I agree with most of what I've seen on these videos. I'm here in Tempe and I'd hire this guy. He let's the pool stores off way too easy though. The local chain store (you know the one) has very few competent sales people. I was convinced that I needed to change the water and Pool School confirmed that. But the guys at the store kept telling me more shock. Three weeks and 36 pounds of shock later (48,000 gallon pool), I never got a reading with any free chlorine. Finally went to Checker Pool (better independent store) and got significantly different chemistry results. This time, I found that I had TDS at 2800 ppm and CYA off the chart. Replaced water and started up the pool (based on what Pool School suggested and NOT what I the chain store "strongly recommended"). Water is perfect now. Thanks.

You got this. Take your time adding the CYA 1 pound at a time test after an hour or two and repeat if you need to. that way you’ll prevent overdosing it.

It would really depend on the brand of salt generator. To be sure I'd recommend reading the manufacturers recommendations on at what point to turn on the salt system. Typically it's best to get ph and alkalinity and salt levels to ideal before firing up the salt system. But I'd double check with the brand's manual.

this video was great.thanks for the information. my pool is 5000 gals.i did this process wrong. when i started my pool.the CYA was IDEAL. so i putted baking soda to raise ALK, and than add borax to raise PH. but my mistake was that i putted like 5 pounds at once for each base on the information from poolcalulator. tested and PH and ALK were high.so i than add muriatic acid.tested again and PH and ALK were IDEAL, but now my CYA was LOW.so i just add liquid chlorine and add one chlorine tablet. now my T and F CHLORINE is 3..... PH is 7.2.... ALK 120 but CYA is still low.

Emeil Nasralla The Pentair VSP is a good pump/motor. Usually it has a default setting that I recommend. But I did a video on filter run times and I discuss the run times for swim season and off-season whether you have a single speed pump or variable speed pump I would highly recommend watching it. Just do a KZbin search puncheon “filter run times“ and then punch in pool school and it should show up.

What if I have a small pool 14' x 42" and I have the Taylor test kit and it's a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what tune to fill and what my #s are 😕

@@WendyMaclaughlin a lot of fan of the Taylor test kits I like the test strips better. You’re gonna need some CYA in your pool. The level should be between 30 and 50 ppm. You want to have chlorine levels in your pool between three and 5 ppm do you want around 7.6 and your alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm.

For instance, if you’re adding liquid muriatic acid to lower the pH, I would probably use half a quart instead of a full court when it comes to soda as if you need to raise the pH add half a pound. So I would typically recommend for a pull your size cut the amounts in half of whatever I recommended.

Also.. using those text strips you have to have PH in range, other wise the strips won’t give you proper reading on CYA, right under directions in the note section on the strips container it’s there written and I have experienced that manny times where CYA wasn’t reading because PH was too low. You can but it isn’t recommended because the chlorine over time could possibly corrode your lines. You want to get a floater or a chlorinator.

You always add with the pool running and the only 2 chemicals you don't want to add on top of each other is acid and liquid chlorine(very bad). Add one wait an hour and add the other. Or when I was in the industry we couldn't stand there and wait an hour, so we would add one at one end of the pool and the other at the other end.

It does, only be careful with any solid chemical like the cyanuric acid you don’t want that to settle on the vinyl liner in the bottom of the pool.

I would say yes, except when it comes to the cyanuric acid you want to probably dilute that in a big bucket of water first, then distribute it in your Above Ground Pool. Because if any of those granules settle on the bottom, it could damage the vinyl liner.

If you have have high CYA leading to Chlorine lock, what does adjusting TA or pH matter? You'll end up dumping a ton of well-balanced water to lower the CYA, and have to start all over again. I'd argue high CYA should be addressed first.

I agree. If the CYA is high the only way to lower it is through dilution and in Arizona we typically will drain the pool and refill.

