This was my problem also. In my situation, the 220 is connected with 2 separate 110 breakers. They should have a bar in between them but they don’t. Only 1 of the breakers was on. The pump heated right up and then stopped running. After it cooled the pump would run but only at about 1/4 speed. After viewing this video, I checked the breakers. Made sure that they were both flipped on. It works just like it should. 🎉 Thanks for posting!

Having the same problem right now. I have a hayward in-ground pump, the old one just went bad on me after years, so I replaced it with the same model. Within a matter of days, the pump was over-heating, tripping the breaker and shutting down for thermal protection. It was so hot you'd be able to cook on the motor cover. I'm going to have to check this.

What wound up being the problem?

Nice, I didn’t know that low voltage can lead to over heating. Learned some new today, thanks!

Thanks for taking the time for making this video. I'm sure this is the problem I've been having.

I have the exact same issue. My pump is running super hot. I just replaced the shaft seal on the motor and all the gaskets. After putting it together, and connecting the 2 phase electricity (240v) my pump started running hot. I didn't even think to check the two phase breaker. It could be that one phase of the breaker is no longer functioning. I'm going to check the current in each phase to ensure it's not the breaker. Thank you for the tip.

I replaced my pool motor 5 years ago. Today, it's been overheating, shutting down and then starting back up again. Thanks to you, I did measure the voltage and it's giving a healthy 125V. But when I opened up the back of the motor, I noticed that the motor was set to 220V!!! I did save the original (to us since we moved into the house) motor and it ALSO was set to 220V! When I set the current motor to the 120V setting, it pops the 20Amp circuit breaker. So what's this all about? I ordered a new motor. What do I set it to?

supposed 220v input volts,you need check the two wires voltage,supposed 110 volts each。if not,one wire has wrong。breaker has problem。

Dumb question. Did you check the voltage at the line before connecting the pump. I ask because if it wasn't 120ish there it would indicate an issue upstream to the breaker correct?

I went to a call and the pump used 120 , the customer ordered a new motor and kept shutting off after 15 minutes of use, I suspected it was a clogged line due to little suction of the pool vac hardly working but water was still circulating in the pump. Found no other issue they had proper voltage everything seemed fine.

I have a pump that runs for about 30 then overheats and shuts off .I
