Incredible bond! He wraps his little trunk around Adine in response to her touch! He feels right at home in her close and personal space! I know many of us would love to be in her place, but it takes great dedication and hard work to do this every day after the novelty wears off. Every thing everyone said about Phabeni and Adine’s relationship and bonding is absolutely true. It make me get a bit choked up seeing this once very scared, traumatized and grieving baby now reach out for Adine’s gentle love is nothing short of God’s mercy and love. I don't know for sure, but I suspect they also flap their ears, like dogs do their tails - to show part of their emotions - to show anger and happiness, and other emotions. Just like a dog does by wagging their tail, holding it up or tucking it down between their legs - and emotional weather vane.

The ears are typically used only for thermal regulation. They can be used to communicate emotions but that’s only for threat displays. When an elephant feels threatened, they will stand the ears out and raise their heads to look bigger to a potential threat. In the rare case that doesn’t work, the ears are folded back and the head is lowered before an actual charge. Emotions are typically displayed by other body language eg walking backwards towards another elephant can show an attempt to be friendly or to appear submissive, head butting to show playfulness, feistiness, wanting to be left alone or angry. Trunks and trunk gestures can be used in a wide variety of ways to show emotions too. Mothers and allomothers are constantly touching babies to show love and care, elephants will often touch each other all through the day (their love language is touch, as the video says). Trunks can be put in other elephant’s mouths, trunks can be intertwined, babies will sometimes hold on to the tail of the mother with their trunk as they walk, much like human children will hold a parent's hand. Emotions are also, of course, displayed by vocalization. An excellent free resource to learn about this is the Elephant Ethogram (ethography is the study of behavior) website that compiles many different elephant behaviors based on decades of observations of African Savannah (ie like the HERD eles) elephants. happy reading!

In the mid-1970s when I was a teenager I volunteered at the Portland Zoological Research Center (now the Oregon Zoo) and one of my projects was to develop elephant-related questions and answers for an interactive game that zoo visitors could play at the elephant exhibit. How I wish such things would have been available back then! There were only one or two decent books on elephants at the library at the time!

Watching these kinds of videos is very educational and you are very good at teaching us about new baby elephants like you did with Khanysia and even Fenya too when they first came to you.
