In this pool tutorial we look at the path with spin. Using two different examples we examine of every different type of spin affects the path of the cue ball after impact. The video covers, the stun shot, plain ball, top spin, right hand side, screwback, left hand side and then combinations inbetween.
We also look at how the path is changed depending on how close we are to the cushion.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft Supreme Winner UK 8 ball table.

Genius. Excellent video and graphical overlay with explanations. My problem is being able to remember all this when you're actually playing a match. Practice makes perfect!

Cheers. Exactly the more you practice these, the more you just know where the balls going to go, without having to think about it.

if you can visualise the spin direction on the cue ball, then this all becomes clearer. It gets harder when you're going off more than one rail and the side takes effect differently based on distance, pace, etc. This video is a great start though.

I've played snooker for over 20 years. Only by playing English pool have I really started to understand these concepts. This is the best video I've seen on this aspect of the physics. American pool guides have been far more open about these mechanics, along with doubles and two rail hits. The snooker world seems to have been holding secrets back. Jeez, I wish I had been shown this 20 years ago (and had my own table). Thank you

Great video. I tried to predict the path of the cue ball before you took each shot and I was surprised how far out I was on a number of them!!
@PoolSchool

Thanks. Yeah I think it's harder when the cue ball quickly comes into contact with the cushion because of the top spin or screwback not having time to take hold. The way you watched is a great way to practice too, set up any shot, try all the positions and make a prediction for each before you do it.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but if hitting the object ball straight on as you are in this, what is forcing the ball right of the object ball along the tangent line rather than left of the object ball? Is it just that you’re hitting up the table as such, and momentum carries it in that direction? If that is the case if you hit it across the table would the cue ball move forward after striking the object ball? p.s. I should say thanks for the videos, I’ve only very recently started playing the game at the age of 42 and your tutorials are excellent.
@PoolSchool

Thanks, glad you like the tutorials. It may look like I'm hitting the object ball straight on because of the camera angle but there is a small angle here. The cue ball is hitting towards the right of the object ball which is why it travels right along the tangent line. It only takes the smallest of angles to travel along the tangent line, but the smaller the angle the more power it takes to get the cue ball to travel very far along it. You are tight in thinking that it wouldn't travel along the tangent line if you hit the object ball dead straight. Hope that helps?

Question. When you play these various shots, is it easy to get a feel for the different shot and feel for the path of the cue ball? Because on the shot , and not playing it, you would know where the cue ball is roughly going but playing it must feel different especially as you can play so many different types of shot. Thank you.
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 жыл бұрын
It's just a case of doing these things over and over and over again. You're right you just get a feeling for most of them that comes from that repetition. I don't stand there and work everything out before taking the shot, generally I just know from having done it before. There are occassions I'll be a bit more calculating but usually you just have a feel for what's right.

Isn't the angle of the tangent line more 90 degrees ? Specifically, draw a straight line from the pocket through the object ball center . It is more of a T shape correct ? It may be me and the angle of the graphic on my screen.
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you’re right, the tangent line is 90 degrees to the line from the pocket to the object ball. It’s the perspective on the camera angle that makes it look different.

Thanks for this video. Does the table cloth affect the cue ball path with these same shots?
@kmanpilkers
@kmanpilkers 3 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, slightly, especially the cloth on the cushions. On a new cloth it's often described as "sliding" off the cushion more quickly where the cueball makes contact i.e. there is less friction between cueball and cushion and it widens the angle. I think the difference in cloth is so subtle though, it's not going to totally change angles, just the amount of time it takes the cueball to grip the cloth where spin is involved. Not something that's worth worrying about as you get a feel for the table you're playing on.

What do you get the cue back down the table if it's on the cushion between the corner and middle pocket and the object ball is over the corner pocket
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 жыл бұрын
If you mean on the same side of the table as the ball over the pocket, then you can just play to cut the ball quite finely and you’ll come straight back up the table. If you mean on the opposite side then play to hit the short cushion first and with running side (as much as you can get when playing the top of the ball), this will then bring the ball round the angles and up the table. Hope that helps?

I've looked for a video like this on your channel for 3 days now. Horrible title for what it is my guy. I suggest changing it to something like "All the types of spin" or "Stun shot, play shot and more" or something like that. I heard you talking about stun shots and other types of shots and I couldn't find an explanation for them on your channel.