Quick question for you -- I put 4 lbs of cya acid granules in the skimmer as you show in your other videos...into my pool which was just emptied and refilled. Typically only an hour or two as long as the pump was running to erode the CYA in the skimmer basket. At that point ad one pound of CYA in the same way, wait a couple of hours and test, repeat until your CYA reaches 30 ppm.

We used to tell all our customers when they were new pool owners, you can always add more, but you can't take it out. Until you get good at understanding your pool chemistry, add a little with the pool running, wait about an hour and test and see where your at.

150-300 is a pretty large range. Typically you could narrow it down to closer to the 150 or 300 side. If it's closer to the 150 you should be fine until the summer's over then in the fall you can drain and refill the pool with less risk of harming your surface. JUST make sure you don't over dose your pool with CYA

Hello, both our T & F chlorine levels are high. Is the only fix for this to remove some of the pool water and add more fresh water?

Yes sort of. Evaporation will occur and if you have an auto filler it’s will automatically add water and the mix will dilute in time. But if you want it done quicker yes you’d have to train a little bit of your pool and refill it. If you have a filter they can be back washed you can backwash it a bit and then refill it just make sure the level doesn’t drop below your skimmer.

Doing a drain and refill of a 30ft round pool. Watched video and took notes in preparation to balance chemicals correctly but I do have two questions please. First, we have well water, so obviously orange/brown with metals. We have always used a bottle of metal out. Do you recommend and do I do that first? Let pump circulate so long before proceeding with next steps? Next, I did note you said you do things differently than others. Everyone else 100% swears by balancing alkalinity first, but you say ph? And, differently do cya as first step prior to ph, alkalinity? I really want to use your method just have those questions. Thank you so much, your videos are clear and precise.

Hi Jennifer. With regards to the Metal Out I'd suggest following the label directions. And yes, I typically add the CYA first but most of the time when I do a start up, (since I"m only there once for the process. I typically add all the chemicals at once (or within a 1/2 hour time span) with the equipment running. I do it in the order I show in the NEWER video I did. Great video. I've just replastered and refilled with water. In your list of chemicals, you end with needing Dry Pool Acid. Why buy this when we are already using Muriatic Acid and Cyanuric Acid. Can't we just add those to lower Alkalinity? Thanks.

For some reason (which I can't explain because I'm not. a chemist, the dry acid lowers the alkalinity without affecting the pH. And Muriatic acid lowers the pH without affecting the alkalinity.

You may want to adjust the amounts down a bit so as to not risk over dosing the pool. Maybe reduce the amount by 1/3

It does, just take note most above ground pools are smaller so don’t add really quite as much as you would a typical pool

It is except you should check with whoever put in the pebble tech, i.e. the pool builder and find out if there is a “curing“ time needed for the pebble Tec once the water is in the pool. Sometimes they recommend that once you have the water in but before you add chemicals to allow the pebble tech to cure properly, so check with the manufacturer or builder first and follow their recommendations as to when you can add the start up chemicals after the pool is filled

Would you use these same guidelines for starting up a new, in-ground plastered pool? Adding of course brushing it multiple times per day and cleaning the filter after a few days? I've read it is also best to wait a week or so to add chlorine? We did an owner build and can't seem to find a reputable local company to do a pool start up.

I would follow the Plaster manufacturers guidelines on how long to wait after filling the pool before adding chlorine or any chemicals for that matter. Sometimes the plaster needs a certain out of time to cure the water. So check the manufacturer is labeling on that. As far as the chemicals go yes the same chemicals would be use for the start up of a brand new pool. And you already have a handle on making sure that you clean the filter to get out all the residual plaster powder.

It does but keep in mind the gallonage of the pool. When I did this video I was basing it on a typical play pool of between 10,000 and 12,000 gallons. So if your AGP is less than that make sure you reduce the amounts accordingly.

Hello, we tried your method as we are new to having a pool and the chlorine levels are good but the pH won't come up not the cyanuric acid or alkalinity after using the soda ash. What should we do please!?

