chris, I love all your videos and this was a beautiful presentation. But that was not CTE. You made significant adjustments to the basic setup. BTW, that was not a 45 degree cut angle, it was more like 40. Unfortunately, so far, no simplified aiming system can be supported by any mathematical analysis. Check out Dr. Dave's website, he has hundreds of mathematical proofs on every significant concept regarding the physical dynamics of pool. Aiming systems are not on the list except "ghost ball". But ghost ball theory helps very little in actual play. I have not met anybody that can see the ghost ball contact point and who can visualize cut angles without a protractor. When you play, I know for a fact that you don't use your CTE method because there are too many variables such as friction, speed, and spin and there are mathematical proofs for that as well. To play shape on the cue ball for position, you have to constantly worry about the correct english and speed and how that affects your aiming point. You make great shots because I believe you have put in an enormous amount of practice to perfect your game. Natural talent comes into play on how quickly you learn different concepts on the table but it isn't a substitute for practice and repetition. Unfortunately, if the game was that simple, we would all be pros. Knowledge, practice and precise execution is what sets apart the pros from regular folk.

You are absolutely right. He explains it in simple terms and does not digress into other useless information trying to demonstrate how knowledgeable he is. Very well done. These kind of aiming systems are a bit tricky. I think it depends what level of a player you want to be. I realized after trying multiple aiming systems, I'm better with no system at all. I do a lot of aiming with the edge of my ferrule, and allows me to play any type of english on any shot with ease. But I'm focused on the contact point only. It allows me to worry about my speed, cue ball control, english, etc. I found when I use systems, I worried way to much about making the ball, and less concentration on cue ball control.

Nice video, but this is NOT CTE. True CTE is exactly that, center to edge alignment, and other forms of CTE include a secondary line along the cutting edge of the CB to points A, B, or C, not aiming the tip to these points at an offset of 1 tip from center. I'm going to check this out next time I play because I'm curious, but I'm betting it breaks down for certain distances or angles.

@@johmarydia2357 Pro One is just the method of pivoting to center. The alignments are still the same as traditional CTE, which is different than what is described here. I’m very glad to see this shown. I began playing billiards at the age of 10. I used the 10 ball instead of The Cue Ball to understand what was going on with the ball I was hitting. One day At the age of 15 I was introduced to my brothers best friends grandfather. This man played professionally. He was watching me shoot his table for a brief period of time and he realized that I actually saw the lines on the table to make my shots. Even bank shots were simple. playing on the league pool games people knew do not leave me a bank shot on any ball especially the 8 ball because I will most likely make it.This is without me reading books or educating myself on how to play better. It was just playing with the 10 a lot it and was my body that was creating the angle. Joe saw the deep passion that I had for billiards(ALL) and said as long as I promised to never ever bet anything on this game He would teach me a few little tips and tricks one of which was NEVER ever hit left or right of center. I was using the same the system without even knowing what the name of it was. I kept my promise to Joe and never disrespected him or the sport by betting anything on it. I had old teammates that thought I had no idea what I was doing. However those are not the teammates that I went to the APA tournament in Vegas in 2011. Out of over a thousand teams the team I was fortunate enough to be on came in 147th. So we won a small amount of money however nothing will ever replace the passion I have for billiards and respect and gratitude I’ve held for Joe all these years. A extremely important thing for a new pool or billiards player is to know how to chalk properly and after each and EVERY shot! Our team represented the state of Massachusetts in the year 2011 with the team that I was on and I was not questioning my shooting style/system There are many systems out there to learn however I stick with the basics just like Joe showed me to do. Joe you are missed.

When you said at 2:51min. "Pivot the cue" you meant move it parallel or pivot the front of cue. Per video at 5:12 min. you pivot the point that is the center of the cue.
@LilChrisPoolPlayer2 жыл бұрын
Pivoting is not a parallel movement. Your bridge hand is the pivot point, so you pivot your grip hand away or closer to you body which automatically pivots the front of your cue.

Wonderful descriptive video. Two quick questions though. How are you personally determining what the approximate cut angle should be -15,30 degrees or something else. Secondly, I presume pivoting means moving the back part of the cue only- much as you describe in your “Back Hand English “ video. Correct? Thanks again
@LilChrisPoolPlayer2 жыл бұрын
Straight on is obviously 0 degrees. Perpendicular would be 90 degrees. Halfway between those is 45 degrees. 1/4 ball hit is approximately a 45 degree hit 1/2 ball hit is approximately a 30 degree hit 3/4 ball hit is approximately a 15 degree hit. With all these references, it's not too difficult to gauge the in between angles.

wow, an explanation that actually makes sense.... I still doesn't believe that this method works (at least for me), but now at least I can go to the poolroom and actually try it myself to see the results... who knows, maybe it will work, i'll see....