The process for increasing, the pH can be repeated every couple hours with testing. So keep adding a pound of soda ash until your pH gets to where it needs to be testing every hour between so you don’t overdose. Same thing with the cyanuric acid add 1 pound at a time let the pump run for a couple hours and then test again and add or repeat as needed. Typically it’s not just a 1 pound does the trick.

You would want to make sure someone doesn't. Just like you would have make sure someone wouldn't open a chlorine tablet floater and mess with the tablets inside.

Kenny, I’m days away from a drain & refill on my 10k gallon pool due to high CYA of 400ppm. Then I’ll do a chlorine rinse to kill off algae. I’ll wet the walls and apply chlorine using a pump sprayer. Should I dilute the chlorine or can you recommend a ratio to use. It’s a 40yro plaster pool. Also, everyone’s favorite pool store, “L”, wants to sell me an $80 gallon of “Conditioner” and 10 bags of expensive shock “and you’re to go”. No dry acid, soda ash or bicarbonate of soda. But I see you don’t mention the use Shock at all when refilling. Do you advise against their method and why? Thanks.

It’s really hard for me to advise on using a chlorine rinse or an acid wash on plaster that old. So I’m going to refrain from making any recommendations on that. When plaster is that old it’s very possible to do serious damage to it. As far as dealing with algae, the number one reason for algae providing you have proper pool chemistry chlorine levels where they need to be an adequate and clean filtration is phosphates. Check out my video on algae and algicide and why you don’t need them.

Hello sir thank you for this video. I have a saltwater pool that has a grey gunite finish which I just drained due to me not keeping up with maintenance which caused staining of the surface. I completely drained, acid cleaned everything with muriatic acid pressure washed. Looks brand new again and all of the stains are gone and now am refilling the pool does this apply to saltwater pools? Thank you very much.

It does but you'll want to add salt to raise the salinity to the recommended levels for your salt system. I usually use liquid chlorine so the pool doesn't struggle while the salt cell is getting going and the salt dissolving. Once your cell is doing well and the level of salinity is good you won't need to use chlorine except for supplemental help if your salt system can't keep up in the heat of summer.

Congratulations on your above ground pool. I’m pretty sure I know the type it’s probably similar to the one that we used to have which is actually in one of the first videos I did called “getting to know your pool“ or understanding your pool. With regards to amounts. Because I stayed in the video that you should add them in small amounts I.e.: 1 quart of acid at a time or 1 pound of CYA at a time, you should be fine. Just remember to test every couple hours after adding chemicals so you don’t overdo any other chemicals. Especially the cyanuric acid

CYA helps the pool hold chlorine. Without it you'll burn through a lot more chlorine. It is possible to start up a pool without it, just know that you'll burn through a lot more chlorine and should get some ASAP.

great info ! **however, it seems to me that one of the constant struggles of pool water is "high CYA" . A local pool professional here in Tucson AZ told me once that he doesn't add any CYA when he starts up a pool that has just been refilled. Reason being : the water here holds CYA and climbs fast (if you use tablets - stabilizer) . I imagine that you would need to add some if you are using liquid chlorine to start up, otherwise there is nothing to "stabilize" the sanitizer, correct? in your video, you recommend bringing it up to the parameter for balanced water. Is this start up CYA necessary ? Opinion from a fellow Arizonan , thanks !

Thanks for commenting. In my experience I've found that on a fresh water start up you do need to add some CYA to get things going. Remember, not enough CYA also causes the pool to not hold chlorine. BUT far too many people (sadly often at the recommendation of some - NOT ALL- pool supply companies add way too much and then when they do use the tablets the CYA has no "wiggle room" within the range. I try to get the CYA to the lowest end of the ideal range which is 30ppm. And then even with using as much tablets as some do in our hot AZ summers the CYA usually takes around 5 years to get to a place where you need to change the water.

Typically it's the same things. Florida may have an abundance of phosphates due to the vegetation there. High chlorine is NO REASON to drain a pool. Only High CYA. Test the chlorine yourself and see if they're correct first then if it it REALLY high just stop adding chlorine to the pool. As your water evaporates and you add fresh water, and use the pool, the chlorine level will drop gradually. Once you get it back down then maintain it.