Basically CTE is just is a shortcut to finding the right line of the shot to begin with. Something I and lots of others do naturally in snooker without any of this pivot stuff this is knowledge and muscle memory through spending thousands of hours at the table. . However I think it CTE can help when your mind goes blank in those 'don't feel great tonight' moments all us players have. The line of the shot (where you place your cue) is different than the line from OB to pocket unless its straight in but experience and technique like pre shot routine timing shot section pace foot placement stance timing grip bridge etc is of course a part of it all as you know... I think technique is less important on pool tables than snooker which demands more accuracy in cueing technique but as long as you know this line of the shot you can be ok. There are only three reasons you miss bad technique and picking out the wrong line the last one is bad position not having a shot on or a really difficult shot where you cut down the percentage for making it. The reason we don't use this method in snooker is because we learn to pick out the line from the standing position so we can place our foot on the correct line before we get down and use our chest and chin as sort of locking points to help keep everything in line. It has always been regarded as a bit of a no no technique wise at snooker all this this moving around when you are down on the shot to find the line . CTE encourages the player to do this and so it differs from natural snooker aiming technique because of the pivot when down on the shot. The distance on a snooker table is large and the pockets are less forgiving but that said I think I know a player that seems to use cte on long shots - Judd Trump (the world champion) He is the only one I have noticed moves right to centre on the white and I watched him at close quarters not just on TV but never asked him. He only does this sometimes mainly at distance so maybe he is aware of this or maybe I am wrong but watching him got me interested to find out. I wonder could you watch a few videos and see if I am right? Its a very unusual thing for a snooker player to do. Just got me curious.
@LilChrisPoolPlayer5 жыл бұрын
I've heard of Judd Trump, so I can eventually check out any videos on him. I'm sure the CTE system "could" work for snooker, but would require A LOT more diligence due to the balls being smaller and the pockets being smaller and less forgiving.
@theoldgreenbaizecom-fd2zp5 жыл бұрын
@@fergyspoolshots I don't think many players give away their secrets much and agree snooker is more difficult and I don't know any players that use CTE pro or admit this if they did but I do think Judd Trump does use it on long shots as he starts off aiming on the side of the white then comes into centre ball which is a dead giveaway. I might be wrong and it might just be a habit but that's what I see on his long shots so in my honest opinion he is using CTE .
@@fergyspoolshots well don't know but he does start off on the side of the ball like you say. I dont know much about CTE but think you can come in from either side depending on the shot? He's left handed so might have something to do with that too? but might look diff on TV too?. I watched him up close live and I think he is using a form of CTE on certain shots. . He is the only snooker player I have ever seen cue up this way. What other reason is there?

Best presentation I've ever seen of CTE basics. I've been trying to get it since I got some calls from Hal Houle many years ago. This gives me hope that I might still get to understand it before I'm in the grave. :) I hope you follow this up with a video about how to apply spin within the confines of this system. To watch this video it would seem applying back had english would reverse the pivot into the center of the cue ball.
@euphoriacaffe94165 жыл бұрын
Hey Lil' Chris. Just watched your CTE video for the 2nd time and wanted to add a couple of observations. Again what you've done here is simply brilliant. Taking what's been one of the "Mysteries of the Universe" in aiming and made it a simple "point, pivot, shoot the shot" deal. The observations: You don't use the typical "See Center Cue Ball aimed at the outside edge of the object ball" as the starting visual. That's perfect because that only applies to the "A and B" aiming lines anyway. C and extreme outside cuts the "center cue ball" line is outside in "space" on the object ball. I don't know if you have seen or heard of the "90 90 Aiming System" before. It's a little like CTE without the center cueball aimed at the edge of the object ball part. But the issue I had with it (I wasn't alone) was your cue tip starting position is literally clear out to where your outer edge of the cue tip is placed almost to where it touches the inside of the outer edge of the cue ball. And then you sight in to the A B C (called 90 - center - 90 reverse in that system) on the object ball. It makes the pivot to center so big you have to move your entire body at the hips to get to center cue ball. Your system / explanation takes the BEST of both worlds ... made them simpler, easier, functionally smoother and from what we're seeing, just as (or more) accurate. Thanks again. The only reason I added this comment BTW, is I know there are people out there that got the 90 90 Aiming System and abandoned it because of the extremes I mentioned, which made it difficult to always be putting your cue in the right place and the big pivot. And ... taking the "first see the line from center cue to outside edge of the object ball ... unless you're using the C or outer edge aiming point...." out of it. This gives all those people a truly workable system they can do over and over again. Over and over again. Over and over again ... with something that works is the key to upping your game.

Nice job with the explainations and camera angles. It was easy to follow. I had an old guy show me this once and I was sinking cut balls left and right without issue. I let a couple weeks pass without playing pool and when I tried to remember what he showed me, I must have missed a step because I couldn't figure it out and had to cut em in the old way!

Good video. It does work, but what doesn't convince me? English. Cannot get to the next level without it. I use the good old fashioned ghost ball that my grandfather, an old school money player, taught me back in the early 60's. He said visualize a piano wire stretching from the center of the pocket through the centers of the object ball and ghost ball. Only then can you master English and ball position. He also taught me that too much thought is no good, it should be instinct. And practice, practice, practice which sadly, I was never able to do enough of to get to his level.

This is a new take on my previous understanding of the system and definitely very well explained. The issue I have with the system is that it won't work if you're using right or left English which I use on probably 60 percent of my shots. Either way, good video, by far the easiest explanation I've seen.