Our pool is 38,000 gallons and was just refilled. The guy we hired to do it stated we had to let our pads soak with bleach and water for about a week. He hasn’t added anything to the pool since it’s been filled (2 days so far) and I’m concerned about the water sitting without anything being added? He stated all we need to add is stabilizer at first. It’s a very large pool and I’m not sure when to add chemicals or if he’s correct. We’re in Tucson BTW

I have really enjoyed and learned from your videos. I find your instructions clear, the videos seem to flow well, and you are easy to listen to. I just opened my brand new pool (Thursday Pools Sandal Beach Entry 12,000 gal). I went from green to clear in just over 36 hrs following your instructions. Pump ran the whole time on high, cleared the skimmer and strainer 3 times and just backwashed once at the end of the 36 hrs.CYA is still just a little low, but I am sneaking up to barely be in the 30-50 range. I have an automatic chlorinator but will be changing to salt (IC40) with an Easytouch 8 automation system (Doing it myself when they are finished as they wanted over $6K for an IC20 and easytouch 4 and I paid $2500). Any suggestions on how to clean the Beach Entry part? I figure I can vacuum about half way up before the vacuum starts sucking air. I was thinking just take the brush and sweep the rest to the deeper part.

Beach entry's are tricky to clean. It's hard to keep the sand out of the main pool and out of the filter. Best thing to do to keep the sand out is to brush towards the sand. Then vacuum what you can below it. Check out poolschooler.com for more helpful tools and checklists.

@@PoolSchooler The Pool Guy that does my neighbor's Pool told me to brush the Pool after adding Muriatic Acid. He stated that the acid is much heavier than water and will sink like a rock to the bottom and will etch the plaster or possibly pit. Also diluting the MA helps with spreading it out and not pooling in the bottom. Seems legit to me. I did read it is best practice to put water in a bucket and add 1/2 Gallon of MA on top....then pour in pool to help with all of the above. Just a fyi. Coming from Arizona The Mecca of Pools.

If the liquid M/A is poured into the water and the pump running the circulation would distribute it around the pool so I don't think one would need to brush it to "stir" it up.

Hardness typically is a combination of minerals in the pool (usually the majority of it is calcium and magnesium). So if you have hard water it's mainly calcium causing it.

New Pebble Tec pool, I was told not to Put Chlorine in, Nor shock the Pool. I have put in Muratic Acid and Conditiiner. The pool is cloudy now, I got the pool at 100%. But its about to Rain Again. Do i need to Re-Apply the Muratic acid/Conditioner?

Whoever told you that is absolutely ridiculous. I have never heard of someone not using chlorine in a cool just because it’s pebble Tec. Unless you have a salt system in which case you don’t need to add chlorine typically. But absolutely your pool Hass to have some kind of sanitizer and chlorine is that sanitizer. So fire the person who told you that and get some chlorine in the pool ASAP. I would suggest putting a couple gallons at least of liquid chlorine in the pool run the equipment don’t swim in it until you test the water and if your chlorine level is up at that point you’re good. If not repeat the process.

Great video, one concern I have is that I’m not sure if my water source is suitable for re filling the swimming pool. It’s a well and not a super deep one so a lot of rust like minerals. Is it possible I need to have water delivered or can the chemistry be properly balanced despite the water not being the greatest. What do you suggest?

Hi, I service pools in Vegas and Im starting to notice purple staining on some of my pools. Yes a few are fiberglass with high cyanuric acid levels but Im noticing purple staining on tiles and plaster. I know of high copper levels. How or what do you suggest in removing the purple staining and what is causing it to happen? Thank you for your videos

The staining is caused when the water has formed something called copper cyanurate. Copper cyanurate occurs when excessive levels of cyanuric acid combine with non-chelated copper that is present in the water. This problem is most common in that have cyanuric acid levels measuring above 100ppm
